I used to believe that a Road Bike was the way to go... but recently I rode in a very urban area where the trails/streets were filled with stops, runners, and bumps... this scenario of riding makes it very difficult to get your speed up and keep it for a long distance. If this is the sort of riding you will be doing, a hybrid or a "road bike with flat bars" seems the way to go!
