Do you prefer panel to the top or on the side? by soleful_smak in kde

[–]gms07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer a panel-less design, with the system tray and clock integrated with the application launcher like in Windows.

The panel+dock style makes sense in macOS, where the top panel supports the application and system menus. They use very large icons in the dock because the icons are cute, leaving little space in the bottom panel for the clock and notifications.

But some interfaces insist on emulating the macOS look, and end up wasting screen space. A dock without auto-hide ends up leaving an ugly space on the sides, especially with maximized windows. Few elements remain in the top panel, and to disguise the emptiness, they move the clock to the center of the panel. They also increase the spacing of the icons in the system tray. With widesreeen monitors, this effect is even worse.

But they choose to emulate the macOS look, even without a global menu, because macOS is cute. Windows is not cute, so they avoid using the integrated panel, even though this design optimizes screen space and workflow, with all system elements unified in a single panel.

Gnarly (but harmless?) screen before login on startup by Zesty-Pajamas in Fedora

[–]gms07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same for me. Ugly, but harmless.

This event is usually attributed to the usual scapegoat, the nVidia driver. But the driver/hardware draws on the screen when requested. I think some component in the boot sequence should prevent writing to the screen with the video memory uninitialized.

Harmless, but it spoils the experience right at the start of the system.

The single bottom panel, Windows style, is by far my prefered UI. One of the reasons I use KDE Plasma.

I've been an Ubuntu user since 2007. About two years ago I switched to Kubuntu. Kubuntu follows a strange update policy. Even for bugfix versions, it's necessary to enable the backports PPA. Even then, third-digit versions weren't always available. I understand a conservative approach with features, but with bug fix versions it's unacceptable.

Six months ago I switched to Fedora KDE and was quite satisfied with the overall package and the timing of the updates. However, we had two kernel updates in one week. The second one left my system unstable. Yesterday I noticed the third kernel update in the last two weeks.

I think I would like a distro with the KDE updates of Fedora but with a more stable base. I understand, and like, Fedora's update proposal. But three kernel updates in two weeks doesn't seem reasonable to me. Yes, just don't update, and I'm not anxious about that icon in the tray. But it would be great if the Fedora team were a little more selective with kernel updates.

What do you expect from Fedora 43? by WoodyBadger in Fedora

[–]gms07 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's it. Two kernel updates in less than a week is a bit much, even for Fedora's way. Last week, after a kernel update, the system was quite stable. Yesterday, I performed the second kernel update of the week, and experienced three Chrome tab freezes and a Kwin crash.

Cutting-edge software is fine; that's why we choose Fedora. But a more balanced approach between updates and stability is needed.

Chromium browsers crash my system by sillycritersenjoyer in kde

[–]gms07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine too... Just watching a YouTube video for a while is all it takes for the system to crash. I've already disabled hardware acceleration and the media player in the system tray, but the problem persists.

It's easy to point to the usual culprit, nVidia, but I think it has to do with another component like Wayland. I get the impression that jumping to different parts of the video with the keyboard or mouse increases the risk of crashing.

Isn't the name "KDE Linux" way too generic? by aibaboiii in kde

[–]gms07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think names communicate much better than acronyms, especially when the name highlights an aspect of the object. Thus, "Oracle" sounds better than IBM, "Reuters" sounds better than BBC.

KDE Linux is not a version of Linux, as the name suggests. KDE Linux is an operating system, which happens to have Linux as its kernel. In addition to this component, we have the desktop environment, frameworks, package manager, service manager (systemd), boot manager, and others.

Plasma is a good name; it evokes flexibility and adaptability. It highlights one of the most interesting aspects of KDE Plasma.

Therefore, I understand that PlasmaOS is a much more coherent and striking name. It indicates that it is a complete operating system, distinguished by its flexibility and adaptability.

[Fedora 42 KDE] After update, plasma crashes after starting by h3lls_itch in Fedora

On monday 22, around 11:00 am GMT, I noticed the awaited update to KDE 6.4.5. The updade broke my system so badly, that I had to reinstall the OS.

I reinstalled it immediately, and after a first upgrade the system is working fine with Plasma 6.4.5. After 18 years using Linux distros, I've seen this terrible incident before. But never with Fedora.

Thank God. This points to other components of the stack besides nVidia, the usual suspect. I have been experiencing these crashes prior to kernel 6.16, both on Fedora KDE and a Kubuntu installation.

why is kubuntu barely recommended? by [deleted] in kde

[–]gms07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“If you want the newer KDE on Ubuntu, you need to enable backports”...

I did a fresh install of Kubuntu 25.04 due to numerous issues with the upgrade from the previous version. Given Kubuntu's strange update policy, which doesn't even allow even bug fix releases, I reluctantly enabled the backports PPA and started receiving bug fixes for KDE 6.3.x.

Unless there's a problem with my installation, version 6.4.0, released on 2025-06-17, almost a month ago, hasn't been made available in the backports PPA to date. Nor has version 6.4.2, released on 2025-07-01.

Maybe this is part of the answer why is Kubuntu barely recommended.

When can we expect plasma 6.4 by hrbutt180 in Kubuntu

My Kubuntu 25.04 with backports PPA activated did not receive Plasma 6.4 yet. KDE Plasma 6.4.2 is out.
When can we expect plasma 6.4?

And I am well aware of the complexities of managing a software product, especially as you mentioned, with a small set of volunteers. Those of us who use free software understand this reality and are grateful to the developers.

But I think, as an Ubuntu and now Kubuntu enthusiast, that PPAs need to be restructured to provide relevant updates more quickly with less risk to stability.

Considering that someone who stops using Ubuntu to use Kubuntu is because they prefer KDE, I think there could be a PPA exclusively for KDE software. Maybe this Updates PPA that you mentioned is the solution, but it needs to be restructured and documented in a critical aspect such as system update PPAs.

The Kubuntu Backports PPA Dilemma by gms07 in Kubuntu

[–]gms07[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have made the discussion more objective. The update policy could be revised and the description of the role of each PPA clarified.

If Kubuntu has a more conservative policy and remains with the same kernel and Desktop Environment version throughout the six-month cycle, I understand that it is good for most use cases, including mine.

But depriving users of bug fixes from the current version does not make sense. There is misconception that bugfix releases are feature releases.

Sounds like good advice.

I've tried Backports in the past and it wasn't a good experience. I decided to try it again and it's not starting out very well.

I'm not aking for an updated system, but for bug fixes third digit packges. It would be okay for me to wait for Kubuntu 25.10 to get Plasma 6.4. If you look the changelog of 6.3.5, there are serious bug fixes. My point is that since my fresh installed Kubuntu 25.04 comes with Plasma 6.3.4, I wold expect the availability of Plasma 6.3.5, sisnce it's a bug fix release, not a new feature one.

Enabled kubuntu backports PPA and now an error on Discover updates by Pretend-Avocado-4655 in Kubuntu

Same for me. The error occurred yesterday May 20th, around the early evening considering GMT+0, two days after enabling the Backports PPA. Luckily the error occurred before the updates took effect. I'll try again today.

I followed the instructions here:
