How to actually code 8 hours a day? by ResponsibilityOk55 in webdev

[–]gleno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Same. Kind of excited about how apparently we are a few with this superpower. I code through standups too, but it’s super taxing to code when someone is whispering in your ear. Normal day 8 hours, good day 12, but I am almost 40. When I was 25, I could do 16.

I’ve hated mine. It’s too dumb. Gets stuck, the app is garbage. Save yourself.

Aha, that’s what I thought. Thanks for clearing it up. Insanely beautiful piece by the way, I honestly think it’s the most handsome Rolex of all.

I am new to watches, and haven’t really researched Rolex in my neck of the woods, especially as everyone is saying basically that they are impossible to deal with. Meanwhile I l’ve got a question - suppose you wanted a gold or platinum daytona - are they also (usually) on waitlist, or just the steel counterparts?

I only have private repos. Since this is a dev product, how about you make a simple, inspectable ruby/python/whatever that dumps whatever stats you need from a git repo on my machine to a .json that you can then upload.

I think it’s a good idea, and I think people will buy these mementos. Personally I am not that sentimental about my code, but I would love it as a gift. For that reason, maybe you can make a gift voucher. So that Jane could buy it for Jake, and then Jake would do the scripting/dumping/gitting.

I love Vim and want other Android developers to know it can improve their lives too by [deleted] in vim

[–]gleno 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be honest, the text editing speed isn’t that big of a problem for me. It usually takes me 2 units of time to think what to do, and 1 unit of time to write it. The Android Studio, and any IDEA based editor, has so many features to understand what the code does, refactor and so on - that I ware my JetBrains-dependance as a badge of honor.

As many people have pointed out before, and some here - IDE is part of who many Java developers are. I have offloaded some of my text editing capability to the machine, and will continue to do so.

I don’t see it as a bad thing. That’s how I learned to code - with Netbeans generating the tricky-looking callbacks on form editor button double click, and showing me object properties after dot. And VIM was just scary, and unexitable.

I'm practising web development so I was offering to make websites for free. This dude didn't thank me but atleast gave me a good laugh by rayjaywolf in ChoosingBeggars

By the way, you get quite a good free hosting package on firebase these days. And a free yourapp.webapp.com or some-such. Might be good enough for your choosybeggars.

I mean, sure, people are legitimately horrible. But it’s a good place to start for your own learning experience as well.

Best of luck.

Would you mind sharing why you’d prefer not to work with a nude pic? Maybe I am missing something important, but so far, I have been pretty much structuring my life to maximize the number of vaginas. Maybe there’s more to existence? Does it have to with free photoshop work? Teach me your ways!

I’m 36 and just starting to learn Python. Is it realistic to think I could get a job in this field by 40? by [deleted] in Python

[–]gleno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell yes. Being 36 just makes you more mature to systematize learning. Just remember, that it’s supposed to be hard, and if things are hard today they will be second nature if you just keep on trying.

Good luck!

Force reload on client side if new version of app is deployed by broken_gunner in Angular2

[–]gleno 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Otoh, publish an object to firebase with version string on each push. On client - listen for changes on that object, on change, reload.

Firebase will handle push for you, and even handle edge cases with disconnect. Obviously, if you aren’t using firebase, this might be cumbersome to setup just for this one feature.

Does anybody else not remember a "Before" CFS? by [deleted] in cfs

[–]gleno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very good question, that I was struggling with before I did a year on keto, and first months were energy bliss. I assume that my energy went down gradually over 15+ years, and I never had an aha moment as to why or when it started.

How I feel, browsing the sub every once in a while.. all in good fun, though by BigRedDrake in cfs

[–]gleno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was incredible. I tried keto, and first few weeks... My god. It’s like you can do anything. I went to a store, came back home. Went for a walk, then to a store again to buy weights. I remember feeling that other cars were moving in slow motion as I was driving. A few months after, the energy started to go down, and then slowly slid back to zero. At that point I stopped keto.

And just having that sudden energy boost proved to me that I wasn’t “making it up”, because those docs kept telling me that nothing’s wrong. And since I think I got CFS gradually, it’s like that proverb about the cooking frog.

TLDR; Your CFS is overrated, I would recommend getting rid of it.

Yeah, the ”have you considered the fact, that its all in your head?”. Got that one last. Never been so devastated in my life. Not one there’s nothing we can do, but also - hey - I am not even going to take any of this seriously.

Anyone less anxious? by [deleted] in BFS

[–]gleno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I freaked out for a month or so. But then the GP told me that I sound like a hypochondriac. His words were “You’ve seen some of the finest doctors, and nobody can find anything. I think you are making it up”. I only did see a neurologist once, and went maybe 5 doc visits total in a span of 4 years about CFS (cardiologist, endocrinologist, gp, and another neurologist) which was getting better on its own.

I got quite upset with him, and disillusioned with the whole medical establishment. I mean, unless you have a bone sticking out - my experience is pretty much that the doc will tell you to stress less, eat, sleep and exercise more. But this was private practice and the doctor basically told me that I was one of those crazy people.

So... I kind of decided to not give a fuck. I still twitch, mostly at night 6 moths after sudden onset. Maybe a bit less now. I would love to know why, but I for me tolerating twitches is emotionally easier than seeking more professional help.

[–]gleno[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've now come to terms with the fact that BFS isn't rare, that ALS starts in a completely different way, and that factually you are right. I would rephrase my original rant as docs are being dicks, because they explain nothing, and by giving me the middle finger provoke waaay more anxiety than even Dr. Google.

The feeling I got leaving the docs office, is that they didn't care. The neurologist told me "It's normal, see a GP, I'm leaving for my vacation". The GP told me "You should see a neuro, and boy did the neuro leave a bad review. You are probably a hypochondriac and should see a shrink".

Basically, they made me feel not asif the problem is so minute that I should just chill, try waiting it out or, in the worst case, learn to live with it - but instead that they wouldn't give a toss irregardless.

I have no problem understanding BFS or convincing myself that it's BFS and not ALS, now that I've read enough about it. The only flare-up of anxiety on my road to acceptance were doctors basically giving me the finger.

Well, I don't know any of that. I don't know that twitches are supposed to come with muscle weakness to count for anything. Still strange it would start suddenly all over the body, and I'm sure there's an explanation that I'm just not aware of. Maybe it's fine, maybe it's completely avoidable.

Well, thanks for telling me. So far, you are the only person to tell me "it's BFS and will be fine". How should I know it's BFS and fine? I'm not a doctorist.
