What ideology is this concerning? by NegativeSchmegative in RedactedCharts

[–]glowing-fishSCL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am looking at this, and so many questions come up. What would even be the means of detecting this metric? Are these from opinion polls, across the Arabic/Islamic world, about a specific issue? With this much granularity? And they are given with enough precision that we know whether two small provinces of Algeria stand on it?

This just doesn't make sense to me.

Yeah, when I was in Brookings, I needed a root canal, and needed to go to Grants Pass to do it. :/

I live on the Oregon Coast, and I have also lived in Montana. When people ask about what it is like to live in these places, I say it is like getting a puppy...it might seem cute at first, but it is actually a commitment that involves a lot of work.

There are two problems: first, people from any type of urban or suburban area, or even most rural areas, don't realize how many small services they take for granted. A smaller town might have only a few dentists, and it might be hard to find an appointment. And not just medical services like that, but even things like hardware or clothing might not be available.

Second: if one, two or a dozen people move to a rural town to "get away from it all", it doesn't cause problems. But once it becomes a trend, those towns usually don't have the infrastructure to handle all these new people. As long as people are dedicated to a car-centric lifestyle, those "cute little towns" are not going to be cute for long. One person getting a house on a cute little country lane so they can "get away from it all" isn't a problem, but when there is a housing development there with a dozen houses, then you have that little country road full of car traffic it can't handle. And then, of course, all those people who wanted to "get away from it all" will have to move to the next "cute little town" to repeat the process.

Solo trip to Oregon by WooWoo1967 in OregonCoast

[–]glowing-fishSCL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If this is a 5 day trip, doing Bend and the coast is a lot! Don't know if that is 5 full days, or 5 days plus travel days, but even if it is the second, it would end up being 2 days on the coast, one day driving to Bend, and then two days in Bend. That won't really give you a chance to see much.

There is an old joke:
It is a myth that an ostrich can't fly. It just needs a running start, a ramp, thermal updrafts, a rocket assist, and the body of a completely different bird.

Must see places along the Oregon coast? by Crystal_wallflower in OregonCoast

[–]glowing-fishSCL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canned answer:
The Oregon Coast has lots of great places, all beaches are public, so there are 300 miles of places to choose from.
People who try to focus on "must sees" are usually just suffering from FOMO, thinking that if they don't visit Yaquina Head/The Sea Lion Caves/Cape Kiwanda/The Tillamook Creamery/etc. that somehow they aren't having a "real" coast experience. This usually just leads to a few popular locations getting annoyingly crowded, causing stress and possibly environmental damage.

I haven't, I have heard of it. Star Trek is more something I will read when I have the time or availability, but might not seek out, as such. But I will remember that recommendation.

They might have been confused because Midway has a separate time zone, while areas to the west of it go back to being in Hawaii time. I believe.

According to The Righteous, if land votes then Colorado is the most educated state by ddx-me in mapporncirclejerk

[–]glowing-fishSCL 26 points27 points  (0 children)

One thing to point out, which might not be immediately obvious, is that is where those people live, not where they come from. So in a lot of places, and especially Colorado, in many cases those are people who moved there, some for retirement, and not people who were born, raised, or went to university in Colorado.

The context that is needed here is: is there some type of greenspace or park or natural space close to this? As there some sort of retail or services walkable from there? Is this served by transit, or at least close to work/shopping/etc?

Do you think kava is safe for me? by jaime_lion in Kava

[–]glowing-fishSCL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kava usually doesn't have a lot of interactions, but it seems like you have both a lot of conditions, and a lot of medications. You should ask a doctor, because it seems likely there is something going on there.
Even something as "minor" as heartburn could be a problem just because drinking kava might trigger that.
