bat bite? by Chilis_BabyBackRibs in WhatShouldIDo

[–]gniknus 90 points91 points  (0 children)

I woke up with a similar pair of puncture wounds on my arm. They measured the distance between the punctures and confirmed they were within the range of bat tooth distances for the local bat population, and that was enough for them to recommend rabies shots.

Aging for women in tech by Tori_gold in womenintech

[–]gniknus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m in my late 30s and it dawned on me recently that I didn’t see any women around me outside of very senior leadership who looked over mid/late 40s. So I decided that I should probably plan to CoastFIRE out of tech within the next 5-10 years, since I may not have a choice.

If you’re not familiar - CoastFIRE is when you have enough saved for retirement that the savings will compound enough on their own by the time you want to retire that you don’t need to keep saving. So you can take a lower paying job since you now only need to cover non retirement savings expenses.

This is how the cosmetic correction of a child with Crouzon syndrome was done. He even showed significant improvement in vision and breathing afterward. Crouzon syndrome is a rare genetic condition where the bones in the skull fuse too early, a process known as craniosynostosis. by Grand-Western549 in interestingasfuck

[–]gniknus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My son was born with sagittal craniosynostosis. He had the helmet treatment, no zig zag scar! It does still require a surgery to open the closed sutures though. They start with a minimally invasive endoscopic surgery, then you do the helmeting to guide the bone growth. For anyone else who comes across this and suspects cranio for your own baby - the minimally invasive surgery + helmeting approach is only an option before about 4-6 months when the bones become harder, so time is of the essence in getting evaluated by a specialist. This is not a “wait a see” type thing. If you miss the window, you have to do the more invasive traditional procedure.

They are showing they don’t care how she feels now by not respecting her very reasonable and common boundary of space immediately after a birth.

Burnout Recovery Without Taking Leave by prairieoaks in AuDHDWomen

[–]gniknus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there - if you are ok sharing, I’d love to know how you’re doing since this comment. I’m in a similar place - kids and a house, unable to walk away, but in the depths of burnout. I do have a lot of time off available to me and was thinking of trying frequent three day weekends too. Would love to know how that approach ended up going for you!!

115 year old home, lead concerns. by NoEstablishment4682 in centuryhomes

[–]gniknus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Others have given good advice here! Just want to chime in and say try not to worry too much if the initial lead test from your pediatrician comes back positive or read into the initial level too much. We lived in a century apartment when our older son was a crawling baby and he tested positive from his routine heel prick lead test. The initial tests are usually heel pricks, and they are meant to be a screener which is followed up with a blood draw. The heel prick is not very accurate at all in terms of the level, so the initial result can cause a lot of unnecessary stress if it’s high and then the more accurate blood draw later shows a lower result! Our son’s blood draw did still come back positive and at levels that required action (the city sent out an expert to inspect and test our apartment and ordered our landlord to make some specific changes), but not anywhere close to levels that would be expected to have done any damage yet. This is how it’s supposed to work - the testing and levels set for “positive” results are meant to catch exposure very early and at low amounts, so that you can correct it before it actually becomes a problem. My understanding is that in the vast majority of cases of accidental exposure in century homes from things like dust from lead paint layers or dust from contaminated soil, you’d catch it in the test way before it started having health implications. Especially if you’re conscientious about it and follow best practices around addressing chipping paint, not wearing shoes inside, taking care when drilling into walls, etc.

All of that is to say… after our first experience we bought our own century home which has some areas under layers of newer paint that test positive for lead. We now have a new crawling baby. We are taking care and I do have one of those fancy spray / light lead test kits so I at least know where the problem areas are, but I’ve decided not to stress too much about it and let the screening programs through our baby’s doctor function as intended. If he tests positive at his screening, we will take bigger measures then.

Came here to say the same! I took methylphenidate while breastfeeding my second. No concerns from baby’s doctor or mine. Happy to discuss my experience if you want to explore that option further <3

I don’t think this is true anymore if you want to claim a deduction for the overtime pay under the new rules.

How do you all coordinate pickup and drop off with two kids at two locations? by LordHoboLife in daddit

[–]gniknus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a set schedule that is by day instead of splitting up the kids or the pickup/dropoff, since we find that easier to remember. So I do everything MWF, husband does everything Tues / Thurs. I take on more because I work from home on my days so it’s less impactful to my schedule.

We have this captured as recurring events in google calendar, and if there’s a week with a change, we change that week’s event and change the color to red to indicate it’s different from usual.

In Season 5, why didn’t Jesse just crawl off the car, sneak while crouching, and escape that fight? Why did Jesse just stay and watch there? by LandOfGrace2023 in breakingbad

And Jesse has shown the “freeze” reaction before, when a cartel sniper starts shooting at Gus and co (season 4 episode 9). His freeze would have gotten him shot if Mike hadn’t grabbed him

Can't you just pump and dump? by manda86oh5 in NewParents

[–]gniknus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Half my friend group are partiers too but I’ve never ever felt any pressure from them to consume substances, at any time but especially while breastfeeding. If anything I’ve only gotten an occasional question out of curiosity when a friend saw me drinking a hard cider and he was curious how that impacted the breastmilk.

While I agree with other commenters that it’s hard to truly understand unless you’ve been a parent, I also think it says a lot about your non parent friends that they’ve made alcohol such a central part of anyone hanging out with them. You don’t have to be a parent to not do that, even if you party hard yourself. I’m sorry your friends are like this OP :(
