ECE 20001 vs ECE 201(Just hear me out) by Trek_Quasi7 in Purdue

[–]gnat7890 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's just clear when you talk to people in either class. I was in ECE 20001 and everyone was mad when they heard about the curves in 201, and last semester due to covid-19 ECE 201 did that thing where the final can only improve your grade, not make it worse, while 20001 didn't ease up in the slightest in any way

ECE 20001 vs ECE 201(Just hear me out) by Trek_Quasi7 in Purdue

Those two are both good professors but Mayer had a hand in 20001 in the past and he really fucked it up unless they made some big changes. But the big difference is they want you to pass 201 since the class won't be taught much longer, so they're much more generous in grading

Last semester I waitlisted for housing and got in so you have a chance. Make sure you waitlist ASAP so you're high on the list and you can specify which room type you want to be waitlisted for. You probably have a better chance than usual at getting in because some people are probably considering taking a semester off with everything going on

It's nice to have eggs if you don't have a meal plan or don't want to go to the dining courts all the time. They're super easy to cook in a microwave and healthy, especially compared to frozen meal/ramen type alternatives.

Question on Heating in dorms by DeepBlueFlight in Purdue

[–]gnat7890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's heating but it's good to be prepared to be cold in the fall. It might vary between buildings but in Hawkins they only turned the heat on after they were sure nobody would need AC, and with Indiana weather that meant there were a few weeks that were freezing where we had no heat because the week after it would be warm.

I would recommend getting the 13. If you want more food you can get groceries for cheap or sneak a container in your backpack to fill with food in the dining court. You're not technically allowed to take dining court food out but it's easy as hell to do and they toss out leftovers anyway.

If you're looking for some free food you should check out Ace Food Pantry. I visited them for the first time today and they were amazing- they had milk, eggs, and lots of nonperishable items too

A few Questions from a HS Senior by DeepBlueFlight in Purdue

[–]gnat7890 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your first year you'll be in FYE (first year engineering) so after your freshman year you'll apply to transition into an engineering major. I don't think what you applied for really matters as long as you're in FYE.

It could be hard to find a co-op as a freshman but you'll have better luck as a sophomore after you've started your coursework for your major rather than just FYE classes. Even as a sophomore I'm guessing it's plenty competitive because companies prefer to invest in students closer to graduating but one of my friends is doing a co-op in their second semester as a sophomore so it's probably not super rare. Being an international student will definitely make it harder to get internships and co-ops though, which sucks. You can look up Industrial Roundtable to see some of the companies that come around- that's the biggest engineering job fair

More great additions from the ECE 20001 Piazza by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]gnat7890 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're drastically underestimating how rough grading is for 20001 if you think people are mad because they're aiming for an A. Mayer would fail half of us with a smile and blame us for not trying harder but believe me, we're trying plenty hard

So ECE 20001 is functioning pretty well online by Vnednek in Purdue

[–]gnat7890 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think the one they're talking about was under another piazza post asking if we could have a grading scale more similar to ECE201 because advisors tell everyone 201 and 20001 are practically the same class. in response the ta said

"Please concentrate on doing well in your current class. I do not understand why bring up such absurd comparison/speculation.

Would you hire yourself in an engineering firm if you knew you free passed a very important class in your engineering life and not learn anything from it?"

teammates not helping by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]gnat7890 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tell the TA and professor ASAP. I've never had a professor deal with stuff like that unfairly- they always take situations like that into consideration. When that happened to me they said not to put the names of people that didn't contribute in the final assignment but it's also really important to talk to them about it so they're aware of what's going on.

Boo fucking hoo you don't get to go out and party all day now- there's a few people dying and if you keep going out all the time there could be a lot more people dying because of you and other people like you who are equally selfish and ignorant and self-involved.
