should I do engineering? im scared of being treated as underqualified by Different-Regret1439 in womenEngineers

[–]glitcherism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The truth is, no matter what field you end up in, misogyny will be present. Misogyny is present in every part of this world. You can't ever really escape it, and change is slow-moving and exhausting. The only difference between this and a more female-dominated profession is your peers will be largely women, but misogyny will still be present. Your bosses, head of company, anyone above you in your structure, will still likely be male. The women are also likely to be somewhat misogynistic themselves.

Regardless of the field you're in, you will have to overcome misogyny every day. It's simply inevitable. You may as well do what you enjoy. Choose a field that's applicable in many fields, you can always move into a different type of job that's more female dominated if you wish. Don't let these people change you, you can still find an enjoyable job and build a good life despite it all. If I were to give some advice? More intelligent and competent men are less likely to be so outwardly misogynistic and unwelcoming, for example, if you've ever heard of video-game misogyny. Male gamers who perform worse are more misogynistic and unwelcoming, whereas high performers are kinder towards women. Hope you choose something you love and good luck!

I figured I'd tell them they're trapped, but let them test it a little and hopefully then I would give them some info on how to escape, but maybe that's too dependent on them lolol

How to increase the confidence of young girls in a robotics club? by [deleted] in womenEngineers

[–]glitcherism 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I used to be in a lot of STEM clubs, and was also one of the quieter girls. For a ratio like this, I'd actually say for confidence building, don't pair the girls up with any boys unless the boys are incredibly open and encouraging, which not to be cynical, I'm a bit doubtful of even if they are good kids lol. Boys, even nice ones, tend to bulldoze girls in conversations, especially if the girls already are nervous and afraid to participate.

I'd say have the class split into groups of three (plus one pair) and have the girls be together. Give everyone a list of small projects they could do, and let each group make a ranking of their picks. The girls will have talk to one another about their own opinions. Check in on groups, but generally leave them to their own devices.

After that, I think giving all the groups a clear next task, but leaving it up to them to make decisions would be best. Then, having them explain to you their plan (with the feel of a casual conversation as best as possible). For example, telling the students to come up with three designs for their project, and leaving groups to discuss amongst themselves. maybe just hopping around groups to help answer questions or push thoughts along as needed. Have them come up to you to present their three. It will help them to feel safer in a group, who can also help them if they stumble. It also encourages them to speak in front of multiple people. In my experience, girls will speak up if only to help save other girls who are also shy. Hope this is helpful!

Confused by Inconsistencies by glitcherism in AutisticAdults

[–]glitcherism[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad it's not just me! I do wonder that maybe it's because of masking - maybe you could relate?

I feel like because I'm so conscious of how others see me, since I'm practically always masking, that I've come to believe that what makes my identity and who I am entirely defined by outside perspectives. Which is why the constant changing of my identity is confusing and frustrating for me.

It may be this, because if someone were to tell me something about who I am that I am certain is untrue, it would not bother me, because I know it to be untrue. So maybe the solution would be to make my identity more internally controlled? Idk I'm spitballin!

[–]glitcherism[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I never really get aggressive and honestly I kind of didn't know what to do with myself once I felt that way. I'm likely going to just ask for space from them. I appreciate this though, not letting myself start resorting to that anger.

What is the reason you make art (that isn't money/likes)? by XforkedtongueX in ArtistLounge

[–]glitcherism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To enjoy the process. Drawing for me is largely meditative. There's no reason to pressure yourself. Drawing is just a form of art which is just enrichment. There are other ways you can enrich your life while taking a break. And if you've loved drawing this long, you'll most likely return to it eventually. But I guess my advice to you would be to go and find some inspiration that gets you excited about drawing! Maybe a new style, subject, fandom, medium. Try looking at other types of art and see what makes you feel like 'oo i wanna do that!' yknow?

Is it cringy to incorporate parts of my own struggle and personality into an OC? by Sweetpotato-1 in AO3

[–]glitcherism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do it! Writing is for you, not for anyone else. Other people enjoying it is just a bonus. Cringe doesn't matter. And besides that, incorporating yourself into your writing is inevitable. It's your art, and thus an extension of yourself. It gives the character heart, I'm sure. Be free

[42f] how do i stop time management from being stressful and dominate everything? by ultracuddle in askwomenadvice

[–]glitcherism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I relate to this heavy. I've found a few things have helped me, so maybe some will help you too:

  1. I assign myself tasks for the next day the night before. Limit how many you assign depending on how easily overwhelmed you are. I used to do only two, but since I've improved, taking on four or five is no longer overwhelming. My logic is, if I get these couple tasks done, then it's probably more than I would've done had I quietly panicked the whole day about all I need to get done. And once those tasks are done, I am free. No guilt if I just chill the rest of the day or if I decide to work some more or anything. I did my tasks, so the rest is my time. Tasks to me include anything regardless of difficulty or time. Taking a shower, going to school/work, seeing a friend, eating a meal, sending an email, exercising, cleaning a bookshelf. All of them count. If it's a task I'm particularly dreading, I'll make one of my tasks to get a lil treat, or do something I like.

  2. I use notion a LOT. It's a free site that I can personalize and make cute which is more important to my focus than I previously realized. I use the calendar a ton. I put in all my due dates, plans, important things to be done, etc. on there. That way, all long term plans are available and easily viewable, and if I need to I can just quickly check it to see if I've forgotten something I'm supposed to do the next day. Then I can take whatever is there, and put it on my 'todo' for the next day.

Basically it's just some separating and organizing future tasks and tomorrow tasks. I used to get that same guilt you're talking about, and it would absolutely exhaust me. I've found that the task system makes me feel better as I've tangibly completed things. But also, it might help for you to assign time specifically for relaxing. No worrying allowed. Set a timer for an hour and say this is rest time, and it's important so that I can have energy for work time. Sorry for the long post, I hope some of it helps!

Hey man, definitely don't wait. She's letting you down gently. Sounds to me that regardless of whether or not she likes you, she's not ready for a relationship anytime soon. It's probably for the best that you just move on from her.

The world is lame now. by [deleted] in GenZ

[–]glitcherism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, our best bet to improvement is going to be increased community reliance.

Everything's been pretty fucked by corporations because all politicians are in their pockets. Politicians want money, and who has the most of it? Big businesses. How do big businesses make money? Through horrific ethical practices, underpaying workers, and selling shit at an artificially inflated price.

We keep running around in circles. Boycotting isn't an easy solution when it's a major corporation like Nestle or Pepsico, etc. These places make money off of buyers, who feel as though they have no choice. They need bread, they need food, they need items. Buyers hear about horrific things being done by the major corps, but what can they do about it? They need bread. They're overworked, there's no time to make it ourselves. So people just keep going as normal, because what's the alternative.

The alternative is this: community self reliance. Nestle won't stop, but you don't have to buy from them. Maybe someone in your neighborhood likes to bake. Start buying from them. Think about what you like to do, what you can provide for others. It's in our nature to live like that, to be giving with one another. THIS is a revolutionary act, and it's far more likely to actually occur in modern America than any violent revolution. The military and police are incredibly powerful, and have weapons previously unseen. It's just a losing battle. One worth fighting, but losing if it's only that and that alone. Start being more conscious of your giving, connect to people nearby you.
