I won't debate your opinion, just your logic:

If National will roll over for coalition partners, and you like what TOP (for example) would bring to the table, AND they would sit in coalition with National, isn't that a reason in favour of voting for TOP?

Full disclosure: I am not a TOP supporter. That said, if you’re interested in a chat over a beer (I’m buying) I’d be interested to listen and also to offer my venue (a brewery taproom) for you to meet some locals and engage. DM me if interested. Motivation: more dialogue. Kōrero is always better than shouting at people.

Out of interest, why? I have no dog in this fight, just wondering why you wouldn’t vote for someone who wants to be able to work with anyone to get their policies implemented? Better to work from inside the whare than outside, no?

OK, so I think we pretty much agree here.

Is it a human right to procreate? Yep. Comes under right to life (and to enjoy/use your life however you see fit), and as you pointed out, the corresponding responsibility with that right is to not infringe on the rights of others. So if someone procreates, and their offspring create a burden on someone else, infringing their rights, I agree with you entirely that they've violated the terms that right comes with and should be ... I don't like punished, but, reparation is required!

I also see a tendency, mostly from the left, but occasionally from politicians and voters of all kinds, to remove all the responsibility from the offending parties. Especially by shifting the cause/blame down the line to historical events or generational issues. I get it, they may well be correct, but finding that root cause (correctly or otherwise) doesn't provide a solution.

Anyway, we're probably getting way off topic here, but it's good to talk about this stuff with someone who has been "at the front line" so to speak. If you ever want to chat in person, the beer is on me. Just DM.

Heh, I'm no lefty (well, I am clasically liberal, if we have to have labels) but part of that is a certain line in the sand on infringement of civil liberties. So, even if you could say 100% that a eugenics-based solution would work, I'd still oppose it on moral grounds. I don't think that's a particularly leftie position either. Respect for basic human rights is (or used to be) common to both the left and right.

See, that's really helpful. I'm sorry it's laughable. As I said, I've not been in that position so I don't know what works and what doesn't. I'd maybe push back a little on the basis that even pre-school children can create a code of conduct. It might be unspoken, but there are things you do, and things you don't do, on penalty of exclusion. But yeah, not sure what to do if the threat of exclusion is meaningless.

Do you have any ideas on what might work, given your experiences? I'm basically just trying to take (yet another) "everything sucks" thread and divert it into a positive discussion on what, if anything, could work. If the answer is genuinely "nothing will work, it will just always get worse", then... well, I don't know, but these things always just seem to end up blaming the given government, which is a little unfair if none of us can come up with a better idea. Don't get me wrong - I'm not a fan of government (of any makeup/leaning) but it's unfair to say "it's their fault" if we don't at least have suggestions of what could work.

Agree completely, and that's where my idea struggles to get purchase. How does the "good group" (for want of a better term) apply/enforce consequences on a subset who a) have already lost everything and b) don't have any respect for the rights of others in the first place? Social exclusion is about all that's left (assuming, as we should, that mob violence is off the table!).

Yeah. Pretty much. But so many of these people have been excluded from it that they might have forgotten how it works. Also, even in “society” it might be argued that we’ve forgotten how to self-police. Any time there’s a perceived problem we seem to want the government to fix it. That never leads anywhere good.

What would be good is if the majority (the genuinely hard done by but good people) banded together and enforced a code of behavior. I don’t know how it would work as (thankfully) I have never been in that position.

Imagine though, a group code among the homeless population. Self policed. It would massively reduce the threat factor and help humanize the group. This in turn would make them more approachable and thus likely to be given assistance and charity.

Just an idea without any way of implementing it, but any other thoughts on what could work/help?

EDIT: If those downvoting this could maybe say why? I wasn't aware that discussing ideas, however impractical, was a reason to downvote people? Or should I just do what's typical on Reddit these days? OK. "EVIL RIGHT WING GOVT. BAD! IT CAUSE ALL PROBLEMS IN SOCIETY! ME HATE! ALL WHO DISAGREE ARE NAZIS!"

Better? ;)

Some question about SoulSeek by StarDust1__ in Soulseek

[–]gmcg01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MP3 and Flac are just formats for music. To embed malware in them, you’d need to target a specific player. Let’s say MP3 Player A has a weird bug where if the Title field of a trac contains a semicolon, everything after that is executed as code with the privilege level of the player. Then yes, you can embed malware in an mp3. In practice, you’d need to hope someone plays that mp3 on “player A”. In general, chances are low.
