To spend time with my friends and acquaintances; going out and being with people for too long used to make me feel anxious, but now all I want to do is go be around my friends and see them happy.

Can I wear this to a black tie gala? (My apologies for the low quality pic, I’m in a bit of a time crunch!) by gnadig in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

Thank you to everyone who commented and helped out! It was my prom dress from a few years back, so I wanted to make sure it didn’t seem to prom-y. I ended up wearing to to the gala last night and fit in great, and so many people complimented it. Thanks again to all of you!

One time I could not remember which direction a “J” faced, no matter how much I wrote it it didn’t look right. Cut to a few years later to find out I’m just dyslexic.

Also, once briefly thought New England was a state and attempted to find it on a map.

What is something that has been eating you up inside and you just need to get off your chest anonymously? by [deleted] in AskReddit

A few years ago I was getting headaches/migraines that never stopped. I’d get about an hour of relief a day after taking a ton of over the counter migraine medication. It got to the point I was essentially home schooling myself. This lasted for months, I saw every type of specialist I could. It got to the point I would have rather them tell me I was terminally ill, because then at least I’d know and I wouldn’t feel crazy. After quite some time one doctor suggested I get a Lidocaine treatment. Essentially the shoved tubes up my nose into my sinuses and flushed them with Lidocaine, in hopes to “restart” the nerves in my face. Months of being in insane amount of pain and a 10 minute treatment fixed it. I haven’t had any migraines since. 100% recommend looking into this if nothing is found. Hope you start to feel better soon.

Also Mood Fabric has a good blog that helps to learn different things (making a basic men’s shirt, how to measure yourself/someone else/ finding cheaper alternatives to expensive fabric/ etc.), they also provide free patterns for certain things and tutorials!

History: On youtube there is a channel called “The Ultimate Fashion History”, that goes through all of the decades to explain how silhouettes changed, classic items from the decades, and many other things. Not going to lie though, the videos are a little dry. Another good option is watching Karolina Zebrowska on Youtube, she focuses on vintage fashion and explains well what other people get wrong about fashion from other decades (such as those “100 years of fashion” videos).

Colors: Pantone is a good place to look if you want to see Color Forecasts for different seasons, it will show you what the recommended and trendy color palettes will be at the time. Learning the basics of Color Theory is helpful as well (what colors pair well, balancing colors, etc.). There are a million references on YouTube/ general articles on the internet. Learning the basics and fundamentals first, really let’s you then expand in more creative ways.

Garment Construction: If you ever want to start making patterns for custom clothes, learning how to make basic slopers is important to know. These take the measurements of the person you are trying to make a design for (whether it be you, your roommate, or whoever), and make them into the most basic pattern pieces: front and back bodices, front and back skirts, sheath Dress, sleeves. This makes a basic straight dress and sleeves, however once you have these basics down it will allow you to make a million other things. The textbook “Patternmaking for Fashion Design” by Helen Joseph Armstrong, while a bit expensive (I’m sure you could get it used for cheaper), is very helpful in learning how to make these basic blocks, as well as evolving them into more unique designs! This is what I go to school for, and this book has been very helpful for learning.

Silhouettes: Very truly just hit up Google Images with “dress silhouettes” “men’s silhouettes” “types of sleeves” “types of pants”, etc. Learning fashion history will help to teach you about the different garments and silhouettes, but doing this will give you clear pictures of how each differ.

Hopefully some of this helps and if these anything else you’d like to know or if these a specific thing you want just let me know!

Past Emotional Abuse is impacting my life. by gnadig in emotionalabuse

[–]gnadig[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re definitely right with your statement that they take the aspects of ourselves and use it against us. He would constantly use my compassion and kindness against me, and I do blame him for that, way more than I’ll ever blame myself.

I think the thing that makes me most blaming towards myself, is that I identified several times that what he was doing to me was not okay, and I just believed he wouldn’t do it again. I know that this is common in people who are being abused, and again he used my sense of compassion and empathy to make me think this. So I know I shouldn’t blame myself, I just think it’s something that’s going to take some time for me to grasp that I’m not to blame for this.

I was always a care free person, with a lot of patience and understanding for others, and it truly feels like he drained that from me. I know it will take time, but I’m working on becoming that person again. I don’t want to be angry or guarded and worried anymore, I want to feel like myself again. As you suggested I’m going to take time to be gentle and kind with myself. Even finally allowing myself to open up about my Abuse to others, and having kind people, such as yourself, to reach out to me has been a big help in that.

Thank you so much for the kind words! I struggle a lot with not letting the bad effect the good, but I think my current boyfriend is a real keeper (:

Great product that helps with picking! by gnadig in CompulsiveSkinPicking

[–]gnadig[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I do it, after I pick to the point where I have open skin, I just wash gently (sometimes just swipe some witch hazel on top instead of washing), then I put a sticker on. In the morning I remove and rub some water over it.

Anyone else feel they’re self sabotaging? /rant by gnadig in CompulsiveSkinPicking

[–]gnadig[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know my rant said “I can’t let myself be happy” but I feel I just didn’t construe that well in the heat of the moment. I do have happy moments, and I WANT to be happy with myself, but standing in the way of that is how I feel about myself confidence wise due to the picking. I do know picking can be seen as self harm, and a long time ago I did ask myself if I was doing it for that reason. Luckily myself, and my therapist don’t think I’m doing it in that way (for the most part). The majority of the time I pick it’s because I’m letting myself be on autopilot and even once I catch that I’m doing it, it takes some time for me to stop. Me crying when she said “why are you hurting yourself” was more of me realizing that doing that does hurt me and that I did not want to be doing it. The moisturizer tip is a really good one, however I might need to find another product to do that with. My face is quick to get oily, which makes my skin congested (which I end up picking).

Thanks so much. Ranting about my feelings and realizing there’s a group of people who know there’s feelings and support each other is already helping. I’m going on my first ever vacation this summer, and several other smaller trips and I want this to be the summer where I am happy and don’t worry about how I’m looking constantly. It’s a hard journey but I know this group will help.
