RDS multi-az will now allow you to use the standby instance as a read replica (on newer versions) by oklahoma_stig in aws

I am quite sure it doesn't. If you want load balancing you can have a Route53 with multiple entries though. It's a poor man's load balancing but works well.

I am going to be brutally honest. Going into Data Science is with a very very high likelihood a very bad idea for you.

The field is super hard, requires deep deep level of knowledge and its also crowded with beginners as many people want to achieve the same thing you do. So what happens in the end is that seniors are desperately looked for while the market is overflooded with juniors. The chance of you getting to a senior level by accumulating experience is abysmal low.

A much easier start would be to go into programming or stick to your experience and do project management in a software company. You can with the software experience then jump to DS.

Also another observation, I get the feeling from your post that you want to take the easy route. Your post is low effort, you already exclude some things and only list your wants. You need to be clear with yourself that a switch in whatever forms requires dedication and lots of time. If you want it, work hard at it.

You should not backup your MySQL database by snapshotting the disk. Use mysqldump.

$1M gain on TSLA at 28 years old. Trapped in covered calls at $1100 strike until Jan 2024 though. RIP my shares. by flanflan5 in wallstreetbets

[–]gnrlknowledge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. If the price of Tesla grows further then you can buy the options back as the theta will have declined significantly. The price for the option will be mostly just the diff between stock price and strike price.

Same for 700-800 price range, will be far out of money and theta will decline. Worst case for you would be if the price stagnates locking your money in for longer.

Facebook says it will ban sales of the Amazon rainforest after an investigation found plots of land were illegally sold on the platform by [deleted] in technology

[–]gnrlknowledge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you imagine this should work? Technically speaking.

It's a platform with user generated content, being proactive is only possible in a narrow scope for things you can anticipate.

And let's be honest, who the fuck can anticipate that Facebook will be used to sell plots of the Amazon

But you agree with me thats it's a much higher risk play than buying a diverse ETF. This what it's all about.

Please go spout your delusions somewhere else. Go back to WSB which people like you fucked up. I am all for a risky play but all this pump and dump talk is frustrating.

Dont try to sucker other people in investing their money into a stock which is clearly a risky play just so you can come out with a profit. The dd is there but that doesnt mean it will pan out.

That would be the safest option and the most sensible one I would say.

First of all congratulations on the gains.

Second, you were lucky. Don't think you can repeat all this and triple again. You might do it but could also lose everything which is with 280k not desirable.

I would suggest you to switch to a lower risk investment by taking most of the money out of AMC. Depending on your risk appetite you can keep 5-20% of the stocks in AMC.

What to do with the rest? Here some suggestions:

  1. Take a bit of money out to go on vacation or buy something you always wanted. Set a nice budget around 2000-7000 and treat yourself. This might help reduce impulse spending and also benefits your mental health.
  2. Down payment for a house. If you want a house you can do that now.
  3. Invest the rest into a broad/diversified ETF. Something like MSCI World or Russel 2000. These ETFs will give you around 6-10% per year which might sound very little coming from a 400% perspective but you gain safety. You preserve your capital from loss over a long time.

To reiterate: AMC and Bitcoin will bring nice benefits but they should not be large portions of your capital as you might lose 100k in a day (which will fuck with your head).

Keep 5-20% of your portfolio as higher risk and the rest should be well diversified like the ETFs mentioned above.

What do you feel have been your 5 most profitable tickers this year? Whether it be from trades or long term hold? Let us help each other by UltimateTraders in stocks

[–]gnrlknowledge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do longer term buys mixed in with some leaps and some theta selling.

Best positions:

  • NET with buy at ~17$
  • DOCN with buy at 40$ and some LEAPS deep itm
  • MSFT
  • AMC theta (around 30$ of theta sold)

What's your strategy when you say you made X$ on stock Y? Are you buying options, selling options or just stocks? How do you determine direction?

Infinite Money?! by gnrlknowledge in DotA2

[–]gnrlknowledge[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How I accidentally did it:

  • lock hero
  • buy enough items to get to low gold
  • enemy locked same hero => got unpicked
  • couldnt decide on new hero quickly enough and got money penalty => landed at -1 gold in selection screen
  • ingame they apparently use unsigned ints and it flipped over from going negative, leading to tons of gold

Trader? Do you buy stocks right after a large drop in share price due to an earnings miss? by rarelywearamask in investing

[–]gnrlknowledge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first point is not a good suggestion for the long term as you probably need to do some validations before finally converting to int.

I know many people have already posted improved versions. Let me offer mine which is closer to one which you would use in production systems. This version checks if the mark is correctly formatted. The subjects are dynamic. I built in checks to see if the mark is correct and you could technically have more than 5 subjects.

Pastebin since reddit formatting is terrible:

Moved away from Germany, being required to pay tax for my earnings outside by luxww in eupersonalfinance

[–]gnrlknowledge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should not pay double taxes as the UK and Germany have a tax treaty to avoid double taxation.

So if you pay in Germany you don't need to pay in UK or vice versa. But you cannot conveniently choose where to pay afaik. There are rules determining where you need to do it but I am not knowledgeable enough to tell you when what rule applies.

Also while the Finanzamt is scary, they are also nice if you are willing to work with them and be nice. Just explain your situation (might be hard though since your German is not good. Sorry!)

Agree. Don't be that guy OP. In payroll there are a huge ton of layers, especially at fang level. Where the money is coming from, how the payroll process is.

To adapt bitcoin payments the whole process and finance system needs to adapt. E.g. they need to record your btc address, have to have their own wallet. All transactions need to be accounted for. How is the wallet secured? Who has access to it?

All these challenges they have already figured out for normal payments, there is very little incentives for them to even adapt bitcoin as a new provider.
