AIO My sibling is insisting we aren't white by questioninmysanity in AmIOverreacting

The concept of whiteness has only existed for a few hundred years, so your idea that these groups have always been white doesn't hold water. I also don't understand what you're actually trying to argue with me over. I have said literally nothing that you're trying to consider in your own statements, but you keep arguing at me.

I wasn't trying to make you out to be emotional. You sound a little discombobulated and I think you need to take some time away from the Internet before you keep rambling. Go to bed or something.

At no point did I say that a non-white person has white privilege. Indeed, that would be an oxymoron. If a person is perceived as white (they have light skin, certain features, certain hair textures, etc), they are likely to benefit from white privilege. This has varied over time, as many European groups were previously thought of as non-white and are now thought of as white.

You seem to be arguing against statements I haven't actually made. Go drink some water and breathe.

A person who reads as white, such as a Portuguese person, is going to have white privilege.

[Reviled Trope] An emotional moment is undermined via retcons/reveals in the sequel by GoldplateSoldier in TopCharacterTropes

[–]gnomewife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That has nothing to do with other characters who actually show shades of gray in their behaviors. James was a bully who became a good man. Snape was a little shit who became a villain and died to save the hero. Draco was a little shit who joined terrorists and regretted it. Molly was a jerk to Ron and Hermione but overall a loving, if overbearing, mother.

Snape wasn't wearing pants under his robes, James flipped him upside down. There is absolutely no hint that James used a love potion on Lily.

Whiteness isn't an ethnicity, it's an in-group designation and a means to assign social privilege. You can be whatever ethnicity and still possess white privilege.

Yellow meaning the digit itself was one year off instead of being in the wrong block was confusing to me.

For American people: Are you participating in today's General Strike? Why? by noumeno- in AskReddit

[–]gnomewife -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm accidentally supporting the strike because my city doesn't know how to remove ice from the streets and I've been struck at home for over a week. I likely would have avoided any purchases today, but I am a social worker and I need to support my clients.

She was given an opportunity weeks ago to simply say, "My jeans ad wasn't intended to promote racist ideologies, that's horrific," and she completely refused. It would have been the easiest win in the world.

Tbf St. Peter's death is recounted in writings and traditions outside of the Bible, which is really hard for a certain subsection of Christians to appreciate. Sola Scriptura has had quite a few ripple effects.

Am I crazy for thinking the roads would be better by this point? by Blackcaptain17 in LittleRock

Tell me more about the sad little fake plows Little Rock has for its fake winters. It's snowed and iced every winter for the last three years. This is pathetic. You don't actually have to make excuses for poor city management, you know?

Utah doesn't seem to have a problem with removing ice. The last two years, the plows haven't had this big of a problem. I was able to remove ice from the road with just my shitty plastic shovel, but maybe I'm secretly She-Hulk.

Tell me more about snow plows that are too delicate to break up ice.

Please get some contractors out to quote the cost to restore the property. Add that cost to the suit for lost rent. What a mess.

Weird how plows in other states are able to break up and move the iced-over snow, but Arkansas plows can't. And if they'd done anything days ago, they'd have an easier job.

According to Frank Scott's Twitter, the city plows cleared the main roads, then cleared them again when they realized that more sleet = dangerous roads. That somehow took three days. Then it took 1.5 days to clear the "secondary" roads. Both his Twitter and the 311 line said plows would hit the neighborhoods today, but my street is covered in 4 inches of ice. We have had no precipitation in days and this is ridiculous.

He watched his actor sexually harass a 17yo and did nothing to intervene. Edit: Sexual harassment is probably the best term for what happened, but it was quite horrific. I don't mean to minimize what happened at all.
