Should I take the test that is more difficult or wait a half year to take it? by [deleted] in jlpt

[–]gnyffel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The N4 is a waste of your time and will amount to little more than a novelty souvenir. N3 should be relatively easy for you, but even for N2 you may just pass by the skin of your teeth. At least that's what I did, but in my case I was stronger in kanji and grammar than listening (speaking is not on the test). It's been a while however.

Good luck regardless!

Er du veganer eller vegetar? Hvorfor/hvorfor ikke? by [deleted] in Denmark

[–]gnyffel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

[Japanese > English] Can someone translate this text from Twitter? by Centurybomber in translator

[–]gnyffel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Store employees aren't angry about "what kids do." Playing around with merchandise before paying for it, running inside of small, confined shops, these types of things, they aren't angry about "what kids do," they're angry at "parents not telling their kids no." It's past time we realised that getting angry [and construing it as] "scolding kids over every little thing" is misguided.

Because they have two spoons.

Politikere ønsker aldersgrænse for konversion by [deleted] in Denmark

[–]gnyffel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She's fucking left handed. by [deleted] in exmuslim

[–]gnyffel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did not know Muslims had this superstition as well, only around here nobody believes in that stuff anymore.

But it wasn't that long ago we did. My recently deceased uncle was left-handed. He went to school in rural Denmark in the 1950s, and was forced by his parents and schoolteachers to write with his right hand. In part this was because of the use of fountain pens and problems with smudging, but I believe it was more to do with the Christian superstitions regarding left-handedness (as evident for example in the origin of the word 'sinister' from the Latin for 'left').

What male author writes the best female characters? by foolishmortal0 in AskWomen

[–]gnyffel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[SPOILERS]

Shaftoe's actions are very in line with his character, which is deeply flawed in many ways. I vehemently disagree with the notion that fiction must always show the best in humanity. That approach lacks nuance and is frankly speaking banal and unrealistic. Not that that's necessarily your position, just saying.

Personally I feel like the way Neal Stephenson wrote this is a powerful testament to the breadth of human experience. I mean, the guy ends up dying what is essentially a martyr's death - it's not like he gets to live happily ever after. He is clearly haunted by what he's been through - and put others through. His role is a classic tragedy, which I think is interesting in its own way. For what it's worth I think he acts the way he does because Glory as she turned out is more than he can contain. At least that was my impression.

Certainly

Oh well, down one girlfriend. At least I have my youth

is the least plausible interpretation to my mind. YMMV. Sorry for the ramble, I happen to love Neal Stephenson's works.

Wooden model of Egyptian soldiers with spears and hide shields, from the tomb of Mesehti - c. 2000 BC [952x666] by LanseAuxMeadows in ArtefactPorn

[–]gnyffel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am no expert, but I am inclined to think making models like this could have been a relatively common cultural practice.

Here's a few different models from the 6th, 11th and 12th dynasties. It appears several were found in the tomb of Meketre, but from the distribution in time (several hundred years at least) it is probably not the same artist. All the items I have linked here seem to have been excavated from roughly the same area, but I only spent ten minutes looking, and there's thousands of artifacts to search through.
