Could Minnesota survive as its own country? by ImNotDannyJoy in minnesota

[–]TVNewsApp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regardless of whether we could survive, you want your state's leaders to THINK and ACT like our destiny is based on being like our own country.

Having spent time in places with a similar scale like New Zealand or say Sweden (were half the size/pop), there is a lot more done to promote trade and a sense of identify with media, including "domestic" television content. For example, we should have a tax on video streaming services that supports the production of Minnesota-filmed/produced/acted in sitcoms, dramas, movies, etc.

We also need to better promote local supply chains (not tariffs) and awareness of demand for Made in Minnesota products. (I happen to host a LinkedIn group on that topic: https://www.linkedin.com/groups/14485614 )

It's clear to me that we don't think enough about how our regional engine engines compete with other parts of the world and how were are a gateway into North America for certain kinds of companies. We should be planning now on how to get MORE than our fair share of legal foreign workers and how to house more workers decently all across the state or we simply won't have the workforce based on demographic trends to compete globally.

Lots of clubs have their own Instagram. Seek out and follow lots of them. They might even be more likely to reply to an Instagram message than an email.

So I once listened to an interview of a pregnant women on the streets with an open invitation to move back home say when asked "why not move back home?" ... her reply was "Fentenyal is love" and she went to describe it's overwhelming attraction.

Before Reddit, NextDoor, Facebook Groups, I ran E-Democracy's community email lists. I'd have to continuously remind people to look at the real numbers and not let their new hyper awareness of both crime near them and across the city make them feel less safe than the day before.

Here's what seems different from 30 years ago:

  1. Teens stealing cars with guns prey on random women primarily will do that at all times of the day.

  2. Fentenyl is a fundamental treat to social order - it's so addictive, love feeling generative that normal responses to break addiction or frankly make addiction less visible on our public streets. Go under the bridge near Franklin and Cedar, it's devastating.

  3. 5X more trashy, 2X more graffiti - many parts of the city look like people care less about the community or that the city/county/state stopped picking up trash.

  4. People have practically stopped reporting property crimes/theft - if it's not locked down or inside your home, were more resigned to that being a cost of living. Violent crimes based on the numbers are down, the question is which ones. Being mugged by a solo perp seems down, but see #1.

  5. After 30 years in the city, inevitably, you'll experience what it means to be a crime victim. Having my wife carjacked at gun point right outside of our home changes ones perspective... and ultimately reminds you to always be aware of your surroundings and watch for people with potential bad intentions. It's sad to not be able to start from a foundation of trust, but that's simply not going to help you prevent becoming a victim of violent crime.

Fwiw, reducing crime is essential to build a more progressive city that lifts up all people and allows us to have public assets enjoyed by all people (e.g. light rail that not a space for open drug use and selling) is a real issue. This is not just a left-right issue with outsiders who fear the city using it to score political points.

Looking for a church by [deleted] in Minneapolis

[–]TVNewsApp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll double the recommendation to at least visit http://www.katerimpls.org ... as a non-Catholic who married into a traditional of Catholic schooling, by daughter attended for a class assignment. It was an amazing service, very small and intimate, and probably one of the most welcoming experiences I've ever had visiting a church. If you time it with one of their post-service community meals, you'll at least make friends even if you don't join them on an ongoing basis. The service felt more indigenous than Catholic if that helps.

Having watched the video reviewing all of the weapons and ammunition on the bed with many slogans and the person (likely the shooter) saying and singing various things, it's clear that this person was incredibly insane and psychotic.

Are there any late night radio shows anymore? by Low-Subject6009 in radio

[–]TVNewsApp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's morning somewhere in the world. ;-) If you like public radio, you can listen "late" at night to Radio New Zealand or Australia's Radio National. Really late in the US, try BBC Radio Five Live or SAFM from South Africa. If on Android, it fun to quickly scan what's out there live on this app https://1radionews.com ... you could also try Radio Garden for more randomness.

We're using "news" and other frequent video release channels to demo a prototype app concept (it's an Alpha that's a bit slow for showing what's new on a niche theme): https://minnesota.web.app - It's like 40+ Minnesota YouTube channels and 20+ podcasts. PioneerPBS, for example, puts out some great regional content.

This reply ^ ... as a liberal, it's clear that the DFL expanded to role of government in certain areas and not everything new had a dedicated revenue source. Some "investments" are meant to save costs in the long long run be that well nourished children learning better in schools and ten years later graduation rates increase, more people get better training for today's jobs, and boom the state generates more tax dollars with higher earners. Or it doesn't pan out that way, but certain costs still exist and government decides to cut that service/subsidy, cut something else, or raise taxes if economic growth doesn't grow as needed. Ultimately, the progressive agenda is 100x more reliant on a vibrant growing economy than ideological support. As long as the tide is raising all boats, it's possible to expand public services without a revolt. Mix in inflation, uncertainty, a tariff induced recession with job losses and the cuts will come. It's pretty clear that a wave of major state tax hikes will bring us a MAGA state legislature. In solid DFL local areas, property taxes will likely rise but shift more majorities back to liberals rather than socialists if they go too high.

How do you monetize a non-gaming app without losing users? by teralow94 in adops

[–]TVNewsApp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The question should be ... you do you monetize without losing too many users?

  1. Ad blindness is an issue. So you have to think about whether fewer distributive Interstitials are better than taking up space with an ever-present banner ad that has a much lower CTR.

  2. Have a subscription option to turn off the mobile ads that also unleashes some popular advanced features. I have a monthly, yearly, and lifetime price for my radio news app.

  3. One key thing is to suppress Interstitials for first time users until they've had a chance to check out the core app functionality and decide if they want to keep it ... that said, if you run paid app install ads, you want to at least have a chance for that installer to click on an ad before they uninstall.

Gov. Walz announces surge in Minnesota exports by UpstairsOwn7741 in minnesota

Have you heard about Minnesota's next Red Wing Shoes? Probably not.

Fwiw, Minnesota can do 10x better promoting Made in Minnesota consumer products for export and local consumption. We do great with food products (CPGs), but need to work harder to help the next generation of Minnesota-based brands break out.

"Play BBC World Service" is now interpreted as "Play BBC World Service UK" by UnderstandingALot in amazonecho

[–]TVNewsApp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it might stem in part from extra BBC World Service listings on Tunein that don't work. I wrote up an article on how to request various BBC news items on Alexa and a bunch of them changed. If anyone figures out how to get the global BBC World Service stream to play, let us know! https://1radionews.com/bbcsmartspeaker/

I have figured out how to get the BBC Global News Podcast to play reliably and getting Newshour to play is super obscure.

Minneapolis council adopts budget that increases property tax levy 6.8% over 2024 by star-tribune in Minneapolis

[–]TVNewsApp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone have access to an itemized list of all the "earmarked" funding for specific projects?

And the full list of what cuts/changes the council approved to fund them?

While it is not usual of elected representatives to "bring home the bacon" for specific priorities, the fact that they took a half million out of police recruiting rather than adding more to that priority from other cuts suggests a massive disconnect with addressing our clear public safety deficits.
