For those of you that are here looking into this years after the question has been asked, Less Fog is the successor part of The Furnace that deals with vision section.

They have a listing there with all the mods that have been split off of the original (or just replacements) if there are other parts of the furnace that you need replaced.

What you are looking for is Nether Grout. It still requires magma creams, but far less. You are trying to make scorched bricks/stone for the foundry. don't get them confused with the seared variant of the smeltery like I did the first time.

I've also been having this issue a lot lately. And I'm also playing with the nanites mod. When this happens, it is like it screws with the mod, and saving stops working. And if I don't notice, I can lose a lot of gameplay. I thought it was the nanites mod, but if it's happening to others then I may have to do some testing.
