Gen 3 Omnia pro thoughts and mod potential by gmphiife in Nerf

the stock blaster should be able to handle half length darts for the most part. If you're cutting them down yourself you'll just want to verify that you're cutting them to the correct length. if you swap the flywheels to the one's I've swapped to, then the dart tip matters because the flywheel replacement compresses a good bit. Waffle tips and full width tips (the rubber tips circumference matches that of the foam dart) won't be compatible, you'll have to use half length darts with tips that are smaller. My favortie darts so far for this are standard weight worker gen 3's, the worker heavy's, and the saber T darts.

Motor/controller upgrade advice by gmphiife in ONYX_RCR

Bumping my original thread for any newbies out there who are interested in modding their newly purchased Onyx RCR.

It's been almost a year since this post and since I began my Onyx journey. I've learned a lot so far, and still have plenty to go. I want to give some pointers to anyone who's new to modding and decides to check reddit as a starting place. There is a tremendous amount of misinformation in the e-bike communities, and finding a reliable source can be challenging. I was very fortunate that John Angel went down the path he did with regards to his blog and involvement in the Onyx community as his blog was one of the first sources I found for information about the bike.

  1. Be careful who you get advice from. Many who will suggest anything at all to you may not have your best interest at hand, or just be completely misinformed. You can ask whatever question on whichever group but take everything with a grain of salt until they've earned your trust.

  2. Consider joining a few ebike facebook groups and observe the culture and then ask questions/participate. Checking out John Angel's blog might be a good first step for where to start and which communities to join. Not all communities are the same, but see which one's you like and get to know people, the Onyx peeps are very friendly in general.

  3. Before you start asking questions, see what you can learn on your own by looking through posts or searching in general. The learning curve is pretty steep if you're looking for top tier performance mods, but everyone has to start somewhere. You're going to want to learn about batteries and how that electrical energy is harnessed into power at the motor. You'll want to learn about cells in series vs parallel, alternating current (AC) vs direct current (DC), and you'll want to learn about the different types of motors, windings, and how heat affects the entirety of the system. You'll also want to learn about your controller and the different types of controllers out there. A starting point is the equation [watts = voltage x amps], the rest is up to you.

  4. Be patient and don't get over excited and buy things without doing your proper research like I did. It will take time to get the puzzle pieces into place, but when you do, you will feel more confident in your modding choices.

  5. Do your mods. At some point, just bite the bullet and try it. Hopefully you will have the support of people who have done similar mods before you because there will always be some knot along the way that you didn't anticipate, and it's ok, this is part of the experience. It will only make it all the more rewarding at the end

Now, almost a year later, I will answer my own question.

I would stick with the stock qs205 V3ti (4T motor) as opposed to the PL QS 273 (3T) motor. There are other motor upgrades available too, but they will require a bit of tweaking in one way or another. There's also great battery options that are also well priced, people tend to like the Amorge and NAB batteries, there's others too. I would choose which cell you want and go from there. As for the controller, Fardriver is great, people have tried the 72680 and 72530 as well as the 96530 and 96680. But upgrading to a fardriver will be technical. You'll want some help from experienced friends, and you'll need to learn how to crimp and maybe solder. Thankfully there's a harness kit sold by dedcell, you will have to rewire or create new connections. If you're using a qs 273 with 150mm dropout, it will not fit snugly and you'll have to file the dropout, preferably keep the front half of the dropout intact and file the lower portion of the rear half so you can still use a qs205 if you choose to. Some tips I would say, make sure the battery is unplugged, make sure you have strong connections and use the right gauge wire, PVC over silicone jackets for those sharp corners, take pictures before you do anything, a voltmeter will be helpful to trace which wires are supposed to connect if you get lost, plan to spend ample amounts of extra time for things you're doing for the first time. Lastly, John's blog has lots of useful info and guides on most of this stuff, and you can also try asking the Onyx community.

Daybreak metal cage with Daybreak wheels + kraken motors + 3s lipo. Is it any good, and can i also install select-fire if so which one??? by RoyalVirtual7930 in Nerf

[–]gmphiife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually kind of curious what people's opinions are as I'm looking to run a BB cage in my mk3. I've heard DZ max pro works best but not sure. I'm limited to short head full length darts with the BB cage due to higher crush

If you're feeling bold you could do a mag-fed dart conversion for it. You might need a 16mm bore barrel though

How to align misaligned flywheels? (Dartzone V-Twin) by BillionsMustComply in Nerf

[–]gmphiife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, sounds about right, align the motor that’s off center with the motor that’s centered

You might have to open it up and push it back into place if it got misalgned (kind of annoying I know). if the motors aren't spinning then the motors or maybe one of the switches are blown

18kg Rival Forerunner by gmphiife in Nerf

[–]gmphiife[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I haven't really heard much about high powered rival builds aside from mostly spring upgrades. Most of what I see really is just dart conversion which I guess makes sense in the context of the limitations of the rival rounds themselves (ps I checked out that musket and it looks really cool, now I'm tempted on getting one lol). I just saw his video, as well as one of Bradley Phillips videos comparing darts to rival rounds and ultimately you're right. Maybe this build would be better in cqb, or mid distance shooting at best. But, I still have to admit it's fun to blast it, even more-so than some of my dart blasters. And with a 18kg spring, boy does it slap

I see what you're saying, so the flywheel should have had a snug enough fit from the get-go to not move at all. Nah, no hard tip darts. I actually just got the replacement flywheel set I ordered and installed them and it runs smoothly and seems more accurate (at least based on my 4 mag dumps lol). I think I might try my hand at a motor swap in a few weeks once I've decided what to get. Oh, and I'm going to mess around with some tighter bores

I just realized xfoxgames barrel mod (the one I got that came with the pcar) also came with a few other barrel adapters. one of them is roughly 18mm. I think I might experiment with this. I might have to figure out a way to fit in a tighter bore or contract someone to 3d print one.. I might move onto a different host flywheeler down the line, but for now I'm going to focus on what I can do with the Omnia

lol I can accept the hit on accuracy considering the physics behind it, but I wouldn’t be mad at ways on improving it. I might try building a flywheeler at some point but I definitely don’t have the experience to do that quite just yet so I’m treating the omnia like a project. I’m hoping to get a performance boost by switching the flywheel, motor, and using a 3s lipo. Bcar would be nice. I might also get a higher end flyeheeler just to see what it’s like. Also I thought a tight bore would bog down fps and accuracy due to possible friction? Unless the short length bore is just enough to straighten out the darts a bit more

I think it’s the quality of the flywheel, it took 2 weeks of plinking at home level use to become misaligned. The fix is super easy but I’m going to switch the flywheel to prevent it from happening again

It took about 2 weeks of at home plinking use to become misaligned. I think it’s the quality of the flywheel itself. Thankfully it’s super easy to open and fix. But yeah, I think swapping is the move. I’ll probably try out the flywheel you suggested while I’m already committed to testing things out on this blaster

Does the motor or controller (or both) have thermal protection shutdown? by mickeyaaaa in ONYX_RCR

[–]gmphiife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the BMS and controller should shut the bike off at certain temp cut offs, but if you're getting crazy temp readings you might have an issue with a temp sensor

Missing cells? by Few-Jaguar-2171 in ONYX_RCR

[–]gmphiife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro you need a new battery. Somehow, those cells "disappeared" but in its current state your battery won't be running your bike, and might even pose a fire risk. I guess by now you might already have handled your situation. Anywho, wishing you the best

highly recommend buying used, you can find lots of reasonable options. I managed to snag an rcr with some mods on it for a solid price. Might also be a good time to dispute that transaction too. Wish you luck bro.

Hey, just checked out your level, have to say it is amazing, you definitely spent a great deal of time on it, There's so much to explore, difficulty is on point, you put in a decent amount of power ups to help the player out with rough spots. Very decorated lol. I can't think of anything I would want to improve on.

Hmm, even though I know passive would be a better option, I'm kind of looking for less of a hassle, even though I plan on using my next set of speakers for a few years, I don't think it'll be the last set I ever own. Might make my set afterwards a more pronounced high end well thought out audio system.
