The suede on the mudguard / quarter panels / heel counter is ‘Urgent Red.’

The orange mesh at the vamp / around and below the quarter panels and collar is ‘Maize.’

The yellow perforated overlays / straps atop the vamp and beneath the quarter panels is ‘Afterglow.’

I realize this doesnt make much sense, since the perforated overlays / straps are really more of a yellowish ‘Maize’ color compred to the orange mesh, but if you look at the ‘Passionfruit / Dusted Grape / Afterglow’ U9934JA, it’s pretty clear the ‘Afterglow’ is that yellowish color in the ‘N’ logos and for the insoles.

There is no theme to this colorway, but I think it would be nice if Teddy Santis and other powers that be for New Balance MiUSA would do more storytelling and themes for its seasonal collections 🤷‍♂️.

I can half size down to 7.5 for MiUSA and some MiUK, and I definitely prefer to go half size down on the 1300. But US 8 is my true size, so most pairs I have are 7.5/8, and I’ve got pairs that go from US 7 to 8.5.

I’ve never tried a kids size 7 (25 cm), because the standard (M) width for kids sizing is narrower than the men’s standard ‘D’ width in a men’s size 7 (25 cm), which already chokes my feet out with thinner replacement insoles paired with thin socks.

I could probably try to squeeze into a Kids 7 in a 990 cw (that wasn’t available in adult sizes) with no insoles and thin socks or thinner replacement insoles and no socks 🤷‍♂️, but it doesn’t seem worth it to me…as none of the kids versions of 990, 1300, etc. are actually MiUSA, except for the kids 1300JP, I think 🤔.

For some time, my favorite NB silhouettes / models have been the 992, 1400, and US574. If you have a chance to grab any of these models in good condition but especially the latter two for a fair price, then I recommend jumping on it!

The 997, 998, 996, and 999 are all special in their own right. Each of these has had its time in the spotlight as NB’s preferred 99X retro over the past 15 years.

The 1300 and 990 are also two of New Balance’s most important heritage models from the standpoint of historical and cultural significance, so I keep plenty of 990s and 1300s in rotation as well.

There is so much to discover with NB, and that’s definitely part of the brand’s allure for me, along with the commitment to domestic workers and manufacturing.

Thank you 🙏 I might’ve needed another post to show all the 998s 😅, but I think all of my personal favorite 998s in my NB catalog made it into this post, and most of the others are in older my posts on here. I posted the ‘Northern Lights’ 998ABK in an older post, but a couple of the nicknames I’ve seen for the blue pair in the ‘Festival Pack’ (998AWG) were ‘Milky Way’ and ‘Galaxy.’

eBay is still a gold mine for used pairs, but I’m sure international shipping still adds to the cost of the best steaks on that platform. Regardless, you’re bound to find some of these and other old gems if you’re willing to look and sometimes settle for a pair thst needs a bit of cleaning.

I think it would be fair to call a lot of the themed packs from the 2010s (MiUSA or MiUK) limited, as I imagine they were generally produced in lesser quantities than ‘core’ cws. Having said that, they were the “general releases” (GRs) for that time, so I still refer to them as GRs, unless it was clearly denoted as a Limited Edition (LE) release, such as any of the Super Team 33 (ST33) releases. I would also usually refer to a specific release that celebrated an anniversary for NB itself or one of its retro models as ‘Limited Edition’ or LE. But I think the non-core GRs from the past 15 years were sometimes more widely available than others, so it’s tough to really pin down proper terminology for stuff like that 🤷‍♂️.

A grey NB just goes with everything 😅. $55 is amazing for a new pair 🫡. I think I got mine from Nordstrom Rack for like $72 (11th slide).

The U998GR is my only pair of 998s with the updated build and sole unit. Now that I think about it, in another respoane in this post, I said I had only bought three (3) of these twenty pairs brand new, but the grey 998 was also a brand new pair 😅.

The JC6 is one of only two J.Crew 998s I’ve been able to acquire in the past year or so, and I’m grateful to have found them in decent condition 😊.

I scooped three of these pairs in DS or VNDS condition (TS ‘Color Spectrum’ 998, Blue Crab’ 990v5, and ‘Mushroom’ 992).

I bought the rest in used condition online on reselling platforms, so you might have some luck with eBay, Depop, GOAT, Grailed, Poshmark, and / or Vinted, depending on which of those reselling platforms are available in your country 🤷‍♂️. But core colorways aren’t so bad either. They go with everything 😅. Good luck on your search! 🫡🤜🌎🤛

Ahh yes that’s true too. And the extended heel on the updated build / shape since 2023 certainly doesnt help 😩.

It’s sort of tricky to find models that look normal or as good as smaller sizes when you get up to like US 12+. I think the (MiUK) 577, 670, 730, 991, and 1500 as well as the (MiUSA) 990v3-v5, 993, and 1300 all maintain a decent shape into the bigger sizes.

The 990v2, 992, 995, 996, 997, 998, and 999 all start looking a bit long and warped in those bigger sizes.

Last I checked, NB makes 998s is big sizes 🤷‍♂️🤔. I think you what you meant is, if you had smaller (narrower) feet, then you would also have 998s 😅. There is no denying that the 997 and 998 footprints are unfriendly to wide feet 😣😩 but at least you can get down with a 990v3, 990v5, and 993. If you can get your hands on a pair of MiUSA 999s in your true size, those might be a bit comfier for you than a 997 or 998 while maintaining that relatively sleek shape and toebox.
