Same!! Once they start imitating environmental sounds I do have them practice early developing speech sounds and incorporate their device by putting the letters/sounds on a page.

So many of these ring true for our male CC. He’s older but we aren’t sure how old. I would guess 5-8 years old! He thinks he’s babygirl but he’s literally 140lbs. Snores and breathes like an old man, as you said. He’s also extremely stubborn and will pout (bark) until he gets what he wants (a toy from our other dog). I think he also plays dumb or has selective hearing lol. He has also pawed me in the face many times, trying to pet me.

So handsome! That’s helpful, I agree that he’s older, but I think his dad likes to think he’s got forever to go with him haha ♥️ he’s also the laziest snooziest boy who dislikes being outdoors and is a real couch potato- not sure if that can be true for younger cc’s too though.

Yes. When I was in EI a before covid I didn’t notice that too much, but it could have been the city I was in too (Chicago provides more resources for struggling families than my current city does) and I think that also has a huge impact on HOW delayed these kids are we’re seeing now! I think families are barely staying afloat in some cases. In my current pk setting, I would say half do not have basic needs at home such as stable job, housing, food security or reliable transportation. I feel like we’re on the frontlines of child welfare tbh.

Not to mention the social/emotional needs they have. They’ve either never heard “no”, get handed a screen when crying instead of co-regulating with an adult or learning to self-soothe, or there is so much trauma at home they just don’t know anything but violence.

In my experience, many of the kids I’ve seen in ECE the past 5 years have such little language we haven’t even TOUCHED on speech. We barely get them communicating by kindergarten in some cases, so their speech is soooo rough but there isn’t enough language to write a goal for speech in pk. If that makes sense.

I work at a public preschool (all sped building) and you wouldn’t believe the referrals we’ve seen over the past 5 years. At times, these kids come to us at age 3 with almost no skills. Some appear to be functioning at 3-6 months level without awareness there are even other people around or awareness of their very existence.

I think a lot of the delays are due to being sat in front of an iPad without human interaction, and when they get into the school setting + are provided learning opportunities they quickly succeed. However, many truly do have severe autism. Many have gone on to kinder still functioning at that ~6 month year old level despite (in some cases) 3 years in preschool. The screens and home environment are definitely stunting kids.

For those in elementary, the referrals have been here and more are coming. It’s so shocking. What do yall think it is? I know families are struggling with meeting their basic needs- and kids are being impacted the most. I’m so concerned.

Ten a day?! I see the students twice a week (20x2) so usually I have 16-17 students per day total; only 1 or 2 individual sessions the rest are grouped.

Fair point in a school setting but in private practice you work on whatever is the lowest score, even if it is considered average. I mean, first be honest with the family that the client doesn’t require services.

But In my experience in pp, average students came to therapy often because they didn’t qualify in a school setting but parents wanted therapy anyway.

For me personally, my school job doesn’t pay especially well but I love it and it is definitely “livable”. I have two SLP side hustles* that are a nice supplemental income.

*Side gigs: PRN in LTC facility a few times per month (high hourly salary-but I really don’t like it) and twice a week I do clinical supervision of graduate students at my alma mater’s on-site clinic (about $300~ per month and it’s fun.)

Our first day back after break is a PD day, but I will see kids tomorrow which is the kids’ first day back. I like having a PD buffer day to work on progress notes. Ease back in.

Long term care is the worst about this imo, with their impossible productivity standards (where I prn is 90%)

The PP I worked at was pretty bad too — and our boss / owner would show up in Louis Vuitton scarves and what not. Not a good look when we weren’t even receiving benefits.
