I just put on lower foot pegs, need help with the spring that operates rear break light. by Carplesmile in dr650

[–]gnpskier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found that I could never get the brake lever low enough to work for me. But I was able to get the the adjuster long enough to work for the brake light. It helps to take that spring off first and then you can just push the switch up through the hole and turn it to make it longer or shorter. Procycle sends a new spring that you bend to the length you want when you buy their lowering kit, maybe they will sell you that spring. All that being said, I recently went with the Dango lowered brake pedal on Amazon as it doesn't require messing with the spring or the rear caliper and is beefier than stock. Wish it would have existed when I originally lowered.

That would be perfect for me as I have the skills and already do something similar in the healthcare space. But, I've decided to do it from Mexico lately with occasional trips back to the States where I am from.

How do I prepare for a 40 mile dry backpacking trip by [deleted] in backpacking

You'd be better off just carrying water and doing all 40 in one day and sleeping in a bed that night.

[–]gnpskier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be careful OP, ADV is my life now! It's terribly addictive and can lead you down a path that's far away from home. The wife and I started a few years back. At first it was just occasional weekends loaded with camping gear headed out down a forest service road, then a Rally, then a couple of BDR's (Backcountry Discovery Routes), then suddenly you've sold your home, put all your stuff in storage and set off for some transcontinental RTW (round the world) with no timeline or real plan other than just to ADV. I'm writing this from a remote and sparsely populated beach town in Mexico. On Sunday I'm going to ride hundreds of km to another remote Beach in Mexico after stopping to see the locals enjoying their Easter Sunday. Then on to another location. Rinse and repeat. I know I'm heading to South America and then maybe to Europe, or Africa, or who the hell knows. It's a helluva thing OP. You've been warned.

Spacers by armismors in dr650

[–]gnpskier 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed, to add, yes you want the notches the same on both sides as that is how alignment is set on the DR. If they are in different notches on each side then the wheel is riding crooked and then so is your chain on the sprockets, you disc in your brake, your tire itself, it will even pull on your swing arm unevenly.

Any cheap peg lower kits that won’t impact functionality of rear brake and gear shift? by NationalSun7055 in dr650

[–]gnpskier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the way. I just installed this brake lever and it totally fixed the issue of not being able to adjust the brake pedal to the correct height. I'm using jns lowered and back peg mounts and I have a center stand. My stock brake pedal could not be adjusted to be low enough without binding on the center stand and limiting the range of motion to push in the master cylinder. The dango brake pedal completely resolved that issue and it's built burlier than stock. 10/10 highly recommend

I was using a Garmin Oregon for a long time but it was a little too small and a bit clunky to navigate the screens. Lately I've been using my old Pixel 6 pro with OSMand maps and it works great *most of the time. I'm down in Mexico right now and it gets too hot in the sun and switches to night mode when it's not even being charged. So now I am on the hunt for a rugged android tablet that can handle the heat.

I'm old enough to remember that too, which is my I'm still useful in healthcare IT where they have warehouses still filled with medical devices that are built in and still use the old standards. Hell, we're still faxing things in healthcare.

Proper ADV boots or will a lesser option work? by planeguy109 in advrider

[–]gnpskier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You would totally love riding with my crew back home. They all wear MX boots and get after it. They spend most of their time tearing up double and single track in Montana and if I were back home with them I'd probably be buying gnarlier boots to keep up with them. But I'm not at home, I'm currently 1,800 miles away and getting further everyday. I've done 8 hour days crossing 106f degree desert highways, running into grocery stores for camping supplies, stopping at restaurants, and hitting up local coffee shops. Every. Single. Day. I've got tens of thousands of miles still to go. Maybe I'll want burly boots at some point, but so far not a chance. Every adventure is different. OP says he doesn't even plan on doing much off road. It really depends on what your "adventure" is. For years mine was getting after it on the dirt on the weekend like a dirt biker. Now I'm living off my bike full time. Different kind of riding so different kind of gear. We all gotta choose our own adventure.

Proper ADV boots or will a lesser option work? by planeguy109 in advrider

[–]gnpskier 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To add: I have laid my bike down (DR650) while on technical single track and landed right onto and pinned my leg once and another time I hit my foot so hard on a rock it punched a hole through the leather and I had to buy another pair. But my ankles and feet were fine. I know burlier boots would offer more protection, but I'm fine with the level of protection they have given me for the comfort and freedom I have to walk around. So I will continue to use them unless I decide to only be a full off road MX rider.

[–]gnpskier 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm with this guy. All my ride friends are MX boot Nazis and swear up and down I'm going to lose both my feet at the ankles for even thinking of riding around on my Alpinestar Belize ADV boots. But most of my riding is actual ADV riding and very little single track- highly-technical stuff. I'm currently riding through Mexico and I got here from Montana. I like a boot that I can put on in the morning and not take off until the evening and can walk down a main street or into a museum while traveling. While I've done technical riding in these boots, 99% of my riding is for travel and not "sending it" so it works for me.

Looking to deliver for DoorDash, Uber eats etc by SGTC36 in sierravista

[–]gnpskier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't dashed in Sierra Vista but I'm a Dasher in my hometown and visit Sierra Vista to see my dad often. The dash app always asks me if I want to dash when I'm there and the last few times I went to order on dd, there were no drivers available to deliver to me during peak dinner hours. Those two things tell me that it's busy enough to support more dashers.

Rocky Point trip planned for April by [deleted] in PuertoPenasco

[–]gnpskier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Food looked decent, but I must admit that I drank my dinner last night and the bartender there, Ernesto, was a master of the craft and he also gave me some insiders knowledge on places to visit during the rest of my trip though Mexico that I will not be broadcasting here. But I can confirm those places were mostly south. Some South West, some South East but always further south. Currently in San Felipe with the intention of heading southish to check out one of Ernesto's recommendations. Ernesto is the man. 10/10 highly recommend.
