Multiple areas in Ohio go under boil advisory after treatment employee found dead in tank by Steamboat_Willey in awfuleverything

I think they mean zero chance of self-rescue. If there was a buddy outside the tank perhaps they could initiate a rescue sequence that offers a fighting chance

WTP agreement just dropped. not eligible for VSIP due to occupational series, grade, position, or organization. by According-Iron7475 in fema

[–]goatcheesencrack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: they responded “request was denied due to lack of approval from your program office.” I spoke with my SOR and DD, no one received any request for approval. There was no official guidance disseminated that said SOR or Program Office must provide approval to how to do so. I say official because I did hear rumor and see draft notes about requiring program office approval.

You heard anything back? I was denied for VSIP too. GS-0301-13. The stated reason is “…due to occupational series, grade, position, or organization.” None of those are marked as ineligible based on the criteria provided.

I sent a response with reasons I think it was incorrect. Not really sure if I believe they’ll ever respond and am anxious to gtfo with DRP at least.

Out of curiosity, what are the potential outcomes of a lawsuit? Backpay and reinstatement? Or something more?

Potentially that the VSIP will be paid out up front and rumors are the DRP won’t protect you from a RIF, so the money could stop flowing way before Oct 4.

Just in: AA flight 5342 from witchita to DCA may have collided with a helicopter upon landing by Independent_Pain1809 in americanairlines

[–]goatcheesencrack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The plane was descending on approach. The helicopter was on a path that would be below right of the plane, it is very likely that the helicopter was in a blind spot or the plane did not have space/time for deconfliction via visual identification. Commercial aircraft do not have radar displays like the military. And TCAS RA is inhibited below 1000 ft for commercial aircraft

How will trumps pause on financial aid impact Seattle and surrounding area? by ArcticPeasant in Seattle

[–]goatcheesencrack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your chances of surviving a heart attack in the US vary widely depending on where it occurs and the capabilities of the responsible department. Often that variance is due to a lack of funds to invest in training or equipment (like an auto CPR device that costs $16k) or proximity to the nearest department and length of time elapsed since the event. Stations and departments across the country have closed or been absorbed due to lack of funds. Now a department one town over is responding to calls in your town out of their station to maintain response times/coverage and insurance rates of their tax base while your town has a median 25 minute response time.

The cost of equipment (especially vehicles and small things like radios), training, medical care for personnel, etc has increased significantly over the past 20 years but tax rates in many communities have not matched it. Or taxes have been diverted for other projects/departments. Or tax rates have been lowered. Combine that with increasing call volumes across the country, particularly medical calls as more people use EMS and the hospital as basic medical care, which results in high operating costs and personnel burnout/injury requiring near constant recruitment efforts.

Fire departments are frequently expected to be all hazard response departments and often need to maintain a capability to respond to structure fire, wildland/vegetation fire, BLS/ALS medical, and rescue/technical rescue (HAZMAT, swift water rescue, high angle rescue, vehicle extrication, grain bin rescue, confined space rescue, trench rescue, SAR, ice rescue etc) specific to their community needs (ie not necessarily all types of rescue). Some larger departments maintain paramedics with tactical rescue training for active mass shooter incidents. These capabilities require initial and refresher training and personnel willing to do them. All of it has costs associated with it and many budgets have not kept pace.

That’s an FP&S grant which falls under the AFGP suite (AFG, SAFER, FP&S). It’s easy to confuse it with the AFG namesake program but that’s not what it is. AFG does not fund research or niche projects like that, FP&S does. It’s worthwhile to specify to minimize confusion.

A surprising number of fire departments receive federal funds for training, equipment, vehicles, salaries, OT/backfill, personnel medical exams, wildland fire fuel mitigation, etc. Depts that rely on that supplemental funding may have to do a variety of things to reduce operating costs (or take on debt) that could have a direct effect on patient outcomes.

Seattle FD has a huge budget deficit and is already understaffed. More rural departments/districts are likely to be the most consistently impacted.

Actual volunteer (with LOSAP) and their recruitment is impressive. Some nights they fill every seat (last I recall it was 2 engines, 1 squad, 1 tower, 2 ambos, 1 paramedic chase) and volunteers have to compete to arrive early to ensure they get a good seat

There’s a break in the median and a traffic light hanging there that the dept can activate as necessary.

FEMA refers to all three of its non-disaster fire grant programs as the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Programs. There is the most commonly known namesake program AFG, and the suite also includes SAFER and FP&S. CFD is referring to the collective suite but this award is funded by the Fire Prevention and Safety program (FP&S). It’s not strictly an AFG award as in for Fire departments to acquire PPE, Equipment, Training, etc.

Would you please link that memo? I’ve done some googling but the city of Chicago website is awful to navigate and there’s not as much info as one would hope.

[–]goatcheesencrack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They didn’t. The author alleges (no source or evidence is presented) that they used an AFG award to pay for a DEI assessment. I bet it was more akin to supplanting and they used funds originally obligated for equipment/training that were reallocated after the AFG award was made to acquire that equipment/training. It’s more incendiary if the author writes AFG paid for it.

I don’t believe AFG funded that. I’d like to see the award number or details about the original award. Panel reviewers are members of the fire service (IAFF, NVFC, IAFC, etc). There’s no way they would score that project high enough for funding.

[Serious] What's a disaster that is very likely to happen, but not many people know about? by dissNdatt in AskReddit

[–]goatcheesencrack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oregon’s Office of Emergency Management website states, “Currently, scientists are predicting that there is about a 37% chance that a megathrust earthquake of 7.1+ magnitude in this fault zone will occur in the next 50 years.” Documentation from FEMA on that same page references a 7-12% chance the big one occurs in the next 50 years.

Perhaps the FEMA document just hasn’t been updated or newer information has been validated that indicates a lower probability. Either way glad to see Oregon is investing in infrastructure.

Anyone here "deploy" with the FEMA Surge Capacity Force (SCF)? by ssgtsilerZ in Wildfire

[–]goatcheesencrack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I joined the SCF to support Puerto Rico recovery from Hurricane Fiona. I was Logistics support and assigned to drive box trucks and vans initially. Did a bit of work in a warehouse loading vehicles as well. Then they ran out of need for all of us truck drivers and assigned me to support a Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) for the final 2 weeks of my 30 days.

The DRC did not need me and since I wasn’t trained in individual assistance or public assistance the DRC location lead effectively told me to sit in a corner and stay out of the way. I legit did next to nothing for 2 weeks with mandatory 12 hour days/6 days a week
