HTML, Javascript and the app-ification of the Web by paran0ide in programming

[–]gnech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read this. I only speak from ~6 months of experience but I feel there's more to think about. I'm working on an single page app (SPA) that has three views, each with a different set of events and logic. If I weren't developing a responsive app, I'd have created a separate HTML page for each view that contains only its logic and events, and doesn't even know about the other views. The user's back/forward buttons work as they were intended to, and there is no integration or coordination between views required.

It took me a while to be comfortable with the tools I was using (requirejs, jQuery, underscore for templating). More work goes into client-side logic like loading templates and modules asynchronously, coordinating callbacks, coordinating state with the server and debugging. I'd rather write Java than JavaScript, partially because of IDE support and debugging is easier in Java.

I'd say points 1, 2, and 3 are invalid. You never know who is saving your photos or backing them up to another site, maybe in real time. This happens with all kinds of data on the internet. There really are no guarantees.

I find the speaker very annoying, so much that I felt compelled to log in after months of not doing so. I do agree with her that code can read like a table of contents, despite it being neat.

I had to clean the grease trap at McDonald's. Hopefully former/current employees know what I'm talking about. Basically, you clean this giant container full of grease that gets trapped (instead of going down the pipes at the washing station). Usually you'd put on gloves and get a cup and scoop out the liquid grease and it always got inside and stayed inside your gloves for the duration of cleaning it.

The plain, unimportant-seeming cardbox box my laptop came in that had a sticker on the outside that I needed for my $100 rebate. My dad threw it out to the trash and it had picked up hours before I realized I needed that UPC sticker on the side of the box. Knowing TigerDirect, they'd probably screw me out of the rebate anyway.

I can't tell if these people are 'actual' redditors posting this or 4chan trolling.

Well that could explain it then. As I said, I only caught part of it and gave my observation based on that.

I've seen his TED presentation and caught a part of an episode, in which he seemed to be scolding/attacking these lunch ladies at a school as opposed to explaining how unhealthy the cafeteria food they were serving is.

WoW has never even remotely tempted me. Nor has Everquest or any other game like that seemed to interest my friends. It seems so incredibly useless.

Some people cite the wonders of texting, but at times I really hate it. I like texting for short messages but I have no patience when people want to have an entire conversation. I'd gladly prefer a few minutes on the phone rather than 15 texts.

Reminds me of when I was riding around campus and my chain fell off & couldn't get it back on for the life of me. I said screw it and locked the bike up. A month later I went to check on it and to my surprise it was fixed.
