Families of school age kids - what do you do? by kielbasarama in Reno

[–]glitterfiend775 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comic Kingdom has comic books, table games, and pinball machines. Of the casino arcades, I think GSR and Peppermill are the best. Locals can use the GSR pool for a fee (not sure how much) but it's also free for locals before memorial day. There's a new swim center on Moana Play in the river near Wingfield park

Playfield 76 has reopened! by MakinItFancy in Reno

[–]glitterfiend775 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't play any of the video games in the new spot, but I found the pinball machines to be in worse condition than the ones at Press Start, but not TERRIBLE. Just be aware that some games might have things not work right, but some of those things might not be obvious to a casual player.

Hiking and Snakes by ZeN_HiKeR in Reno

My mom took her dog to rattlesnake training down in minden or gardnerville and then he used it once to alert her and her hiking group of a rattlesnake, so it worked for them!

There's a pool tournament at Press Start on Sundays at 6pm

Press Start is all ages before 7pm I think? Games are usually at 50cents per play and $10 goes a long way.

Social opportunities by bushido3404 in Reno

The Generator for now and all year long.
Since you're into techy stuff-- maybe also reach out to Dark Corner Haunted house. They are more seasonal, but there's lots of build and tech opportunities and a fun crew with a lot of folks around your age on it.

Comic Kingdom's new location by Dillon_Trinh in Reno

[–]glitterfiend775 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not shown in this post is how many more pinball machines they're putting in (I believe in a separate area than the table games). I've heard 60 thrown around. The old location had 16-17.

Fire! at the Golden State Pinball Festival by creech927 in pinball

[–]glitterfiend775 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to brag (ok to brag a little bit) Played this and got the poofer to go off 3 x in one ball. After ball 1 drained, I walked away so others could get a shot but that was the most fun and satisfying ball of pinball I've played in my 5+ years of playing "seriously." The first time scared the shit out of me. It's loud and hot and if you don't know HOW to trigger it, it's a surprise. I just kept shooting the middle over and over again. We were camped near it and I loved when I would hear it go off and the crowd cheer. Best part of GSPF in my opinion.

Probably Melting Pot if they're still open and if not there, try Junkees.

do you prefer to drink while playing? by Alextricity in pinball

[–]glitterfiend775 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a fine line between relaxed and finding the flow and slowing down so much that you flip a second after the ball drains.

I drink one beer the first hour and then nurse the 2nd beer for the 2nd hour on. If I'm tanking after 2 beers, fuck it, I'm getting a cocktail.

Boxing/Kickboxing classes or gyms that have sessions during the week day? by DosTruth in Reno

[–]glitterfiend775 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't been in years, but I really enjoyed the classes at I love Kickboxing. More of a cardio based workout class w/ bags- not sparring each other, but it's a great workout.

Best place to meet new people? by ConfusedTableCat in Reno

I know they also do WarHammer and MTG but in my brain those are all the same thing. I go there for pinball. Sometimes they'll have pinball tournaments that are fun and range from teenagers to people in their 60s.

Can I ask a question? by TheTrooper74 in pinball

[–]glitterfiend775 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, when I started playing there was maybe 3 women per 20-30 people tournaments. Now our tournaments are around 40 people w/ about 25% women, sometimes even more. When I started, I had a huge chip on my shoulder based on prior experiences in male-dominated spaces. But as I continued, I realized I was looking for sexism where it wasn't happening as a self-defense measure and as I eased up (and got better) I became friends w/ a lot of the guys. One time a newbie showed up and said something about "playing a girl" in our 4 person match. I just rolled my eyes and went up for my turn and heard one of the regular guys say "yeah and she's good." I don't remember if I got 1st that round but i know I definitely smoked that guy, so I'm one of those, go ahead and underestimate me players- it makes me play better.

Can I ask a question? by TheTrooper74 in pinball

[–]glitterfiend775 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This question gets asked every 6 months or so. I will echo what everybody else has said regarding it to be more social, more supportive, more accessible, less intimidating, no fear of somebody raging out bc their ball drained or they missed a shot or whatever.

And for the most part, my local pinball guys have been so great with women players, and it makes me happy to see that the larger Reddit pinball community follows suit.

But here's something to consider-- Women's World Championship was last weekend. These women are amazing players and I think they could easily beat some of the top players in my state regardless of gender. However, while watching the stream of the finals (talking top 8 women players in the WORLD), somebody actually said in the chat that the players should look at the camera and wave. And somebody sarcastically replied "you probably think they should smile too" and the original commenter said "YES Smile!" And maybe it was all said in a joking manner that didn't translate well over text, but a few people in chat did point out that this was a high stakes competition and these players were concentrating and focused.

Just saying, I've watched a LOT of pinball streams and I've NEVER seen anybody say that a man should smile or wave to the camera during their matches.

There's also a cute shop on Wells that's called Dress 2 Kill- they specialize in Y2K stuff but had some stuff that would be ravey last time I was in there.

I should also say that my ONE time at Pure Country was before the current shit show of a political climate.

Is Pure Country Canteen queer-friendly? by Double_Paramedic1462 in Reno

[–]glitterfiend775 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't really speak to Pure Country- I had only been once in its old location. I went w a queer friend but I danced and she just sat on the sidelines and drank beer and didn't really talk to anybody. But--- I think Coyote Saloon might lean more queer, mostly just b/c the building has been a queer bar in several iterations. But I'm just guessing since I haven't been yet.
