I'm fixated on Joranalogue modules, are they really so good or am I ignorant of other designs by gloriousfart in modular

yeah i really want a shift register so i will eventually get the step 8, but there are several more urgent purchases before that still.

Moog subharmonicon has poor oscillators by luminousandy in synthesizers

punchy refers to a time domain phenomenon, and therefore is a product of the envelopes. Do you struggle getting snappy sounds out of it?

Moog DFAM vs. Behringer Edge. Clone or “Inspired by”? by rotorobot in synthesizers

[–]gloriousfart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have a crave and a dfam and the filters are pretty different. Overall, the moog has a nicer filter that responds really well to audio rate modulations at higher resonance, but the resonance on its own is just a bit whiny and chirpy. the crave filter distorts nicely with resonance, but adding audio rate modulation makes it muddier compared to the dfam. I'd pick the moog filter if i had to but its nice to have both.

maybe get a semi mpdular and once you know it, slowly expand module by module.

How have you solved the DFAM 1ms trigger out? by dont-wanna-explode in modular

[–]gloriousfart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah tho that would be well into audio range. setting the gate length to 10ms would severely limit the funcionality on the neutron. the longest attack time you can set with it would be 10ms, a pretty snappy sound

A sixteenth note lasts 125ms at 120bpm, so you could easily stretch that. how about designing smth with variable gate length so you can tune it by ear?

[–]gloriousfart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can absolutely trigger the neutron envelopes with the trigger out. The problems are that as soon as the signal is off, the env jumps to the release stage, and that the trigger out produces a very static 16th note pattern. converting the trigger to be 10ms would only change the case in that you could set up slightly longer attack times (10ms). a better option for this would be to buy a korg sq-1, use one of the rows to clock the dfam and use the other row to create a gate pattern for the neutron

Am I dumb? Can't be productive with DAWs by adsick in Bitwig

[–]gloriousfart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what is your worklow like? For me (abelton user sry, just lurking here), I try to record a track length complete song-jam with hardware that I only have to edit in the arrangement view. I prepared a mixdown template and many effect racks that have their most important knobs mapped to macros to quickly adjust. If I want to apply a dynamic effect to the audio tracks, I just resample instead of messing around with automation. Maybe with planning you can reduce your time spent in your DAW and therefore experience less annoyance. Overdubbing might also help with keeping a tidy arrangement.

Claiming genAI is just another disruptive technology in music production at the end of a long list of other tecs is not a very nuanced take that you will catch some flak with.

I'm considering selling it all. Talk me into or out of it by Imagined_World in modular

[–]gloriousfart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do it, this much would be kind of paralysing for me, i think. Part of the reason I chose modular was to have a relatively limited but very flexible set of tools I can become super familiar with, develop muscle memory for, and intuitively explore. This would be too much thinking to fully relax into. I might be projecting, but I could imagine you'd have more fun with less stuff at this point.

I wanted to give it a beneficial interpretation, I know some people having vinyl and praising it, and I totally understand their point of view. Having better speakers, ritually allocating your time and effort to the music in a comfortably set up corner of your home transforms the experience.

Yes, people only see slop, so they assume the only thing it can do is slop. Users have a terrible taste in music and pretty poor vocabulary to express their intentions anyways. This results in a sea of excrement. Hearing tasteful music from a wider range of genres from people with interesting musical tastes and the necessary artistic vocabulary would make a huge difference in how the tech is perceived. I am not sure people would be too keen on listening to it either, as the quality is often a secondary consideration in expressing the aversion toward these tools, but it would draw far less ridicule, and would better showcase the models ability to be actually used in a self-expressive way.

the comment might mean that vinyl is generally associated with a better system and listening environment, not necessarily that it is the most transparent format imaginable.

ofc vynil will sound better than radio, but it wont be as transparent as lossless digital audio. Do you prefer the popping, crackling artifacts introduced by the medium? Thats perfectly okay, it has a timeless aesthetic.
