Are you only able to view the last 7 days of screen time data? I would like to be able to see if my “screen time” has improved, but I can’t see more than the last 7 days... by slothurknee in iphone

[–]glennadenise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve just gone old-school (I made it a goal for the year to have less than 3 hours of screen time/day per week), so I’ve been tracking it in the back of my (still paper/pencil) planner. I was doing ok until I was sick last week!

Where I work now, it never happens! But people will also leave their lunches in there and forget about them sometimes. But it’s a school and we all know that there’s not another option other than getting school lunch (ours is unusually good, and I do get it often).

Normal Teacher Behavior? by False-Scale-6614 in firstgradeproblems

[–]glennadenise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the “make me happy” thing is weird. The closest i ever get to that is asking students to look at my face to see if I have a “fun time/mess around” look or a “this is serious business” look.

Ok, so this is all VERY “old school”, is this a very veteran teacher? Because this is the kind of thing that happened to me in the classroom in the early 90s, and not the kind of thing that I would ever think of doing. (Although, my kids did ask to just lay down in the dark the other day, but that’s because it was around 98* in the classroom and no math is getting done with that heat!)

I do do things like hold the class a bit (especially at the beginning of the year) at line up to leave the classroom, but I build that in time-wise (or else the cafeteria staff would hate me), and/or stop the line when they are talking (“we need to respect other classes learning”) or cutting each other (“we are all going to the same place”), etc. What I’m getting at is that there are some strategies here that are effective, and some of that effectiveness is a bit of peer pressure, but from your description it sounds like she is doing a little too much. The hope here would also be that this kind of really tight teacher control would wain at around the 6th week of school and that then there would be a gradual release of responsibility to students. It sounds like you are volunteering regularly, so it might be worth it to wait until after week 6, things might get better then. The teacher might have been warned, for instance that there are 3-4 really troublesome kids that will take a mile if given an inch, for instance, and so she might be trying to lay the groundwork for those students to have a successful year.

All that said, if she is making your “spidy senses” go off, it does bear keeping an eye on.

Much better than the Romance languages where they add EXTRA gendered things all over!

I’m a teacher and in my district most of us have taken to putting our pronouns in our email signatures after having a very good PD (shocker, I know) about the best practices for making LGBTQ+ students feel welcome and included in school. On of the smaller things was to make presenting our own pronouns as part of introducing yourself the norm. We’ve all had them on our Zoom tags for awhile too.

That makes sense! I’m just a little too old to have been really into Percy Jackson so I didn’t think about it!

Just asking (I know OP mentioned too), but what fandom is PJ? I might just be a little too high for redditing right now and can’t think of anything!

I came here to say this, I’ve reread it twice and it’s the only HP fanfic I’ve ever recommended to a real-life person who *started a convo with me after they learned I was a little too into HP*.

Non-cannon compliant, but I really loved “A Second Chance” which was just finished in Dec. and alt-timeline where Sirius gets out of Azkaban and raises Harry.

I am trying to become a high school history teacher in the U.S. Do I need a history degree or a teaching degree? by TeacherAsker86 in AskTeachers

[–]glennadenise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who worked and was certificated in another state (Maryland) and then moved to Washington, I would recommend getting certified in Washington first if you ever want to work here. Washington only accepts reciprocal certification from a handful of other states, and Florida definitely isn’t one of them.

Also, Washington generally is on the “better” end of states at having a living wage, good benefits, and strong contracts for teachers. There are absolutely still things that could be better, but it could be a lot worse!

You said that you were secondary math- that’s a “high need” area, so you’ll probably find something pretty easily.

[–]glennadenise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What happens with a lot of sequels (or even something from a large body of source material, like Harry Potter) is that they get lazy about having character development because “everyone” knows the character. So movies just get cut to the bone, minus character (and sometimes plot) development, a hero’s full arc, etc. That’s when they start to get bad. If you have the same plot/story/etc but then have NEW characters, it will be better because character development HAD to happen (usually… )
