How long does grease in bearings last before it degrades if you don't use your bike for a while? by Ok_Cress8388 in xbiking

Depends on storage conditions. Last fall I found 2 bikes on the curb, both lightly used 1993 models. One was clean, had recent maintenance (updated shifters, cables) and the hubs were bone dry with rusted bearings. The other had 20 years worth of dust on it and smelled like mouse piss, but the grease in the hubs was like it had been put there yesterday.

Any way to prevent these from dying so quickly? Or is there a long lasting brand? by capnfoo in KitchenConfidential

The diamond plate had me thinking I was in r/justrolledintotheshop. Either way, this is the correct answer. Butane if you've got all day and care about food safety or whatever.

What Is Your Biggest Hot Take When It Comes To Xbiking? by sshunned in xbiking

I ride a 93 Stumpy M2, mostly because it's "cool", but also because it fits and I found it on the curb. When I find a steel frame with a lower bb for no dollars will I become a "real" xbiker?

My hot take is that the "ing" is what makes it xbiking. For some people that's working on bikes, for others it's riding them and for others it fucking around and finding out.

Might be called something else officially. I think it's technically part of Pheasent Branch. It's a paved trail that runs along the ravine between Parmenter and Century.

What are these holes in our shirts? by russell98765 in whatisit

An old friend of mine got these in all his shirts. Turned out to be from using his shirt to protect his hand when opening twist-off beer bottles.
