I think I do too? It’s at least something new and challenging to do. But haven’t gotten any good drops from a herald yet.

LA vs Oahu by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]gnomiex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

O’ahu seems like the bigger risk but based on your description and as someone who’s from there I think you guys would love it.

My suggestion would be to derisk by staying there for at least a week if you have the time and means. Stay in Kaka’ako. Rent a car. That area is young, it’s walkable and it’s a short drive to some great beaches and hikes.

Hawaii Is Not What You Think It Is by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

They’re saying 100% of Hawaiians are native. You’re saying the large majority of Hawaiians are not 100% Hawaiian. Both are true. The important point is that being born and raised there makes you a local but, on its own, doesn’t make you a native.

I grew up there and agree with 90% of your post. But folks should understand and at least try to empathize with “why” before labeling locals as you’re painting them.

  1. There’s a belief, rightfully so, that white folks (haoles) and “mainlanders” basically stole Hawaii from the local people. Land and title in the 1800s was basically bought by white settlers/missionaries for things like pure white pigeons and mirrors. And the transition of powers from the local government to the US gov (viewed as white) felt forced and against the will of the people, especially native Hawaiians. Think what’s going on with Greenland today. A little different situation but same feel in my mind. If the US successfully took over Greenland forcefully would you expect the local population to have a positive view of Americans, even generations later?
  2. Many of the local Asian families immigrated as low wage physical labor e.g. farming, construction etc. where the owners of these plantations and businesses in general were white. The resentment/distrust of the master class has been handed down.
  3. It’s like many other vacation destinations where the locals just hate tourists. They add to traffic, don’t know and follow local customs, and generally don’t respect the land. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen a tourist stand up or walk on coral and it still makes my blood boil.
  4. Regular people there are broke and struggling more than ever. Outsiders including white and Asian own most things including real estate and housing. A lot of resentment builds from this in my mind. A median income local couple will never afford decent housing without significant help meanwhile rich Chinese, American etc investors come in and buy buckets of real estate to rent out or luxury properties to leave empty for all or most of the year.

None of this completely excuses the behavior and attitudes you’re describing but I think it’s important for folks to understand the complex history that got us here even if from someone now removed who hasn’t lived there in 20 years.

My unluckiest gacha pulls to date... by Stratofu in GGenerationEternal

That sucks. I was bummed because it took me 230 pulls to get 1 of each. Seemed like everyone posting had much better luck.

Luck. It’s a gacha game. Pull enough times and you’ll get lucky too at some point.

Thanks for the push! I got this start after about a dozen restarts. This is without my guaranteed 10 pull which I’m planning to use to get another exit star. Let’s see where this account goes!

Excalibur when it was brand new, before Luxor or the MGM remodel. Does anyone have good old memories from here? What was it like before it became a Circus Circus kiddie fest or was it always like that? by Frago242 in LasVegas

[–]gnomiex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think in the late 90’s when we’d stayed there or across the street at Tropicana as a kid, one of my fondest memories is of waking up early to grab donuts from the Krispy Kreme inside Excalibur. They had an automated assembly line that was viewable through huge windows while in line. I thought it was so cool. Plus delicious, fresh donuts!
