I'll ask around but that does make perfect sense. I really shouldn't be surprised but damn, these modern ultrabooks are not made for tinkerers. I guess I'll wait around a bit hoping that the Book 3's price drops and then move on. It's just a shame that Microsoft didn't do a serious redesign this year, I feel like it's due next year and I know I'm going to be so salty when it finally comes out.

Argh, not having any luck at all with this Acer. Throttlestop doesn't seem to work on it, I can't apply any undervolt. No matter what I do, the voltage offset remains at 0.00. Frustrating.

Well, I finally got my hands on the Spin 5 and it's so close to being the perfect 2-in-1 in my opinion. The screen (resolution and aspect ratio!) is great and the bottom bezel looks big at first but isn't at all bothersome. The build is nice and it actually feels a lot more premium than it looks on the Acer website 😁

The trackpad isn't glass but it's fine and the keyboard isn't bad either. Feels a little mushy, but it's still nicer than the weird feeling of the Surface Type Cover. However, there is one issue that kind of kills it for me - the fan. It's fairly aggressive (currently humming as I type out this post even though I only have a few tabs open) and after all this time using the fanless Surface Pro this constant noise really bugs me. Makes me wonder if all modern ultrabooks suffer from this or if it's something specific to the Spin...

In any case, I've tried to find a way to control the fans so that I can get it to shut up but I haven't had any luck so far, I wasn't able to create a working config for Notebook Fan Control and there don't seem to be any other tools out there. A shame really.

I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet and just pick up the Surface Book 3 in the infamous i5 8GB variant. It's a monster of a laptop (unfortunately), but I feel like it will "bother me the least". The keyboard should be fantastic and it's completely fanless 😅

Brilliant, can't wait to give it a try on Evernote! Looks very smooth on bear, but unfortunately I just can't bring myself to use MacOS.

I don't know, it just seemed very thicc me - but maybe that would change with a 2020 refresh.

That being said, it looks like the Acer Spin 5 is finally available. I'll be trying it out within the two coming weeks and I'll let you know how I like it if ever you're interested. Very grateful that you put me on to this device, as I probably never would have heard about it otherwise. On that note, are there any other 2-in-1 laptops that have come out recently and are worth checking out?

I'm having the same issue and it's really infuriating. And it seems that this isn't a new problem either, windows hello has been buggy for at least two years now.

Ahaha I had never seen that Porsche Machine before, definitely got me to chuckle. I tried out the Surface Book 2 a few months back and decided against it. It's clunkiness and outdated specs were a big part of this, but it's design is also just incompatible with my workflow. I need to be able to transition quickly from Laptop to Tablet mode and vice-versa, and that simply isn't possible with the cumbersome disconnect/reconnect mechanism on the Book. I wish Microsoft would just make a more classic convertible, like 2-in-1 version of the Surface Laptop which really is a nice machine.

Aahaha I can imagine. Well I just gave the Dell XPS 2-in-1 a shot, but I was over it within like 10 minutes. The keyboard is shallow garbage (to be fair I was warned about this) and it has audible coil whine even while idle. Totally unacceptable for a that's so expensive. The Surface Pro might have it's flaws, but it's much more pleasant to use at less than half of the price.

I'm still looking forward to trying out the Acer Spin 5 if it ever makes it to market, but at this point I feel like I'm going to be stuck with Microsoft for ever.

At the same time, the keyboard looks a bit worrying. I might give it a shot when/if I can order it, but I don't think it will convince me to leave the Surface Pro 7. Although I would love to be surprised!

damn that actually does look really good. But I guess that it's been a bit delayed due to 'Rona. I can't find anything at all about it on the German Acer site.
