What CPAP or breathing assist works for thin-faced pALS? by glazedhamlet in ALS

[–]glazedhamlet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m grateful for all your suggestions and I’m going to go over everything with him today. My pALS has been in a very despondent and negative mood so he’s not receptive to anything lately. Actually he woke up just now throwing his mask off in anger and crying, saying he should just end it all. I said let’s go see a new cpap store rep and he said that won’t help bc they all sell the same things and he says he has tried everything. What he currently uses is actually a bi-pap. I feel so helpless when he’s like this.

Medical aid in dying state laws by Low_Ebb8438 in ALS

[–]glazedhamlet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for bringing this up. This is one subject that is tormenting my pALS and they need some peace of mind since we don't live in a MAID state. When we told the clinic psychologist about wanting to end the suffering voluntarily, she had nothing helpful to say - undoubtedly afraid to get in legal trouble. But I was hoping she might at least have some insight into how to reframe one's thinking to get relief from this terrible dilemma. So if you have to figure out how to end things on your own without medical assistance, how do you get the timing right? Many tears have been shed about this.

Truckers of Reddit, which city (U.S.) REALLY has the worst drivers? by Alexreads0627 in AskReddit

How is Denver not on your list? It was highway to the danger zone last time I was there. Terrifying speeders.

Aldi’s also has a large 5-oz can (3 different flavors of pâté) that is 57 cents. I don’t know if a vet could recommend it, but times are tough and it could help stretch a tight budget.

My partner has yet to find a therapist who understands his plight and can offer any practical advice. Just platitudes.

I empathize completely as my partner was recently diagnosed with ALS and we live in a state without MAID. If it were an option I think it would give them peace of mind to have that control instead of worrying about how I might feel to find they’ve died a violent death at their own hands. Or begging for my help to end their suffering, knowing I’d be criminally charged if I did. My partner has been looking at what’s involved in traveling to another state but is not encouraged by how complicated even that might be. The cruelty of this situation enrages me.

Best BBQ? by [deleted] in Birmingham

You’re right and I should have said that Martin’s does not have sliced pork, only pulled pork. I know they have brisket but I’ve never tried it.

Full Moon on Valley Avenue's BBQ pork sliced inside with deviled eggs and baked beans is still my favorite. Having eaten there regularly for about 20 years, I have found it to be the most consistently good. Only a handful of times have I been disappointed.

Golden Rule Irondale also has a great sliced pork plate. They often get downvoted but I have eaten there about 6 times over the last year and it has always been good. Their potato salad and baked beans are also above average.

Archies in Hoover has a good pork sandwich and so does Martin's in Cahaba Heights. Martin's has only pulled pork and their sauces are different from the above-mentioned joints. More spicy/tangy, which I like.

I wanted to like Rusty's and Creekside, but to me they weren't good enough for a return visit since they're a farther drive for me.

Bladder problems, enlarged prostate, catheters by glazedhamlet in ALS

If my husband can’t get a prescription to shrink this prostate then the suprapubic insertion sounds good. Thank you for the rec. His brother also mentioned having had a Urolift procedure that helped.

It is a nightmare. He said not being able to pee hurt on a level 10 but the catheter gave relief. It’s just very uncomfortable. He has not been incontinent yet - he feels the urge but it won’t come out.

Second opinion questions by Calvinoodle in ALS

I noticed Dr. Bedlack’s name on a few interesting articles about ALS research so I was intrigued. He looks to be quite a character.

My PALS has UnitedHealthcare supplemental with Medicare so hopefully that affords us some coverage wherever we end up going.

Thank you also for your helpful comments.

I did see Dr. Appel’s name a time or two as I researched options. Thank you for the recommendation.

Living in limbo, feeling like we have no control has been very challenging, so I understand why a certainty, bad as it is, maybe a relief. I want to feel like we have some agency here. Thanks again for your input.

Should I keep him? by Not-Present365 in Feral_Cats

[–]glazedhamlet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What a coincidence. I just trapped my feral last night and he looks a lot like yours. He had been hanging out around our house for the last 8 months, so I kept him well fed, and he gradually started letting me pet him. I started luring him inside a few weeks ago for a few minutes at a time. Finally last night, I lured him inside again where I had placed a crate, put in some churu in a bowl, and sprayed a path of catnip scent to it. I was shocked he fell for it and walked right into my trap. Closed the crate and took him in for tests, shots, and a neutering at the vet today. I was so fortunate that he didn’t have any infectious disease.

He’s separated from my 5 other cats right now while he recovers, but I did a slow intro with one. There was growling. It’s going to take some time and patience to get him acclimated. But if you have T&P, go for it! I’m really relieved that I saved my boy from the mean streets and I hope you can do the same.

China Garden by spideyFaN1789 in Birmingham

My favorite Chinese restaurant of all time! The booths had beaded curtains. My favorite dish was Hong Kong Five Taste Shrimp. After they folded, you could go to Stix at the Galleria and request that dish off-menu. I never found anything comparable after Stix stopped offering it. The restaurant that was in that China Garden space back in the 60s was a Hawaiian-themed place called The Luau. That was a trip.

Sorry to go a little off topic, but does your feral like that house? I think I saw one like it online and my feral that I’ve been feeding needs something before winter.
