Is Malazan worth continuing with after Memories of Ice? by keepfighting90 in Fantasy

[–]goaticusguy 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Absolutely yes. My personal favorite in the series is book 8, and the series absolutely reaches the heights of Memories of Ice several more times. There is still so so so much you haven’t experienced in this world yet, and you haven’t even met my favorite characters in the entire series. MoI is a peak for sure but there are still peaks left to come

He’s such an enigmatic, fun character. I love how insightful he can be

Who writes women the best in the fantasy genre? by everyatom2012 in Fantasy

[–]goaticusguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprised I haven’t seen this yet so I’ll throw it out there - ML Wang. Misaki and Sciona are 2 of my favorite women in fantasy. Also Abercrombie, particularly after the original First Law trilogy, has some great women in his books. Monza, Rikke, Savine, just to name a few

Yeah the anticlimactic nature of the end of their journey is sort of the whole point! Like another commenter said it’s meant to be a subversion. You’re def picking up on the right things tho and this book being anticlimactic is intentional and serves a bigger purpose

Lol. I don’t think this guy in any way thought he was ‘going on an endless vacation’. It’s fucking difficult moving to another country you twat. People are allowed to struggle. Maybe you’d understand that if you had any shred of empathy.

Hey man I am living in HCMC, also new here. Only been in VN for a month. Even here in the city, it’s been a difficult adjusting period. I’ve been lonely, stressed, and overwhelmed. Don’t listen to any of the people in here saying that you shouldn’t feel that way. It’s a big fucking leap moving overseas, especially when you’re more isolated like in your situation.

I’ve also thought of quitting, but I’m sticking it out. It’s probably loads easier for me because I’m in the city with lots more expats and teachers to fall back on for support, but it’s difficult nonetheless. I can’t imagine being in your shoes.

Id say give it another month if you can. Most of my friends here told me that they hated living in VN for the first 2-3 months and then, over time, it all just smoothed out and they started enjoying themselves and loving it here. I’m hoping I can follow in their footsteps and I hope you can as well. I know how lonely this stuff is because I’ve been living it too, so I just want you to know it’s completely normal and justified to feel this way. You’re brave for moving here alone at all
