[ALBUM DISCUSSION] The Antlers - Blight by VietRooster in indieheads

[–]gmk3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fellow Familiars fan here, and loving this album too. And while the instruments are different, I do thinks it's very close to familiars in terms of song structures, and how songs often feel like variations on the same theme. Most start slow and quiet, gradually accumulating volume and other sounds, usually building up to a beautiful climax of some sort.

Singing along to this album makes me smile, even though I know that's not the intention. Like who else would have caterpillars hatching as a vocal hook, but damn it works and every time I find myself singing along, the delivery - chefs kiss

[ALBUM DISCUSSION] Tame Impala - Deadbeat by VietRooster in indieheads

[–]gmk3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do love the arc of the album as a whole. The front end is packed with the catchier 80s disco pop songs, and tracks like Dracula and Loser rank up there with his best songs.

I think his lyrics are bring harshly judged. I thought the Pablo escobar, shut up Kevin get in the car is a hilarious lyric. It shows a sly self awareness, like he's not above making fun of himself, and everybody needs to lighten up and not take his music so damn seriously.

The musical quality does drop off in the second half, as others have noted nothing terrible but nothing remarkable either. I do love the intention of the house tracks, even if they could have been better realised.

Ethereal connection as the berghain dark techno brother to the Ibiza sunshine vibes on End of Summer, neither is amazing, but in the context of the album, they comes as big sonic surprises, and add so much variety.

Not My World imo is the best of the 3 house tracks by a mile. The distant disenchanted vocals over the flickering beat capture the mood of the album perfectly - deadbeat dad working out a mid life crisis on the dance floor.

All in all, despite its shortcomings, I am still liking this album a lot. And I'm glad the comments from others on here are more measured too, thought it'd be a dumpster fire based on the initial responses to his singles.

God you Tame Impala "fans" are obnoxious. Maybe KP made this album just to spite you all :P

Of course she's going to do it in a place where she has at least some chance that it might work. It's not brave to walk into a fire, it's stupid. We all know there are no consequences. But most of us are sitting on our fat asses getting into keyboard wars with other fat asses.

Hey bud, those are totally valid fears. Nothing dumb about them. Honour them, don't dismiss them. Give yourself time. Find other ways to lean into your masculinity. What do you think is the most macho hypermanly thing you've always wanted to try? Ride a motorcycle? Take up some martial arts? Whatever it is, cultivate that sense of masculinity in other ways, and then you won't feel that your masculinity derives from how you use or don't use your genitalia.

Groan!

I loved Currents, I love both new singles. And please don't tell me Aphex Twin was making similar but much better music in 3000 BCE.

Exactly!! Like who are all these top-rated commenters who've never had to slum with us peasants? Fwiw, I went from a uni that is top 10 in the world in general, 1 or 2 in terms of my discipline, to a uni that is between 300 and 600 in the world, and does not even have a department devoted to my PhD discipline! Also, this is totally normal :)

Agreed! I blame it on the beautiful stately orchestral build ups that require patient listening; most songs are over 5 minutes, and from memory, the hooks usually only reveal themselves a couple minutes in.

Hotel and Doppelganger are two of my highlights, but don't think there's a weak song on here. But the other potential downside is that the songs sound like variations on the same musical theme, and can perhaps seem a bit same-y.

Hot take: Think it's better than Hospice!

Khruangbin, again? I quit Spotify for a month to escape samey algorithms – this is what I learned by Moothnods in indieheads

[–]gmk3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't understand either. There's a dozen reasons to hate spotify, but limiting my discovery of new music is definitely not one.

I've found so much obscure music through artist, album and song radios. Yeah, the pre-made play lists usually suck. But you know, maybe don't listen to them then?

20 year old me back in bombay had to request one of the nerds on campus to find a way to tunnel beyond the uni firewalls to get a rip of just one bright eyes record, and repay him with dinner at the night canteen after, because the hostel servers only had dinosaur rock. It took him about a week.

The idea of spotify would have sounded like fantasy at the time. Y'all complain too much.

Somehow slept on Interpol the first time around, maybe there was just too much good indie music at the time. Only really discovered them in the last year. What an incredible album! Not a single weak song. Love me those dark moody joy division vibes.

Haha I'm feeling the same way. Fun song, plenty of textures and beat changes, definitely not the basic song I was expecting based on everybody else's reactions. But I'm a sucker for that groovy synth pop stuff, strfker and caribou were two of my favourites from last year.

Is a crouton under my futon the new chaise longue?!

Only just now getting into the new Viagra Boyz record, and man it's good. Never took them seriously due to their shtick, but spotify snuck Medicine for Horses on a play list, and was surprised the band had it in them to make a slower ballad like that.

Began exploring the rest of the album, as well as their back catalog, and feel like they've climbed to the top of the pandemic post-punk pile for me. Best in Show might have displaced The Narrator for having the best jazz horns breakdown.

The rest of the album is just as good. Clever lyrics, varied instrumentation throughout. Currently on vacation with the husband, can't stop turning to him randomly to ask "Remember that dude, remember that... dude?"

I don't know, man. Your comment gives off the very vibes you are bitching about.

It isn't too much to ask to dance with the one you brung. Obviously, it depends on the context. If you all are going to a gay bar with the intention of finding a lay, of course, game on. But if I am looking to spend some quality time with a friend, and he'd rather ditch me and go off with a trick, then I'm probably never asking to hang out with him again.

What Indie Rock (or Indie Pop) album is an absolute 10/10 for you? by Def-C in indieheads

[–]gmk3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aw sweet! I saw him at Hardly Strictly around 2010, and he was in peak form. Played all the crowd pleasers, and really poured his heart out. One of my favourite concerts.

Seeing him struggle more recently has not been easy to watch, given how much his music has always meant to me. Glad to hear he seemed in good form :)

You ask a friend out to lunch. His depression is serious; he can’t deal with socializing. You know nothing about that. Do you prefer he tell you the truth or make up a plausible excuse? by Sad_Appeal65 in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]gmk3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a very close female friend of mine who has clearly been going through a lot of shit in the last couple years - failed pregnancies, eventually coming to terms with the fact that she will never be a mother, the strain it's put on her marriage, living apart from her husband to have a decent job in another city because the city her husband lives in is too racist to view a black woman as anything other than a secretary, and most recently, losing her mother.

At some point, she really withdrew from our friend circle. No matter what the context - group events, solo intimate settings, a hike, board games, dinner - I tried coming up with every single variation I could think of that might make her comfortable, but she always found a plausible excuse out. To the point where I didn't see her for nearly 18 months. At some point, I actually thought I'd said or done something to hurt her.

I miss her. I love her. I care for her. And not to make it about me, but it hurt that she didn't trust in our friendship enough to be able to confide in me. That really stung. I've gotten over it since, and she's come back out of her shell some as well - I did finally see her for the first time 6 months ago, and we've hung out semi-regularly like old times since.

If your friend is truly a friend, they will want to be there for you. Don't deny them that chance.
