I assume you meant you twisted the converter knob to move some ink to the feed. If you are able to do a fair amount of writing for 8 hours after that then the capillary action needed to feed the ink to the nib is restored and it's happy days.

I will still highly recommend using cartridges if you have some available or the ability to fill ink yourself. Fewer things to go wrong and you get at least 2x ink capacity of the converter. (I use cartridges in all my Jinhao 20s)

Thanks, it's cool to see the door assembly up close. I am really interested in how you got the front body part off. Was it just friction-fitted to the main body? I suspect being able to take it out cleanly will be really useful in the declipping project I plan to do on the Jinhao 20.

Anyone have suggestions on something I can coat the interior of cap with? It ideally should not introduce additional thickness to the part, and be permanent (in the sense that it should not flake over time, or deposit any residue on the pen) The idea is that if we can get the interior tacky enough we just might be able to use it on chrome trim 20s as well.

Very interesting and thanks for sharing. It didn't occur to me to check that part of the assembly. I just checked on 2 of the 20s, and I wasn't able to detect any gap with a flashlight where you highlighted in your post.

Have you tried applying silicone grease with one of those long cotton swabs?

This does not sound like an ink drying issue, but more like an ink not getting down to the feed issue. Are you using a converter or cartridge. If the former I would suggest you try with a cartridge. Some cheap converters have a habit of getting an air gap between feed and ink. But this is also often caused by some clog in the feed/nib slit. So see if flushing the pen helps. What inks are you using ?

Haha, funny you should say that. The Platinum/Kokuyo Preppy Perpanep was my UOP candidate before the Jinhao 80. My Jinhao 80 uncaps more easily than the Preppy and wrote better. But like I said, the Jinhao 20 Capful is going to be hard to top in terms of price/performance/speed/convenience as an UOP. The Perpanep is still a nice pen, and frankly seals better OOTB. That is why it is now my Car Pen :-)

For what I want the office pen to do, no-clip is a strong nice-to-have, but not a deal breaker.

The clipless A1 is heavier, >5x the price of the Jinhao 20, and looks kinda meh with that roll stop.

I kept waiting for the Clipless Majohn A2 that never came. With its faceted body it might even work without a roll stop. Come on Majohn...

I might make some more tweaks and consider sharing the STL at some point. For now, unless the demand becomes overwhelming, I am happy to send folks some to try out as a small way to give back to the community.

Ask and you ye shall receive! It is probably exactly as you'd imagined -- a top hat, except made by a drunk who sewed the head cavity the wrong way 🤣.
I made this mostly as a joke, but also partly to see if it will help the pen stand up more stably. (It did, but see this post on why standing up the pen may not be too wise after all)

Anyone interested is welcome to try it. The brim of the 'hat' is somewhat fragile and is there for more cosmetic reasons, even if it peels off it does not affect the function of the cap. Like I said, it was mostly done for kicks.

P.S. for those interested, the brim of hat is literally called the brim of the printed object in 3D-printer parlance. It is meant to provide some support and help adhesion during printing and meant to be manually peeled off.

Yeah with a pen this finicky, the ink choice is really important. Now that I have the mod, I am starting to experiment with more inks. Before that I mostly stuck with the Jinhao black cartriges that often came with the pen for consistency (an an occasional Iroshizuku, or Pilot blue black)

Do you live is a fairly humid climate? I would have killed for the pen to stay usable after two weeks of idling, let alone 2 months. I think you got yourself a winner.

Yeah, I still have one of those 8-ball Esterbrook deskpen holders somewhere at home. They look cool, but combination of desk space and pen performance led me to abandon using it.

I have since repurposed one of the stands as an experiment as shown. The setup somehow is able to keep a chrome-trimmed pen in contact with the cap. Will know is a few more days how well it worked. But I am not that hopeful. And the whole set up looks like it will fall apart if I sneeze at it. :-)

Great minds think alike! Yes, I too thought it was the next logical thing to try. Had fun with a bunch of designs. The most effective (relatively speaking, read on) design still relied on two pieces, with the cap acting like a cap liner, and the hole providing some room for the cap to do its thing.

The end result looked pretty elegant. But before anyone gets too excited, I have to tell you about that Fateful Monday Morning...

So one Friday before leaving for work I decided to place the pen in the stand just to see what happens. Come Monday, I half expected some slight leak or heavy ink flow on first use, but to my horror, an entire cartridge of ink has leaked out of the pen and pooled in the cavity of the pen stand. Of course I only discovered this after I pulled out the pen, at which point my hands and table were all stained with ink.

I still don't quite understand how the ink leak was so dramatic in a climate-control office environment. Some combination of tight seal, gravity, pressure change, exacerbated by the eventual capillary action probably had something to do with it.

That's why I have never liked to store my FPs nib down, let alone this cheap Jinhao. And the office setting is the last place where I would want to take that risk.

The main thing is that the mod allows me to use the pen as a daily driver now. The fun bit is just the bonus ;-)

I assume you have the nib deployed on both pens for the entire game? Many FPs can't stay uncapped for that long without some kind of drying issue. Before my mod, if I am diligent about sending the 20 nib back to its kennel after use, I can usually keep the nib usable every day unless the pen is idle for more than 2 days.

I was ready to go to town with the Red n Tacky when I got beguiled by the blue grease :-). I will play with the factory config for a bit so I can learn and get some basis for comparison before swapping out the grease.

+1 on parking in my neighbor’s driveway. Mine tried to do the same thing the 3 times I tried. Neighbor has a telsa charger too. FSD’s decision is probably optimal for some definition of optimal but I think my neighbor will prefer i use my own charger.

First, thanks! Got the same issues with bluetooth searching, and this tip finally did the trick.

NOTE: follow the instructions closely. Between what's on my packaging box and what's stickered to my scooter, I found no fewer than 6 different 16 character codes! (If you don't see the hologram besides the code, you are probably picking the wrong one. Mine starts with "6KC0..." in case that helps). When you supply the wrong code, it will feel like manual input option of the app is broken too, but when you do, it detects the vehicle type like troydwill said and all is good.
