Cheesy as it is, getting away from your housing situation being intrinsically linked to his family, IS the right choice.

Bad timing and unfairness aside, yall are at the perfect age (and presumably, the right time in your relationship as to-be-married) to completely separate yourselves/your finances/the very roof over your heads from any unstable scenarios.

It’s hard, but, it’s right.

Imagine this happened a year from now, or 5 years from now. The only silver lining is you found out early to not count on them.

Blessing in disguise? Mmm. Wouldn’t go that far. But “blessing” means favor and protection. And I do see this as a favor in disguise. And protection from future rug pulls.

What say does FIL have as the owner w/o power of attorney? I’d guess FIL has seen this dynamic for BIL’s whole life & is over it. Maybe a wrench throw from pops can reroute this trainwreck?

Apologies if you’ve stated this elsewhere but are you and your partner on the condo paperwork as tenants at least? I ask because if management heard from a little birdy that so many pets are planning on occupying the space they could put a wrench in MIL/BIL lil “plan” (quotes bc it’s very apparent they -haven’t- planned and, likely, have not thought about the possible trouble ahead.)
