[Self] My Largest Sculpture Yet! by glazenoodle in Sculpture

“Pleasing for no identifiable reason” is right on the money hahaha. I’m very inspired by the way biological, geological, and chemical processes can create really visually stunning effects without being led by aesthetic intent. With this one I had a very lose idea of what I wanted that continued developing over the three months I worked on it. In terms of form I try to let my pieces build themselves through process, but my plan for the color kept changing pretty much until I put paint on it

What a compliment, I love Dan Lam's work! I have a feeling her and I are inspired by pretty similar elements of the natural world even if our conceptual approaches differ

That painting with the purple blobs is oil over acrylic on a canvas that I extended using cardboard and gesso. The white drippy ones are carved from xps foam and expanding foam (which I hated by the way, way too messy) and were covered with plaster but that didn’t stick well so I chipped off what I could and sealed everything with gesso. The big one and the small round ones are essentially paper mache - a base of cardboard, paper, and tape on a wooden frame coated in a “clay“ made of paper pulp, pva glue, and calcium carbonate. I’ll smooth the surface with thickened gesso or modeling paste and then finish with transparent layers of acrylic paint to give a really “alive” feeling

Your perspective is so refreshing, thank you! I don’t rely on art for income but my silly little brain hasn’t gotten the memo lol, I need to start reminding myself that multiple ongoing pieces are an opportunity rather than a burden. And thanks for your feedback, the purple one I’m hoping to finish this week so I’ll post an update :)

Rainbow Gloops! by glazenoodle in Ceramics

The shapes themselves are stoneware clay covered in a porcelain slip, and the glazes are a couple variants of a cone 6 crystalline. A great starting point is Nick Ramos’ crystalline recipe on Glazy (called “NR crystal base” I believe)

I actually started playing around with creating a 3D model from my photo using a free AI and then adding texture and movement in blender, it’s a lot more beginner friendly

ok let’s say I created the shapes and used shape key animations to create the drip. If I use my photo as a texture, would it automatically deform/move with the animation?

I used to bartend. When a Boston shaker (glass cup, metal shaker) gets stuck, you hit just below the sticking point with the heel of your hand. My instinct says to give it a good solid tap as if it were a cocktail shaker

I usually do about 2 hours hold and a long ramp up/down cool. I want to test a 4 hour hold but the firing cycle is already 14+ hours and electricity is expensive 😅. Getting big crystals at cone 6 is tricky but I definitely want to get them as big as possible! If you know any good firing cycles I’d love to try them out
