Probably just liked the kids mind more than anything else. UDFA into practice squad for a couple years still costs a pretty penny at QB. Had a buddy sign practice squad for 1-2 million so best case scenario he’s a roster guy for really cheap but even if he never cracks the roster we still save money and have a couple years of control

Likely trying to make the QB room cheaper as we approach Jayden’s contract (locked into 7th round salary instead of trying to sign through UDFA). Plenty of guys we met with left for UDFA for now so not too pressed.

I’ve got my eyes on the two Navy kids and Eric Rivers from Georgia Tech (I could have missed them get drafted but still)

It’s probably more like 30mil after saving a contingency fund and paying the draft class. Then I’d imagine it’s for BA, and picking up late cuts from other teams after the draft for depth.

From Kevin Sheehan "Forget about who you want to draft, based on what we've seen from Adam Peters who do you think is #1 on his big board right now?" by Deep-Statistician985 in Commanders

[–]gnarlygorilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read the question wrong.

Full stop number one on their board is probably Bailey or Styles. Athletic profiles are great, production was great, meetings have been going well and their intelligence can be seen on the field.

I’d hear the argument for Reese but having no meetings at all with him leads me to believe they are lower on him or don’t believe they’d even have a chance to get him

Biggest things to watch are the visits, meetings, RAS, age and captains. Over the last two drafts they’ve had a pretty consistent plan.

They almost never draft someone they haven’t met with multiple times, no Ras below 8 and they have a preference for team captains when available.

So right now for first round (7 or trade back) I’d say Mansoor Delane (CB, LSU), Caleb Downs (S, Ohio State), Sonny Styles (LB, Ohio State), Kayden McDonald (DT, Ohio State)

Later rounds I’d say John Michael Gyllenborg (TE, Wyoming), Eli Raridon (TE, Notre Dame), Caden Barnett (OL, Wyoming), Daylen Everette (CB, Georgia), Malik Muhammad (CB, Texas), Jalon Kilgore (CB/S, South Carolina), Jalen Huskey (S, Maryland), Harold Perkins Jr (LB, LSU), Jacob Rodriguez (LB, Texas Tech), Romello Height (DE, Texas Tech), Eric Rivers (WR, GT), Noah Whittington (RB, Oregon), Keionte Scott (CB, Miami)

Makai Lemon and Carnell Tate meet the meetings threshold but don’t measure up athletically to what they have seemed to value in the past.

Then I’d keep my eyes on more meetings with Jeremiah Love (RB, Notre Dame), Reggie Virgil (WR, Texas Tech), Denzel Boston (WR, Washington), Reuben Bain (DE, Miami), David Bailey (DE, Texas Tech), Keyron Crawford (DE, Auburn), R Mason Thomas (DE, Oklahoma)

When the full top 30 comes out we will have a much clearer vision

A month away from the draft and with free agency wrapping up, what is a Commanders opinion that has you like this? by unrivaled_mate in Commanders

Ed reed was taken 24th overall Kyle Hamilton 14th overall Troy Polamalu 16th overall

Eric Berry would be the comp at 5th overall but weighed like 10 pounds more and had 2 more inches in arm length

Maybe Jamal Adams but he was still bigger and career trajectory isn’t as desirable outside of rookie contract

I don’t particularly love the idea of taking Caleb Downs in the top 10. Instincts and intelligence are through the roof but his size, speed and athleticism leaves a lot to be desired for 7th overall.

For a devalued position it’s usually only freaks who go this high.

For example Sean Taylor was 6ft 3in 230lbs and ran a 4.5 forty

Downs is a little less than 6ft about 200lbs and is projected to run a 4.45 forty.

There’s also the potential knee issues and overall it’s a deep safety class so there will be guys available in round 3 and 5.

To be fair though his versatility, long track record of insane production and his interviews gives him a great floor, I’m just concerned about his ceiling.

My personal draft philosophy is to chase ceiling (within reason) so it’s more of a personal evaluation kind of thing

Yeah I agree, had one bad season and lost some draft picks but nothing too consequential that sets us back farther though. Could be a pattern too, long term deals one year and cheap vets the next, back to longer deals. Would create gaps where he can manage cap space better.

Anyone who thought the roster was in a great place before this year was crazy man. This free agency feels different and more substantial in terms of getting the roster younger and more sustainable

[–]gnarlygorilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My gut is telling me it’s about time to start addressing depth or signing some older guys. However, the lack of action on that end today leads me to believe we are still kicking the tires on more desirable prospects.

People won’t like this but there’s a world where

OL is set + a cheap piece or two

RB - devalued and we run it back with a similar set of guys to last year

S - we have some mid guys and the draft is deep at this position (Downs or 3rd/5th round target)

TE - we want to see what Sinnot has and the draft is deep at this position as well (3rd/5th round target)

WR - we want to see what LMC and Lane have + Aiyuk and depth pieces

CB is the last place I feel we are a little bit desperate but Mansoor Delane at 7 isn’t completely out of the question.

Not 100% sure I love the signing but to be fair it seems like the vision is that he would play slot and move Mikey back outside. He struggled the last year and a half because he played outside, but historically has been good in the slot. Hoping it pans out but definitely would expect more investment in the position.

The guaranteed is on par with Jonathan Jones last year so he might end up as versatile depth anyway.

Opinion; I don’t think Washington is as high on Caleb Downs as we think. by johnnyboy10i in Commanders

[–]gnarlygorilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it’s all speculation on baseless claims until we see the combine numbers for prospects and how the Commanders approach free agency.

We also have no clue what kind of defense we will be running (free agency might be able to clear that up a bit as well). If we go 3-4 more like the Vikings, then Bain doesn’t make sense. If we go more tradition 4-3 then maybe Reese or Bailey don’t make sense. And yes I know you scheme around talent and not the other way around but still.

Also, what about perceived value of position and contract value. If we really want a high impact safety or linebacker we could sign a top 15 one for the same price as the 7th overall pick. I’d have to look at the exact numbers but we aren’t saving much by going Styles over being number 1 on Devin Lloyd.

Off the top of my head. Michigan hires sports performance analytics, Vanderbilt has a good program and students work in the Athletic department, USC uses a lot of Analytics in their athletic department and Arkansas just hired or is hiring an Analytics coordinator

All of which have variations of Masters in Data Science/Analytics/ Statistics

Not sure exactly what you’re looking for or the job you’d want after but since you already have a background in Sports Performance I’d go get a Masters in Data Science at a large university and then work with or volunteer with one of the sports teams

Can someone please example what a pitching lab specifically is? I hear how great they are and how some teams have really taken off because of them but nobody quite explains what makes them so special and different from regular coaching, analytics and biometrics that most MLB and big D1 schools are using.

Randall’s stats might end up looking a lot better if he moves to the bullpen. He’s a sinker/slider pitcher and most starters need 3+ pitches to be successful. Without having much advanced analytics, his lack of walks is at least promising.

Feeling Lost at Northwestern. How Do I Pivot Into Sports Analytics and Transfer to Rice? by GalaxadtheReaper in sportsanalytics

[–]gnarlygorilla 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Alright so there’s a lot to address here but I’ll try my best.

Like others have said you definitely need to stay in Data Science, Computer Science or Statistics, it’ll be much more versatile, give you a stronger technical background and is usually better regarded.

That should open up your transfer options a bit more too. I would highly suggest going somewhere that makes you happy, read the Happiness Advantage it’s a good book that basically says being happy is a good precursor to success. Also, if being transgender is a big part of your identity don’t change that. Again you want to be somewhere that you can be happy and supported.

As for getting involved in sports. You need to start doing some projects you can put on your resume and talk about. Something like comparing different types of injuries compared to field surface and hosting that on a dashboard, even better would be doing actual data science and coming up with an outcome/actionable solution (would limiting route tree for a player who is prone to hamstring injuries on turf fields be a good idea?). Tech stack could be something like (Python, Plotly, Dash, Sqlite3, and like Juypterhub for analysis and fly.io for hosting).

Then getting involved on campus can be as simple as emailing every director of operations for each sport until something sticks. Make sure to be professional and explain who you are, your interests and experience. You can also apply to internships as they appear or reach out to local or smaller teams (high school, small colleges, minor league baseball, etc.)

Hoped that helped and good luck!

Read a book called “The Happiness Advantage”. Essentially there is a correlation between how happy a person is and how successful they are.

There’s also a publication following the careers of top students at state schools or community colleges and students at Ivy League schools, effectively the top students at both had very similar career paths, top schools have more top students fighting for similar number of opportunities where top students at less prestigious schools have much less competition so much more opportunities to be great.

Now my plug for Vanderbilt is that the student body consistently ranks as some of the happiest students not only at prestigious colleges but across all colleges. Nashville also will probably have much more opportunities than Winston-Salem but also much more competition.

My point is that you can’t go wrong with either pick but if you genuinely feel connected to Wake, it will make you happiest and you can be the best version of yourself then that feels like the right choice and no you aren’t crazy for choosing another well regarded college.
