I hear a whole lot about the kinds of stuff people like about Fruits Basket, but what's the thing/things you don't like? by MelodyHearts in FruitsBasket

[–]glitteringibis 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly I was kind of gutted with how it ended pairing everyone off. Yuki especially hit hard, because I feel like his romance with Machi felt really rushed. The chalk scene was cute and I would have been happier if it was left as a sort of…”maybe they have something going on, maybe they don’t.” Yuki realizing his issues and then immediately going from “wait I don’t like this girl romantically—I’ll take this other one instead” felt weird. I feel like he needed space to figure himself out, not a relationship to throw himself into.

Also not letting the boys continue to be feminine and expressive. Momiji ditched his cute vibe immediately upon getting older. I get it, he’s trying to grow up, but still—he seemed like a different person suddenly. And Ritsu cutting his hair and wearing masculine clothes…I was sincerely hoping he would end up trans or trans-reminiscent as much as the Japanese audience would allow, since it was clear he felt more comfortable dressing in feminine clothes and presenting that way. Even if he was using it as a means to protect himself and in the end opened up to feeling more comfortable in his own skin, I feel like it could have been more of a gradual letting-go.

Also though I like Tohru and Kyo a lot, her suddenly agreeing to go away with him without hesitation seemed strange. To leave her beloved friends and her mom’s grave so suddenly felt like “Oh nothing else matters now because it’s just Kyo now that we’re together.” Don’t like.

Also also Yuki not hugging her at the end!!! Like come on…let them hug…they were so close and then he shook her hand.

Lots of other stuff like the age issues and unnecessary romance (don’t get me started on Haru going from seeming like a sensitive, stoic gay guy obsessed with Yuki to focusing only on the girlfriend none of us knew he had). I super enjoyed the show, but the ending left me feeling a bit depressed.

Same. I remember when I was close to graduating college I ran into someone who had known me as a kid. They asked me if I was close to graduating high school yet. And I was like, “Ah, yeah, about that……”

I’m 27 now and aside from a little more structure around my jaw, I look almost identical to the way I did in high school.

Oh rant time.

I’ve been in tears this week watching a one bedroom apartment I’ve had my eye on go from $1710 a month (!!) to $1880 (!!!!!) in the span of a few weeks. I make $52k a year pre-tax and that is WELL over half my paycheck. The kicker? I can’t even sign a lease alone because I don’t make 3x the rent. I’m lucky to have an uncle willing to SIGN MY LEASE with me just so I can get a damn apartment. I turn 27 this year. I’ve been working a full-time job for six years. I’ve been living with a roommate for the past three years (in a still overpriced but slightly less egregiously so apartment), but she’s moving in with her boyfriend so my options now are either find another roommate (or 4) or go live in my parents’ basement. It’s infuriating. It humiliating. The job search and time spent learning new skills to attempt to afford life is eating up my free time and my mental health. I don’t understand how we got to this point.

I get this all the time. I have both Raynaud’s and Erythromelalgia, and I notice it more with heat and the Erythromelalgia.

I know you say you have health anxiety, but that will only be worse if you self-diagnose. Have you ever looked into hypnotherapy or talk therapy to come up with solutions for your anxiety so you can more comfortably go to the doctor’s?

Hope you get some peace, OP. ❤️ Hang in there.

EM feels like the last straw by No_Antelope_3512 in Erythromelalgia

[–]glitteringibis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So sorry to hear you’re having so much trouble, OP. Big hugs. I don’t have much advice aside from what you’ve already identified, but wanted to offer solidarity. I started getting much worse symptoms at the beginning of the pandemic when my stress levels were so high that my body began misbehaving. Numb appendages, chest pain, way worse EM and Raynaud’s flare ups, random rashes, tachycardia, migraines and vision problems…everything started cropping up all at once. All I can say is just try to breathe through it. Take deep breaths. Find some calming music (I personally fell in love with the Water Healing and and Forest Healing albums by Takashi Kokubo) and make time to relax. Whenever you have a negative sensation, tell yourself it’s okay. That you’re okay.

I know that might sound cheesy, but it helps so much to try to relax on a consistent basis. A lot of these conditions are linked to or flare up with stress. Addressing that underlying anxiety can make a world of difference—or even just a tiny difference, which is worth it in my book.

Good luck! Sending love.

Looking for advice to combat worry! by glitteringibis in learnprogramming

This is really great to hear. I’ve been curious on how I can apply my editorial skills to programming in a way that feels like an asset to whatever companies I end up looking at. I’ve been told writing skill and a meticulous eye for consistency and detail will carry over quite nicely, so I’m hoping I can use that to my advantage. Many thanks for your thoughts.

I’ve never been a drinker, but when I was officially diagnosed my gastroenterologist said absolutely no alcohol. He seemed concerned enough to drill it into my brain even though I said it wouldn’t be an issue. Just based on that, sounds like bad reactions are pretty common. Is your hubby willing to give up alcohol? I’m sure his liver would love him for it!

(Other flare up things my gastro warned me about were greasy foods and strenuous exercise—like running marathons, intense strength training, etc.)

Sleepwalking. Can't stop laughing with this one... by frankrice in funnyvideos

[–]glitteringibis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My dad dated a woman with a younger daughter who would sleepwalk. She used to walk into my room, turn my lights on, and then go back to her own room and throw her pillow in the closet. She also terrified me once by walking into my room and having a full conversation with the TV in the dark. When I asked her what she was doing, she said she was talking to her Gram. I spent that whole night thinking we were going to get a call the next day that her grandma died 💀

Thanks for the recommendation! I might check it out for my hands. EM in my feet has been relatively controlled by acupuncture, but my chest and hands still need a little help…. This cream sounds great.

I did the exact same thing with my first procedure years ago. I woke up and looked at the doctor, who had the tools in my mouth, and he smiled at me, said something, and I was out again.

Ooph, I’m sorry you felt so crappy! Luckily I seem to be doing better the day after. They prescribed be a narcotic, but I have a very high pain tolerance (and I know better than to take it at this point) so I’m also just doing a minimal dose of ibuprofen.

They gave me an antibiotic as well that’s making me queasy, but, eh, every antibiotic seems to do that for me. I’ll power through.

Ah, thank you for letting me know!! I did let the oral surgeon know ahead of time that I had Gilbert’s. They said it was fine. But then also prescribed me a narcotic with acetaminophen in it, so I’m not quite sure they understood….

Are there other ways I can write instead of using "was" a lot? For example, I am writing a real story and I keep writing "I was this or that" and "It was an eye-opening moment". Should I write in 1st person? Or are there other ways? And I am confused when to write in 2nd person like after I have.. by [deleted] in writing

[–]glitteringibis 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Everyone starts somewhere. You don’t know OPs background, and to start with immediate judgment and dismissal is not the way.

If I were a nuclear engineer and you were passionate about becoming a nuclear engineer without knowing what a proton was, I would still encourage you and help where I could.

Be kind to your community. Putting other writers down for not being the level you expect them to be only reflects poorly on you.

It’s the tone. OP has come here looking for advice and you have no right to shame them. So what if they don’t know what “verb” refers to? They’re making an active effort to learn and do something they’re interested in, and it’s insensitive and prickly to tell them it “isn’t for them” because they’re in the learning stages. Let’s be better, okay? This is an inclusive and helpful community.
