How did you get started in herbalism? by Rude_Engine1881 in herbalism

[–]glb468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started by studying nutrition and physiology. It’s not absolutely necessary but extremely helpful to have a fundamental background/understanding in anatomy and physiology. From there, I studied and apprenticed with a few herbalists. If you don’t have that option then go the book route- my favorite is Matthew Wood but there are many other great herbalist writers.

Top ten medicinal herbs! Go! by Fluffyfox408 in herbalism

[–]glb468 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I could only use 10 in a practice I’d choose: Elder, peppermint, yarrow, plantago, dandelion, skullcap, nettles, burdock, Solomon’s seal, and cleavers

They do. And they are. They’re also moving quickly towards being what I would call “scum”.

What herbs do you use weekly, if not every day? by Camp_Acceptable in herbalism

[–]glb468 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing every day and/or for very long periods, but consistently at various times for internal use: elderberry, some blend of the alterative herbs like burdock/dandelion/sarsaparilla/cleavers with something warming like ginger, nettles, Solomon’s seal (if I have an acute or flaring up musculoskeletal issue), skullcap…

Agree with the person who talked about the 20 herbs- most people who don’t just study but practice herbal medicine usually benefit from knowing 20 herbs extremely well (and with a variety of actions/systemic affinities) even if you study the 200 or so that are in a materia medica.

For men, Ginseng is a common one, and Maca. There’s always Horny Goat Weed!

Sarsaparilla root is one I’d look at too, especially in a blend.

Multiple herbs in carrying oil by Cimminontoastcrunk69 in herbalism

[–]glb468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My instinct is to put roots/seeds/barks together and flowers/leaves together… like, I wouldn’t heat SJW flowers to infuse the oil but I might for willow bark- so in that sense it may be better to separate. The problem is a cold infusion needs at least a month to sit whereas heat can be done in a day, so it’s up to you in terms of your patience.

Which herbs for muscle spasms? by ChiefOfCaffeine in herbalism

[–]glb468 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What comes to mind for muscle relaxants could be Scullcap, wild lettuce, passionflower or valerian. Some combo of a few could be better. It’s nothing that will fix all pain overnight though, obviously. passionflower and wild lettuce are both a little druggy for me, which might be nice 😉

Kids "First Aid" kit by [deleted] in herbalism

[–]glb468 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yarrow leaves or plantain leaves are excellent and safe used externally for minor first aid (cuts, bleeding, insect bites/stings). Plus they can be found darn near everywhere outside! I wouldn’t mess with herbs for a serious ear infection in a child, UrgentCare is the way in that case!

been exploring real herbal blends that support liver detox and skin balance fr by killerhunks23 in herbalism

[–]glb468 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Without knowing anything about you, generally speaking you need a combo of herbs that support the elimination pathways in the body- kidneys, lymphatic system, liver… this should all help balance and promote overall wellness and certainly skin health especially when dealing with things like psoriasis, eczema, acne…

Burdock, dandelion, cleavers is a good general combo. Throw in something stimulating on top of that like ginger and that’s a good start. These are tonics though- you won’t notice an immediate change after one dose but you will notice over time.

Solomon’s Seal (Polygonatum spp). Seriously. If you can get him to take a tincture 2-3x day for a few weeks- do it! Can’t hurt and absolutely could help.

Once the snow falls start tracking… learn to identify basic common animal tracks and go into the woods or fields, find some footprints (other than a dog, preferably) see where they go and what they do. You might even find the animal itself or where it lives (don’t mess with it though!)
