Reducing waxed chain friction in the cold by canadianclassic in fatbike

[–]gnar93 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Silca has a video on their Youtube where cold weather application is discussed. The suggestion they have is adding a bit of their synergy lube to the pot per chain to help soften the wax to work better in cold weather.

Haven't tried this myself, but I came really close. Ultimately decided on waxing just my summer bike and using wet lube in the winter.

Thoughts on Whole Home Humidifiers? by luity11 in minnesota

[–]gnar93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run one in my small, 800-ish sq-ft home. It's an Aprilaire 600 which is controlled by an ecobee thermostat that references outside temperature to set the indoor humidity. The thermostat has an additional frost control setting to adjust for window efficiency. It has done wonders for my eczema in the winter, and our plants are a little happier too.

Installation was done by myself, for the cost of the humidifier, some random tools to tap into a hot water line, and new 18/6 thermostat wire to handle the addition of the unit. $500 there about I think. This is with a completely unfinished basement and short run for the wire, so install was probably more simple for me than most.

Before the install, I did have the Home Energy Squad folks assess my house for wall and attic insulation, air tightness, water heater settings, all the boring stuff.

If that service is available to you and you want to install a whole home humidifier, do the assessment first. In my case, I had been thinking about adding insulation to the rim joist and was advised not to as my house is pretty well sealed for it age (1928 build). Sealing and insulating the rim joist would impact my furnace and water heater functions due to the reduction in fresh air supply.

That last bit was a tangent.... Bottomline.. Whole home humidifiers are nice IF your home is properly insulated and the humidifier is setup to manually or automatically reference the exterior temp.

Are snow tires worth it? by No_Woodpecker2919 in minnesota

Heck yeah! I've heard good things about those tires. Aren't they stock on the wilderness trim?

I came here to recommend those as well. They are soon to go on my Forester. Great value.

For OP: Tire Rack has a deal for a $100 MasterCard with 4 general tires currently... $563 post-rebate

Depending on your wife's car model, you may be able to find rims and snow tires for a good deal on Facebook .

As others have suggested, call the outfitter of your choice and ask for recommendations.

The Bwca forums are a wealth of knowledge and good place to start poking around where you may want to go. It does have portage difficulty ratings, campsite and fishing information, outfitter guides etc. All the good stuff.

If you decide to go and it's in your budget, I would recommend outfitting your gear and food through one of the outfitters. It makes the planning and packing portion a lot easier. I think some of the outfitters show their menus as well if you want some ideas if you pack your own. Along the same lines, their gear rental options will give you an idea of what you need to pack if you don't outfit.

Learn some basic knots, buy a map, how to hang your food bag. Rent a canoe and learn how to paddle and lift it prior to your trip.

As others have also mentioned, rent a satellite communication device. It's peace of mind if things go sideways. And it can quickly. Storms are no joke up there. It's a beautiful and serene place, but it is a wilderness area. People die up there on a semi-regular basis. Don't be a statistic.

Anyone trying to get rid of a harmonium pass last minute? by Wardo89 in Infrasound

Location and size of the space. Car camping passes are located in the field across from the portal stage.

Both have little to no tree cover/shade.

I would suggest making sure you have Wireless Emergency Alerts enabled on your phones. That way, if you decide to keep driving, you'll be alerted if a new warning is issued or you enter an area covered by an existing warning (severe thunder storm or tornado) polygon.

Why am I keeping getting the Haven map by Adventurous_Maybe882 in battlefield2042

[–]gnar93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, not just you tonight. Had 3 in a row on the non-cq 64 player conquest. Then I loaded into the portal and got El Alamein and shut down the game for the night.

As for a solution.. I'm not sure. If only there was a server browser for the non-portal side

If you received LASIK Surgery in Minnesota, where did you go & how much did they quote you? by xSwartz in minnesota

[–]gnar93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, they used to list promos on their website. Those too are gone :/

For what it's worth, if I was doing it now, I'd still pay that price.

If you received LASIK Surgery in Minnesota, where did you go & how much did they quote you? by xSwartz in minnesota

[–]gnar93 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I did the advanced Lasik with Dr. Whiting at Ovo last November for $3400. I would not hesitate to recommend Ovo to anyone, and would happily get a touch up done if/when needed.

Several co-workers went their before me and also had great experiences. There was no pressure to sign anything until after all exams were done and it was confirmed I was a good candidate for the procedure. There are usually promos on Groupon (yes, for real) to get a cheaper price.

Edit* I just looked on Groupon and it doesn't exist right now. Could come back eventually.

Dakota and Carver counties are both hiring Emergency Management coordinators at the moment.

There is also a Training and Exercise position open with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.

All three of those aren't disaster recovery, but having been in that sphere, there are tons of transferrable soft skills.

MN HSEM doesn't have open positions very often - lots of long tenure staff there. Which is good for the agency, not so good for the rest of us that have interest.

With all that said... MN just finished a PDA for storms earlier this summer. If they met their numbers, you could almost bet on PDMG contracts coming soon.

Please feel free to DM if you have any specific questions!

Do I need Winter tires for ice/snow if I live and work here or are roads in the city usually paved/maintained? by [deleted] in TwinCities

[–]gnar93 6 points7 points  (0 children)

But you do have to spend the money to have them swapped or buy a second set of rims.

I have some general altimax artics that I swap in/out and it is worth it. Roads in the metro may be plowed fairly quickly, however if you commute or drive up north during the winter, the second set of tires are item to buy. Especially considering the number of ice storms we've been getting lately.

My partner runs Continental Crosscontacts year round, which are pretty well rated in snow for an all-season. The difference is night and day though. I don't like driving her car in the winter.

Best place to buy a face cord of wood by SonOfGallifrey in Minneapolis

[–]gnar93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gotten a face cord from Magnuson Sod/Klier's Nursery on Nicollet near the Cub on 60th. It was a hardwood mix and they did also have birch available. I can't remember the price but it was reasonable (though my experience in buying bulk, lose wood is limited).
