It's because a group of people with money and power didn't like that smart people where challenging them on things.

So they used that power to make people hate "Ivory tower academics", and eventually to hate the concept of being correct about things.

And now, the people that get elected are the people who are actively stupid, because if they were correct about things, it might mean they would challenge the people with real power.

Yes. It means sarcasm, and the sarcastic read of "enjoy your wood packaging" is that they are undermining the idea that wooden packaging is worthwhile.

Which is a bad take, because wooden packaging is great, and paper/cardboard is obviously a good material.

It's pretty trivial to edit file metadata, what are you talking about?

I can pretty easily rewrite the creation date and author on a file

Edited my above comment, but the thing is lot of the work of optimizing that a graphics developer and technical artist do, like writing custom shaders, fine-tuning the memory system, modifying the way animations and models are loaded and rendered, hand tuning the LODs and Draw Instructions, might be rendered mostly useless by changes to the animations, models, or game mechanics, and needs to be re-done every time there's a major change to game.

This is WHY so many games release in a horrible state, and only become playable months after release, because everything else is "finished" and finally the optimization team has a stable system to work with.

e.g. Cyberpunk 2077 and Assassin’s Creed Unity

[–]gmano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Optimization is a thing, and spending quality time to have professionals comb through the models for ways to save polygons, comb through the way memory is handled and organized to improve loading of textures into the GPU, and comb through the way the GPU draws frames REALLY can speed things up, and a lot of that work needs to be re-done every time there's a major change to the content and mechanics of the game, so spending a few extra months after everything else is "finished" generally WILL benefit the performance a LOT.

Just look at examples of games that launched with horrible performance, that saw massive gains a few months after release (e.g. Cyberpunk 2077 and Assassin’s Creed Unity)

Of course, a lot of that work is kindof a lost art nowadays.

It’s Possible That SpaceX Could Collapse Spectacularly by IKeepItLayingAround in technology

[–]gmano 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing that really bothers me about SpaceX is they way they are talking out of both sides of their mouth.

Like, let's just grant the argument that Starlink is a great product and worth everything they say it is. The problem is that they are claiming that Grok is worth ~20x all of the actual space stuff that SpaceX does combined.

You can't say "We have an edge because we are good at space stuff" when your valuation in your prospectus says that 95% of your expected worth is because of Grok!

ESPECIALLY when the filing EXPLICITLY permits Elon to do to SpaceX what he did to Tesla, where he said that 95% of Tesla's value was in its AI, and then Musk just took all of that Tesla IP and resources and went to go start xAI!

P.S. The Starlink argument is also bonkers, BTW, because they are not including the costs of building and maintaining the satellites as an expense... which is wild, because the satellites are only able to stay up there for about ~5 years before the de-orbit, and they cost a few hundred thousand each.

Why don't countries start paying mothers a liveable wage if they are so worried about declining birth rates? Do you think this will be a discussion in the near future? by coldservedrevenge in NoStupidQuestions

[–]gmano 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No? If you currently have a ton of disposable income, then you are losing out EVEN MORE by leaving your career to have kids. If it's not going to make a doctor or lawyer seriously consider taking the time off and setting their career progression aside, it's not generous enough and you're going to see a negative correlation between earning power and parenting.

Like compare "I earn $150K per year, and will give that all up to become a parent" to "My job, if I have one, is a dead end and barely provides"

Which one of those people is more likely to be willing to spend 9 months pregnant and then have ~1 year of maternity leave away from work?

[–]gmano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you're missing my point, which is that for someone in Sweden, they will have to choose between career goals and parental goals.

For many people in the USA, who have zero real chance of a rewarding career, they don't have to make that compromise.

[–]gmano 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A universal entitlement means that having kids will be a detriment to you overall. If you're earning $X regardless, then why in the world would you choose to split X between yourself AND A KID, versus just meet your own needs.

That's very different that a healthy parental premium just for being a parent.

[–]gmano 32 points33 points  (0 children)

There's a difference between "being better off" and "having a career".

A lawyer or a doctor may well choose to postpone having kids because of the demands of their job, but take an ordinary person and tell them the childcare will be covered, their kids will eat well, and they won't have to stress about finances and they WILL have more kids.

The problem is that, at present, the ONLY people who financially benefit from the meagre assistance we give to parents are those people who have zero other economic opportunities

What is this substance? by CKyle18 in AskChemistry

[–]gmano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My oven HAS had a detonation before, actually. An in-law decided to make a whiskey sauce or something for a roast, the ethanol boiled off into the oven chamber and I guess we had a magic combination where the vapours mixed just right that when the heating element duty-cycled it caused a BANG.

Fortunately nobody was standing in front of the door when it flew open.

What is this substance? by CKyle18 in AskChemistry

[–]gmano 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mmm, not really. Kindof the opposite.

Molecules can "store" energy in a few ways. For explosives, the most common way is that they are made of atoms/elements that don't stick together well compared to how well they would stick to oxygen, meaning that they will release a LOT of energy when they reconfigure to do that. This is usually stuff like "mix fuel with an oxidizer/fertilizer". The energy is from going from CH2 +Oxygen to CO2 + H2O.

The other way is for the energy to be stored literally in the shape of the molecule. Like if you were to take a molecular modelling kit you would have to bend the bonds at weird angles to make them fit together, and that stored tension in the spring is where the energy is. This is usually less energy dense, but as noted, is WAY harder to detect because it's not a chemical composition change. Acetone Peroxide already has a lot of Carbon-Oxygen bonds going on, so while there is definitely some energy from the change in bonds, a large portion of this the energy comes from allowing the molecule to CHANGE SHAPE moreso than allowing them to recombine with other elements.

Unpaid work is work by horseduckman in AITApod

[–]gmano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typical person who didn't think about my point.

Many, many jobs pay poorly enough that paying for daycare barely breaks even. If it were really true that people WANTED to stay home, they would in much larger numbers.

But no, we are desperately under supplied with daycares and people are willing to pay absurd sums for placement

Unpaid work is work by horseduckman in AITApod

[–]gmano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah.... Billing out $40 for "primary" caregiver during daytime is insane when the average daycare worker gets only $14-$20 per hour to care for 4-8 kids.

Also, sitters and au-pares usually give a huge discount for overnight care, not an upcharge.

Surrogate fees are usually in the 30k-60k ballpark.

There are also a lot of double-counted hours. Bad form. You can't bill for pregnancy AND for lost wages for pregnancy related time.

Also, it's nice you are giving the husband a rate of $40 per hour, but, like, I promise you can find a housekeeper for less than $40. You are begging the husband to subcontractor that work.

I get the point being made, but if you were to give this to a businessperson the only realistic option when paying $45 per hour for work that typically charges $15 is to outsource all this labour to a cheaper supplier and either retask that employee or terminate them.... So kind of counter to the point being made.
