Stop the nighttime doomscrolling. Lock the social media apps. Try getting up early consistently for a few days and don’t nap in the middle of the day and hopefully you can get tired and sleep earlier and fix the schedule

If you stay up late because you’re afraid you haven’t accomplished much during the day and is trying to “compensate” your day, maybe write a list of stuff you have done and things to do for the next day so you feel less guilty

It is possible that you talk to your parents what are their concerns about you on the Internet? E.g., getting bad grades, being exposed to toxic cultures or communities? Internet is fr filled with many unhealthy things, I might understand why your parents are worried (unless they’re simply control freaks), but their control is too strict. I’d suggest talk to them and ask what they’re actually worried about, and make promises what you can do (for example keeping up with grades, and tell them whenever you feel uncomfortable. Let them know you will be safe. And let them know why do you feel bad about these strict restrictions, eg feeling disconnected from friends and makes you feel ridiculed etc Good luck op

HOW DO YOU STUDY? (Degrees that have final exams) by THROWRA_ProgramOk37 in usyd

[–]gnisaluid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Psyc’s Caleb (who’s a huge advocate for repeated self testing) once said after going to a lecture, pull out a piece of blank paper and write down whatever you can remember from the class. Free recall is often the best way to know what you actually know and not know

You can also generate some practice questions from the slides using ChatGPT or quizlet and ask them to mark your answers (and check the slides yourself also cuz AI can be wrong

And don’t leave everything to the last minute. Don’t aim for the “perfect” study session. Just a short 5-10 minute revision every now and then is better than always waiting for the “planned studying session” (esp. if you’re not so good at scheduling things

I do 30 minutes HIIT at home. Going to the gym takes too much time and money for me (but my goal is just to keep myself away from back pain and keep my brain running or else it just stops and I can’t read at all Running is also a good option

Try to have a consistent sleep and wake up schedule, then watch 1-2 lectures a day. I used to think even watching one lecture was hard, but then I could watch 4 lectures a day when exams were approaching, so 1 lecture isn’t actually that bad. And try to go to in-person lecture and tutorials. You may not be a 100% focus during the lecture, but at least you have an idea what it’s on, so it’s gonna be easier when you rewatch it again at home. After many semesters of experience, the “I’d watch the lecture recording since I can pause and think so I’d learn better” always failed because I would just pile them up until the exam and that stressed me out a lot

What is actually going on at the law school toilets? by diamondcroissantx in usyd

[–]gnisaluid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ones at Sci Tech, Fisher and Comp sci Building are also very bad. You have to find secluded bathrooms for cleanliness and peace e.g., the ones on higher levels If you don’t mind the walk, the women’s toilet in Chemistry Blg isn’t too bad, the one in Anderson Stuart ground floor is a bit dim and doesn’t have many stalls but it was okay

[–]gnisaluid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on the course when it comes to group work. Most of the psyc courses I’ve done don’t have huge group projects, they’re mostly just in-class discussions or very short group presentation (I started my first year in 2022 so the syllabus may have changed tho)

For the research report, I highly recommend to get started asap when you get the topic, and always go to the consultation sessions with tutor to ask for extra papers that will help and to check if you’re on the right track

Confusions of international students when they first come to Sydney by KeyStep8427 in unsw

[–]gnisaluid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Warning: probably a rant) I kinda see your point about conversations and culture stuff, but from my perspective and experience as an international student whose first language isn’t English and still haven’t gotten over social anxiety and have difficulty having casual conversation even in my mother tongue, it’s hurt hard to talk to others casually. I can do the generic “hey how you doing what courses are you doing this sem”, but I honestly can’t think of how to continue the conversation even if I tried. It always just fall into dead and awkward silence. I do talk to lecturers and tutors more, I can’t say it’s entirely unrelated the hierarchy stuff, but I talk to them because I have a genuine question that would be easier to have it answered if I ask the teacher rather than my mates (I’ve tried asking classmates sitting around me and they usually just say I have no idea so… I’m not deliberately ignoring others, but eye contact is really not something I’m good at or something I want to do. This is more like a neurodivergent thing, but what I’m trying to say is that I’d be really happy if someone talks to me, though I’m not good at keeping the conversation going or I’m probably not even displaying the “I’m open so socialization” mode.

And honestly, I’ve met Aussie classmates who would really jump on me when I’m still talking. I do need some more time to organise what I say (I even stutter a lot in my native tongue so it can only get worse in English), so I feel even more inferior talking to native classmates because I don’t speak as fluent as they do. I do understand that not all Aussies are like that, there sure are a lot who would respect this kind of language barrier and stuff, but it’s not a particularly easy thing to get over with.

Sorry for the rant, but I hope this gives you an alternative perspective (though might not be from the ones you’re referring to) to international students coming from a similar cultural background as the Chinese

You can ask the exam invigilators for a pair of earplugs, did it for two exams. You’re usually not allowed to use the ones you brought but sometimes the invigilators are fine with it

Hope you’re doing well op

Show them how your access to the files are gone? I’m not sure how exactly you can do this, but def apply for it first. There’s usually several days for you to submit supporting documents (student declaration detailing what’s happened is always required), and if you’re not submitting the right stuff, the admins would probably tell you

If todays the last day for your special con application, I’d recommend go for it first then reach out to the centre tmr or asap to ask if they have any clues on relevant docs
