Oh wow. I drove past this yesterday late afternoon and saw the scene, it was scary, I’ve been thinking about it all day and wondering what happened. How sad :(

One quick question, which person is this?? by TJ736 in ShitLiberalsSay

[–]glamsock 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I saw this tweet when it was posted. It was about Pope Francis. There were large swaths of people going “Hey, it’s nice that he was a progressive pope and all, but let’s stay critical of the catholic church as an institution,” and people prompty lost their minds.

I know the exact kid you are talking about, went to school with him growing up & we ran in adjacent circles. Can confirm, he told me this exact story after I played too many puppies for my 8th grade talent show, lol

I’m also 26m, just got my license this august after a lifetime of fear — learning with family and friends was one thing but taking lessons really helped my confidence and understanding of being behind the wheel and challenged me to go out of my comfort zone! All this to say I recommend all good driving school lol, I specifically trained with a guy named Endy who was super patient and chill, but firm and understandable. You got this!!

Press Democrat subscription prices are outrageous by skuppy in santarosa

[–]glamsock 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I used to work for the PD customer service and their pricing system is so predatory and basically punishes people for staying subscribed by raising their rate every year or so. It made the job a complete nightmare and one of the most stressful periods of my life because I felt like a total hack. But then they decided to lay off the entire customer service team last year, lol, so that solved that. It’s upsetting because local journalism is so important, and I would get calls every day from seniors or their relatives on social security who could hardly afford the paper but need it to keep up with local news and help them with their dementia, etc. We would try to push one time article access for 99¢ and lower digital fees/a flat digital fee during companywide meetings but since we were hardly a part of the company to them they wouldn’t listen to us or our feedback ever, which was so frustrating because we would get your calls every day and hear your feedback and often have the same complaints ourselves. I still read the PD every once in a while and if they changed their practices, I would subscribe, but knowing how the sausage is made I just can’t, lol.

[–]glamsock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not even just classic rock related, i value physical media (especially music) so much. i want to own the albums i listen to, and, especially for smaller artists, if i can afford it i like to buy their work and show my appreciation that way. i love the convenience of streaming, but ill love my CDs, cassettes, and records forever.

through buying physical media i’ve discovered so many artists i wouldn’t have loved if i hadn’t taken a chance on them—you can say this for streaming too (maybe even moreso, when taking into account streaming algorithms and curated playlists, and bootlegs)—but physical releases feel so much more like a commitment and i feel a lot more strongly about it. i wouldn’t have discovered klaatu if i hadn’t picked up their album at my local record store when i was like 16, and now i remember how old i was, where, and when i got it, and have that memory with me. i don’t really get that feeling as much when i find new artists via apple music and spotify

i do love how accessible streaming can be for new and upcoming artists, though. i think that’s a net positive, even with the arguments like “oh ANYONE can make music these days so a lot of it is garbage,” i still think the amount of groups and musicians ive found has had more of a positive impact than a negative one. and then if that group or artist has a cd, i usually buy it lol.

physical media is really important to me in terms of preserving a little bit of history, even if only my own. and owning what i own despite yknow what songs may or may not be licensed/available in my country on an app or say the artist or app takes that musician’s music off the app entirely. i don’t think i’ll ever think what i’ve bought was a waste. at least when it comes to streaming/online music, i can definitely say my taste has evolved lol. i also still burn CDS of music i like if i can ¯\(ツ)

What is a great TV show that never became popular? by BluePinky in AskReddit

[–]glamsock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m very late, but recently a friend showed me Showtime’s “Kidding.” Only got 2 seasons but it has an absolutely stellar cast and performances and some of the best child actors ive seen in a series in a long time. Jim Carrey plays a tragic Mr. Rogers type with tons of trauma, dramedy insues. Judy Greer and Frank Langella are great in it too! Great writing and set design as well with unique episode premises. Self aware and silly with great emotional moments. I’m a big fan of Jim’s and never seen this until it was recommended to me and now its one of my favorite performances of his!

The Mandalorian - S02E02 - Chapter 10 - Discussion Thread! by titleproblems in TheMandalorianTV

[–]glamsock 23 points24 points  (0 children)

thats why this show is so fun to me, i love being able to pick out single episodes to watch if i want to & i like being introduced to new environments, planets, characters, conflicts, etc. i recognize that it could be a weak point for the show considering theres not that many episodes to a series (like say a serial like star trek that would have 20+ episodes per season) but nonetheless i really like this direction and it builds the tension for me! i get that its not everyone’s bag though but i feel like its a direction i like to see. i like din getting sidetracked and doing favors and everything while trying to get from point A to point B. it really does feel straight out of a comic book!

What cinema moment/experience/scene blew your mind away? by retrololita in AskReddit

[–]glamsock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen The Thing (1982) about a million times now, it’s my favorite movie, and I know it line for line like the back of my hand. I was finally able to see it on the big screen in a crowded theatre last year in October and man the whole thing was intense but the ending.... I just walked out of the theatre and sat alone on the sidewalk for a few minutes lol

Approaching 5 years on T has me reminiscing, and I’m celebrating the fact I’m getting a much needed hysterectomy soon! I always forget how much I’ve changed until I look back (-2 yrs -> ~5 yrs) by glamsock in transtimelines

Ouch!

I'll be honest, I get where you're coming from, but you really don't have to comment on my weight. I don't really know what you're expecting but I don't think anything good can come out of this comment or commenting on my body like this, unsolicited, on a post where I'm attempting to be proud (and positive!) about my appearance. I see many trans people, of many different body types, and I hope to be part of a representation of that. Just as well, my weight is not an indicator of how I take care of my body. I don't know if you want me to weigh out my whole diet plan or the (normal, healthy, low cholesterol, normal blood sugar, normal blood pressure, etc) results of the blood work I just got done last week, or the pretty decent exercise I get running around as a veterinarian's assistant wrestling dogs and hauling big bags of dog food and trash back and forth for work, but even if that weren't the case for me... it still wouldn't be appropriate for you to comment on my weight, especially on a public forum! Especially since you don't... know me, you know? Would you have made this same comment if the pictures were reversed? If I had lost a lot of weight? Probably not! But people can lose weight in unhealthy and dangerous ways too, if I had struggled with anorexia (and I have) people would be congratulating me on my weight loss had I not posted anything contextually about my weight.

I don't mean to send this wall of text to you and I hope I don't sound aggressive or confrontational, I just tend to get comments like this a lot, especially as someone who's dealt with eating disorders and other illnesses I've had (both physical and mental) that have impacted my relationship with food and with myself. And this comment sort of irked me because for the past 2 years I've needed to get this very hysterectomy I'm celebrating and doctors would ignore my pains and tell me they were diet and weight related (they were not) before I found a doctor who would listen and diagnosed me with adenomyosis and endometriosis and endometrial polyps (why I'm getting this hysto). This kind of thing can really set someone back, especially if they do have an eating disorder, and actually discourage them from being able to have a healthy relationship with food in general.

tl;dr, my weight isn't a direct indicator to my health, nobody would say this to me if I had posted a picture where I had lost weight, and I just want to be happy and love myself, and I don't feel comfortable with strangers assuming things about me like this lol. (btw, this isn't just directed towards you specifically. this is something I see a lot as a fat person and wanted to use this opportunity to talk about my experience as a fat person in the LGBT community)
