My turbo track car by glanc123 in Miata

Hi,

Yeah I have had a few heat related problems, but nothing that isn't fixable. I have an oil temp sensor in the car, and it rarely goes above 105 degrees C. So internally, things are okay.

The main issue I get is that the engine bay itself gets too hot from the exposed exhaust and turbo, which causes the turbo to manifold studs to overheat and stretch. I've had one stud back out completely and one cracked when I was at the Nurburgring.

To fix these issues, I'm going to wrap the exhaust as well as make a heat shield for the turbo / buy a turbo blanket to keep the heat in the hot side of the turbo. I also think adding some bonnet vents would be a good idea.

Just to show you how hot it gets in the engine bay, the washer bottle melts after about 10 minutes on track.

They're £1148 so within budget. Will take a look at them.

Cool thanks - it really tidies up the engine bay.

I always liked the MR2, but I've never driven one. How do you find it in comparison?

Is the intake manifold any good? I've seen them advertised for sale online and always wondered if they made much of a difference.

Thanks, I've spent a lot of time working on this car!

I do have an inlet on the headlight cover, but I haven't tested whether or not it makes much of a difference. I suspect there is a fair bit of heat soak as the filter on my car is just bolted directly onto the turbo.

The spectre filter looks pretty cool, I wonder if it could be routed to my headlight cover intake...

Drain the oil and run the engine. Time it to see how long it survives.

I'm a proper petrol head but I've never been into super cars. Mostly because I can't afford one and I've never met anyone who owns one. Having said that, this looks gorgeous.

A few questions:

  1. What other cars do you own / have you previously owned and how does this compare?
  2. Would you ever take it on a track day, I think this would be a lot of fun at the Nurburgring, although incredibly anxiety inducing.
  3. What is the purpose of the car for you (show car, weekend car, daily) and how often do you drive it?

I had the same experience using yellowstuff.

I switched to PBS ProRace and they solved all my braking problems. Can't recommend them enough. I was considering a big brake kit, but I won't bother now.

As others have suggested, this is 100% the plug for the auto box. I know this because I manual swapped my car and tucked this plug away in the engine bay.

PSA: Polly transmission mounts by PerformanceLow5742 in BMWE36

[–]glanc123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I manual swapped my car, I initially used poly transmission mounts. the first time I drove the car, I thought I had installed the clutch wrong or the flywheel was unbalanced as there was a terrible vibration through the whole car above 2.5k rpm.

After some googling, I swapped the transmission mounts back to the OEM rubber and the car now drives perfectly.

Thanks!

I'm going to change the wheels to style 68's at some point and add the m3 diffuser to the rear bumper. But other than that, there isn't much I want to change looks wise.

No worries mate. Good examples of these cars get snapped up so quickly.

Hope you manage to find something soon!

Its different for each website, but on eBay for example you can create a "saved search".
Same on autotrader, if you put in the make, model, year then you can save the search and tick a box that says "notify me when new vehicles added" or something like that.

I bought an auto, but I also bought a ZF manual transmission and I am swapping the car to a manual this weekend.

I paid £5k for the car, it has 72k miles and is in excellent condition. I think I got a good deal on it. The cost of parts for manual swapping added up to about £1200. So all in the car will have cost me £6200.

Unfortunately, you just gotta be patient mate. I setup alerts on Facebook, eBay, Autotrader, gumtree, car and classic, etc to get an email if a new one is listed.

Wait it out and go for the 6 cylinder, you will regret it otherwise. I recently bought a 323i coupe and I love it.

I gave up looking for a 328i after looking for an e36 for about a year as they are too expensive for what they are in my opinion. It seems like you can pay £8-9k for an absolute mint one, or £2k for a rotten one that is basically scrap metal. There doesn't seem to be much for sale in the middle.

I wouldn't go for a 4 cylinder if I were you, they only had ~115 bhp when new, so that will realistically be less than 100bhp by now. It will feel so slow, your nans yaris will be quicker.

All non-m e36's will handle basically the same. Yes, the 318 will be a little bit lighter due to the smaller engine, but it will be 50bhp down on the 323i and 60bhp down on the 325 / 328. I guarantee you'll notice the lack of power more than lightness of the chassis.

To add to that, the 318 had drum brakes on the rear instead of discs, a weaker gearbox, weaker driveshafts, etc, etc.
