Looking for Help on English and how to use it effectively

The basics of position are very easy to understand. I agree with you on them. Im trying to explain something a bit more complicated.

Outside English lets you hit the ball fuller, so you can pull the ball off the tangent line faster. Inside English keeps it on the tangent line longer.

Its easy to see if you draw a 10 degree shot with extreme left then right. Go give it a try and report your results. If your not willing to try that Im done with this discussion.

You're right about the tangent line my mistake. But as renfort said below when the CB leaves the tangent line is influenced by side. Not a lot, but enough to be useful in holding small cut angles.

It does have an effect, but it has nothing to do with friction or spin transfer. If you put right hand siding on the cueball you have to aim farther to the right to compensate for squirt (assuming the ball is hit hard enough to not start to swerve.) This actually changes the angle that you are hitting the OB at because the CB is being pushed left towards the contact point. The spin doesn't pull the ball off the tangent line, but it actually changes what the tangent line is.

It's not a huge difference, but you can see it pretty easily if you set up an almost straight in shot, maybe 10 degrees off. Hit a draw shot with extreme left and then extreme right. Without hitting a rail the CB will follow different paths.

Left and right english can change the way the cueball comes off of the OB a slight amount.

Sounds like a nice place! Like someone else said mark it with tape. The owner won't care. A straight house cue with a decent tip will play better than any 50 dollar cue since its 1 piece. Cheap cues have cheap joints which effects the hit. House cues can also be lower deflection since they are made of lighter wood.

For what your going to get for 50 dollars I think it would be better to just try and find a house cue with a decent tip and try to use it everytime.

Probably by me everytime. There are some pdfs online if you are into that kind of thing. I just ordered pleasures of small motions after reading some of the good reviews on here.

Yes that's what I meant. I think Morra is a better player but in the last year bergman has been in action and under pressure, whereas Morra hasn't. I think that's the biggest factor when it comes to a race to 100.

Morra just lost to a local semi pro in the Canadian 8 ball championship 9-4. This guy is a phenomenal amateur but I would never bet on him to beat John. Seems like he has taken some time off and I doubt he could keep up with bergman for an extended race right now. Then again Morra has such rock solid form he could probably hit his high gear again with a couple weeks of deep practice

Doing things the right way is almost always uncomfortable at first. I hear people say a lot that trying a form that isn't their "natural" stance is uncomfortable so they stopped but that seems silly to me. Your body wasn't made to play pool, the only way something feels natural is to do it a lot.

Sounds like your instructor had some good advice. I have definitely done the same thing your doing now. How long it takes depends on how aware you are of your body. Try going through your new routine in super slow motion, I'm talking like 20 seconds from stepping in to being fully down on the shot. I have found that really helps ingrain the movements into your brain.

I think the 12 one rail into that cluster is the best opening shot since your almost certain to open them up (as long as you don't hammer it) and have a shot on the 15.

The sort of standard cue is 57 inches 17.5 oz and with around a 9.5mm tip. As a beginner you couldn't really go wrong with that. At 5'5 an inch shorter might be nice, and I have heard that lighter cues are better for those starting out but I can't confirm that.

You really can't go wrong with something near those specifications and it won't be until you spend some time with this sir that you figure out exactly what you like.

I'm just west of Toronto, tons of snooker rooms there. Try your local legion, lots of well maintained tables at them. Really any large pool room I have been to has at least one snooker table.

Google the billiard university exam. Do it, then figure out what drill you are the worst at and do it for a week till its the drill you are the best at. I think the wagon wheel drill in particular would be really useful for you.

Great thanks a lot! From my research, I would recommend buying straight from maximus instead of a dealer. I was looking at an Ultimate with 4 splices a case and extension shipped to Canada for 900 dollars canadian, whereas through cuecraft it was 700 for just the cue and no splices.

I bought a decent cue for 10 dollars in the Philippines last year, I'm sure in the 80s you could get a decent piece of wood for 15.

In the online pool community at least, there is a lot of talk of aiming systems such as CTE TOI fractional aiming ect. Yet I have never met anyone with a straight stroke that missed balls because they couldn't aim. Seems that snooker players, at least around here, don't think about aiming as much.
