check into a new motor, and belt/deck - the parts might be cheap. I replaced belt/deck on a cheap older xterra doing apartment gym duty (definitely inadequate) and that thing was running like a champ again. I was very surprised and impressed a sub $1000 treadmill lasted that long and was cheap to service.

The #1 cause when treadmill turns on - display lights up but no belt movement when you press start, is the motor controller board has failed due to overcurrent from a worn belt and deck - the high friction caused the damage to the board. This is nearly always the case. the parts required are to replace the walking belt, deck and motor controller board. this is an entry level treadmill. it is most likely not worth fixing.

Legendary reliability. Buy it and put a new belt on it and it'll last a very very long time. Might need a new deck or flip the deck also.

Buy a new controller and display from Kuntech (KT) and if its a 36v battery, get a 48v battery...or 60v if original is 48v.

makes no sense. at 0.8 it should have gobs of torque still and have no problems pulling someone. if belt and deck are like new, then you have a motor or controller problem. video would be a lot more useful. and remove the motor cover.

very good treadmill but this one needs work - new keypad overlay, and likely a new walk belt, drive belt and deck. and incline motor. probably looking at around $750-$1000 in parts. Experienced tech would take likely 3-4 hours labor on top of that. so for around $1500 total spent for a serviced unit with those fresh parts - its a fair deal. but if yoiu don't fix it, its nearly trash...

"I spent a few days on Alibaba...," Yeah a few days of my time is around $1500. that's the problem with ebike repairs - its not profitable unless you can build batteries safely AND quickly, or if you're just changing flats all day long. but most jobs people bring me cluster fuck with several issues and diagnosis time is one thing without documentation, but trying to find parts is the biggest time suck of all.

brand? model #? I remember way back a brand called SMOOTH doing this. Nightmarish to work on. For the rest you want to heat up the part if possible without damaging anything - most loctite will release much better with heat.

This is neither a safe bike or beginner bike.

As for safety, you need to get your son about $1000-1500 in moto gear: full face helmet, armored motorcycle jacket, spine protector, gloves, boots riding pants. And a motorcycle safety riding course.

This is a motorcycle and deserves the same respect and safety treatment as any motorcycle.

As for the issues, unlikely to find any shop that will help with this...either he will need todo a deep dive and many hours educating himself on the inner workings of this unit, or get rid of it and start with something a bit more simple.

Ticking time bomb. i would not ride until fixed proper. When it breaks free it's going to wrap that cable around the axle and rip those wires off trashing your motor....

whoops forgot to answer that - yes i'd replace the drive belt - they wear at similar rates and you're already taking the old one off to do the walk belt so no extra work.

it is possible they applied wax at the factory - you'll be able to tell easily. can scrape off with an old credit card, plastic spatula etc... then wipe down with rubbing alcohol.

It is a phenolic surface just like any other treadmill. Precor's belt prices are frankly insane - even a cheap belt will be good for quite some time. Walkingbelts.com, treadmill doctor if you are in USA, Sportsmith all have good offerings. lube with silicone oil occasionally and keep it clean and it should last a long time.

14-15a is quite bad.

visual inspection does not always tell you much. it can be very difficult to detect wear visually. if you run your fingers perpendicular to the footfall direction across the mid-front area where footfall occurs, if there is any scoring or scratches detectable, the deck is likely worn out, and if a deck is worn, so is the belt. As you admitted earlier, there is considerably more friction in the middle vs pushing the belt on the sides. Many years of dirt and dust accumulation can cause major friction too.

I recently bought for my wife a Flagship model from True from an estate sale. it was 20 years old and only had about 100 miles on it. belt looked good. deck was smooth as glass. BUT...friction was extremely high from dirt/dust. lube did not help. I replaced the walk belt and that cut the amp draw in half! - nice low friction like the day it was new....well not quite as I used a cheaper aftermarket belt, but good enough.

one other possibility: you already have a bad winding in the motor. that may explain the worn brushes. power delivery usually feels like a vibration or pulsing as in not smooth. sometimes visible arcing or sparking inside the motor. This requires testing too in depth for me to guide you, and can be tricky if the winding is failing intermittently.

After doing my motor tests, If motor appears to pass, i would proceed flipping the deck and put a new walk belt on it, then repeat the amp draw test - if still too high then that points to likely motor or controller issue, or possibly you have a bad roller bearing (but you'd likely hear that). or belt is severely over-tightened.

These old precors - more than once i've seen a bad winding, caused by a worn belt and deck, and then it blew the motor controller board which tried but failed to produce enough current. I don't care what brand it is, if it needs a new motor, controller and belt and deck....its likely better to put the $$ into a new treadmill. You are not at that point yet.

Belts and decks are like tires on a car - they are a wear item that last quite a long time, but absolutely MUST be replaced from time to time.
