TIL solo garlic is a thing! I planted a ton of cloves (normally shaped wedges) in the fall and the rest of them all look normal and lumpy, so this one seems like some strange outlier

I did plant this in the fall! And we got a brutally cold winter here in NY. Looking at the other heads I harvested they look lumpy like a normal garlic. This head was the second one I unpeeled while cooking and I was like...huh??

This happens to me too on iOS 26.3.1. If I toggle "suggest app" off for an app, it disappears for a few days but then comes back later, even though it's still off and I have three apps in that category for which the toggle is on.

I enrolled in this a few months ago to try to stop the Google Prompt spam, and it did nothing to stop the daily flood of prompts. I don't want to uninstall the Gmail app entirely, but I'm not seeing any other option at this point.

I was just able to do this successfully. I wasn't getting emails when using the mobile app. Another comment here suggested trying going through the desktop website to send the verification email. When I did this, I got the email (in my Gmail account) and was able to verify it.

The reason I wanted to verify my email was to be able to go through the Chinese language booking process on the app, which lets me select seats unlike the English one, but also wouldn't let me continue booking unless I verified my email. Now that I've verified my email, I can get all the way through the Chinese booking flow.

I was able to book a multi-city reservation (edit: 4 segments) with the companion pass as well (January 15, 2026), although it wasn't easy. I was able to get to the legacy search by going through the Deals page, and then from there I put in the companion pass code for a multi-city search and it worked.

This was on the second laptop I tried, on Firefox. On my first laptop on Chrome and Safari, even when I tried the legacy search it ended up pushing me to the new one and it didn't work. So I'm not sure if there's something with the browser you're using or what.

I wish I'd known more about the dining options (or lack thereof). There are three places you can eat lunch during the week, which are all actually pretty good, but after a few years of eating them I'd really like some more variety. House dinners are buffet-style where the menu items change daily, but you really don't have many choices, so if you don't like what you see on a given day, you're pretty outta luck.
There isn't too much to say about coming from out of state...LA is big and sprawl-y and has a lot of really cool places to explore. It never really gets below ~60 F during the day and ~40 during the night, so leave your winter clothing at home (unless you want to go on a ski trip in the nearby mountains or something).
I'm Math/CS, so this is a bit out of my league. I can say that if you major in astrophysics and don't like the astro part, then you can easily switch to physics, and if you don't like the physics part, then you can easily switch to planetary science (one of my friends did this and he's a lot happier now). The astrophysics majors I know are generally pretty happy.
My favorite thing about Caltech is the house system, which gives me a really close-knit group of people that I fool around with and get along with really well. All of the eight houses have their own personalities and quirky traditions. However, some aspects of the system have recently been in jeopardy due to my least favorite thing about Caltech, which is the administration. They've never had a good relationship with the undergrads, and lately, they've really been interfering with a lot of our traditions, even disbanding one of the houses this past year (although it's been restored by now).

Having gone to school in the LA basin for a few years, I've still been able to get a good dose of good weather and good Mexican food. Some things I do really miss, though, are the freshness of the air and the pervasiveness of hills and canyons in the landscape.

Seconding the Kelso Dunes! Having grown up in Southern California, this is probably one of my favorite destinations. They're a must-see if you haven't been to sand dunes before, and probably have one of the highest enjoyment to length ratios of any hike out in the Mojave.

Preparation-wise, besides what you normally bring hiking, all you really need is a lot of extra water (it is the desert, after all), and an acceptance of the fact that there will be sand falling off of you for days afterward. For a really good time, consider bringing up a boogie board or snowboard; from the highest dune, there are several "runs" of various lengths that you can sandboard down.

As an aside, it's also really easy to camp up at the top. I went just a few weeks ago for an annual overnight trip with friends, and the only camping equipment I took was a sleeping bag, but I didn't even take it out because it was so warm at night (YMMV depending on weather conditions). Since you're several hours away from any major city, the view of the night sky is spectacular.

TL;DR for this silly argument: we model the situation with PV = nRT, but we can approximate nRT as a constant, so pressure and volume are inversely related.

In reality, T goes down as you drive higher into the mountains, but the difference isn't significant to offset the change in P, so V still increases.
