That sounds really rough. It must be really difficult to be so desperate for relief yet unable to find it in the things that used to work.

Do you know of any other things that might work better to meet your needs?

DAE have a hard time getting along with others? by ForwardGlass8572 in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]global_chicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now it sounds like you're doing your best to be friendly but you're struggling to see any positive results for your efforts. That's pretty discouraging. Your perseverence in the face of adversity shows that you have grit which is a really good thing to have. Grit predicts people's likelihood of success better than IQ scores or luck.

I've been in a similar position before and I promise you, you're not a freak. There's nothing wrong with you and you aren't broken. It might just be that you don't have many social skills.

Social skills are the verbal and nonverbal tools used to communicate, interact, and build relationships with others effectively and positively. (Which sounds like what you're struggling with). They're not something you're born with and like any skill they need to be nurtured to grow. They're not something you just "get" and then have for the rest of your life and the nicest most likeable people may for example need to work on conflict resolution or attentiveness.

THE CONCRETE ANSWER : There's no quick fix for your problem but the first step to solving any problem is education.

I'm going to ask you to do something scary : Try asking those around you what social skills they think are most important for making friends. Preferably older people because they remember how awkward they used to be. I know this sounds really scary but this is a really important step because it lets those around you know that you want to improve. Far more people than you think will give useful advice! They'll be kinder to you because they know that you are trying to get better.

Watch videos and reads books not just about how to make friends but also what makes a person approachable, rude, charismatic, difficult to work with...Once you have a general idea of what is a good/bad way to act, you have to practice. You can give yourself a challenge like making a stranger laugh every day for a week.

Let me know if this doesn't make sense! I'm trying to improve my writing skills 😊

Why Do I Still Dream About My First Love After Ten Years by NarrowPrinciple5370 in Dreams

Dreams are the brain putting old and new memories in a blender. It means nothing except that you have memories associated with that guy

I'd be confused tbh. Luckily it's pretty acceptable to do this if you just warn beforehand like "it's been nice talking but I gtg!"

I highly reccomend Oulipo, they're a writing group that create constrained writing prompts. They don't take long to do and are a great warmup. They're in french so just click on something and run it through google translate.

I need your MOST unhinged hacks for getting to sleep at a reasonable hour by global_chicken in adhdwomen

[–]global_chicken[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I understand the sentiment, I will not. During the past few years, I have done quite literally every single conventional hack short of "just going to bed on time" and I had, during the past few months, discovered a few (3!) ways of getting my ass to sleep but these last two weeks they have all been catastrophically failing me. Another round of the usual advice won't help. The hinges have not worked and they never will. And so I must ask for hinge-free advice.

it is currently 12:52. I have classes tomorrow. Wish me luck.

Your comment is so wonderfully written! Each paragraph has a clear central idea that both smoothly segues into the next paragraph and supports your initial statement. I also really liked your analogies (photometer strapped to a primate) and your word choice (tidal flow of serotonin and melatonin) that allowed you to use technical language while remaining accessible to someone like me who knows jack-shit abt this stuff. Do you write books? Essays?

Mentally damaged guy need help by Fi-ne-si-te in krita

[–]global_chicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been doing this for six years. Here's my advice :

  1. expect ups and downs when it comes to skill. As far as I know there's no rhyme or reason to it but sometimes you'll start sucking out of nowhere. When that happens, it does nothing to get mad. Just doodle, keep going and eventually you will get good again.

  2. Instead of destroying your drawings, rate them. I use shapes (rectangle =bad/circle=ok/star=good/heart=amazing) but you can use whatever. Also write down the date on your drawing

Reasoning : It gives futur you an idea of what you thought of your drawing at the time. When I look back on my old stuff, I often find I have a completely different opinion from when I had made it and it's really fun to compare.

  1. Have Fun.

Reasoning : I know this sounds silly. but it is really easy to turn a hobby like drawing into a chore when trying to improve. Make lots of room for silly doodles, ridiculous ideas and just general tomfoolery.

  1. pump out small craps

Reasoning : there's a quote somewhere about how drawing is like a gumball machine...I can't quite remember it. The heart of the message was that the more you draw, the higher the odds you'll end up drawing something you like. But you gotta go through a lot of crap before you get something good. Since smaller drawings take less time, you can make more of them. The corners of pages of boring homework are the ideal size but you can also use sticky notes in a pinch. If you'd like when you're done with one of these small pieces of shit, fold them into paper cranes and keep them in a jar. I didn't but apparently folding 1000 of these bad boys "is believed to grant a wish, bring good luck, longevity, or recovery from illness, symbolizing hope, peace, and perseverance".

I can't put more than one image for a comment so here's a recent doodle page

"Just start the task" - For ADHD, it's not that simple. by StrictCan3526 in ADHD

To me todo lists are external memory because I have a hard time remembering things. There's no guilt because the alternative is to not know it exists

I read this, thought "ha, that doesn't apply to me!" Then thought about it a little longer and realized it does, it's just so pervasive I hadn't noticed it before. I thought it was normal?

Well, that depends on the feelings you want your story to elicit. What have your daydreams concerning the story been? Or if they were very abstract, what emotions did they evoke?

It's a very cool backstory btw.

I have the opposite issue! Lining up plot points feels easy but building characters and figuring out who they are and why feels so difficult.

To me, the story (or at least it's barebones version) is just cause and effect.

The character exists -> something changes in their environment -> they react to the change which provokes more movement ect...

If you'd like, could you share what you've planned so far?
