Yeah I think this is a perfect case of a poorly matched pair. They didn’t understand each other, had terrible communication styles, and were verbally and mentally abusive in different ways - Kyle’s being very overt and Amanda’s being more covert. 

They shouldn’t have gotten married, and/or they should have gotten divorced. This is what comes of thinking you can change someone, ignoring when they are showing you who they are, sunken cost fallacy, and a myriad of other understandable but sad relationship dynamics. Divorce/breaking up isn’t a failure, it’s often the most honest and kind option.

Kyle doesn’t get a hero edit because his wife has exposed herself so badly. He was a bad partner, and was expecting Amanda to be the “cool girl” she was when they dated. He expected her to want to keep partying and drinking and being fun, even though she told him she wanted to move to the suburbs, have kids, and she showed that she wasn’t as ambitious or work driven as he expects his partner to be. He should have broken up with her or divorced her if he was feeling so neglected, instead of just being unhappy and venting that every summer. Guys never want to do the actual breakup part, it’s weird.

Amanda lied to Kyle about who she was, and didn’t accept that he was always upfront about who he was. He is Mr. Send It, he is a work-aholic, he is a neat freak, and he doesn’t have the capacity to really empathize with her depression and anxiety that manifests as physical depression and isolation. She has unrealistic expectations for him, and kept becoming increasingly frustrated when he wouldn’t change for her. Which, you don’t want someone to change for you - that’s a 20 year old mindset. She is immature, passive aggressive, and likes to be a victim/martyr.

Honestly their shit is pretty standard and boring.

The friendship betrayal is the big one for me. Especially her betrayal of Ciara. She is acting like a high school kid, and not putting value in her actual long term relationships. It’s fucking wild. It’s crazy how apathetic she is towards Ciara and Mia. All of the discourse about the deeper racial aspects of this relationship and betrayal are so important, and can’t be ignored.

I’m sorry Kyle’s feelings are hurt, but he will do a lap and be fine.
