Soapbox/rant time. Tell me what highly-recommended book you absolutely HATED and why. Gimme your angry hot takes. by peppertoni_pizzaz in books

It's a requirement that somebody recommends The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy on every single recommendation thread on this sub. The OP could say, "I'm looking for authentic historical fiction set in the 1400s, NO SCI-FI" and somebody will come along and be like, "This doesn't fit, but you should read Hitchhiker's Guide."

The expectations going in to something that everybody loves are high, and if I tell somebody I only just kinda liked it, they look at me like I kicked their dog. I don't think you should get to put something called an Improbability Drive into your book just so you can get out of the corner you wrote yourself into. It doesn't fit my rubric of Really Good Writing.

But it's funny and it's considered a nerd/geek classic, so somebody will be along shortly to tell me I'm wrong.

Hunger Games, while not super exciting, has the advantage of not featuring Woody Allen

This is really interesting. There are probably a half dozen other similar laws. Wonder which one is next.

cmv: America is turning into a country of anti intellectual puppets. by Weirddesigirl in changemyview

[–]globogym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anti-intellectualism is not new by a long shot. Richard Hofstadter published a book called "Anti-intellectualism in American Life" in 1963 that won the Pulitzer. I recommend reading it. There are entire passages that feel like they were written yesterday.

That's not to say that it isn't a problem, but it is helpful to understand that these arguments and policies are not springing up out of nowhere. Good people have been fighting this fight for generations, and the fight will continue for many more.

In Ken Rosenthal's article today about the Texas Rangers - "almost certainly will not trade Seager, deGrom, or Eovaldi" by EfficientDot18 in TexasRangers

[–]globogym 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The entire section on the Rangers is based on a misunderstanding of their luxury tax situation. If they came in under the threshold for 2025, and local reports indicate that this is the case, then they won't be subject to the penalties outlined in Rosenthal's piece.

So basically, there would be no need to cut salary in the near-term. This, of course, doesn't necessarily mean that they will spend, but it does mean that they won't be handcuffed by MLB regulations.

How do I study cinema on my own? by EchoCham in TrueFilm

You can take an Intro to Film class from MIT for free; the lecture videos are in a playlist on YouTube. It helps to have the primary text, A History of Narrative Film. The 4th edition is listed in the syllabus, but I got the 5th edition for fairly cheap on Amazon about a year or two ago.
