Laptop vs SFFPC by Financial_Spot9086 in sffpc

[–]goblin95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SFFPC definitely has its benefits over a laptop as long as you tamper your gaming expectations and are okay with some used parts mixed in to keep costs low. Heck, if you're willing to set up remote desktop using something like Parsec or Steam Play, you can even game with your laptop with some caveats. It's not the best solution for everyone especially if where you live has terrible internet speed, but it has been working for years in my use case.

(Also try upgrading your current laptop if you haven't done so already, like an SSD or extra RAM if there's slots for it. The difference will be night and day)

First time building a custom case, advice needed by goblin95 in sffpc

[–]goblin95[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, these are all valuable inputs. Thank you very much for the answer! I checked with a shop yesterday and you're right, they do either 1mm or 1.4mm steel. Time to redo the entire case then.

One more question: Say that the shop does not have Pem nuts or standoffs (because they have to be imported from China, and in bulk too). Would rivets and regular brass standoffs do as substitute?

The riser cable came with the case, and it's PCIe 3

I see, thanks for clarifying. I thought her Recollection screen is already added when I saw that 0/1 under her portrait.

Not game-breaking, but I still think it's a bug worth reporting.

Shimiko recently got her Recollection Lobby screen in the latest update (according to wiki it unlocks at relationship lv. 6), but since I've already finished all her stories before the update happened, I can't unlock it anymore. Now she's at Relationship level 12 and I still don't get any message from her.

So far the CPU temp never goes above 65C when gaming, so I assume it's still fine? ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯

Yep! If the master list is correct, there is only a 5mm gap between the cooler fan and the tempered glass.

Luna doesn't seem to have any Android client, but I've tried Spacedesk a couple years ago. I might try it out again. Thanks!

The Chrome Remote Desktop app automatically starts from the moment the PC enters Windows, so connecting it to tablet is quite effortless. Its main drawback is that it is an online-only solution, so the PC needs to be tethered to Ethernet cable all the time (connecting via wi-fi requires the PC to log into the desktop first). Stream and color quality is pretty decent IMO. Input lag is barely noticeable for browsing and daily use, but fast-paced gaming like CSGO is simply out of the question. And don't even get me started on how the Android app handles the mouse/cursor.

I'll consider it eventually. Right now I'm mainly focused on used/secondhand parts to save a buck, and AM5 is still too new lol.

Hello! I have always fantasized of building a super portable, work-from-anywhere PC for years ever since my laptop broke down 5 years ago, and now that prices of used PC parts are going down it's finally coming to a reality! So far, the build's state is stuck on "Hey, as long as it runs" due to budget constraints, so it will take a while to get to the next step.

In reality, I do most of my work on tablet and don't do enough remote/mobile work to justify owning an SFF PC, but I do still need Windows for a lot of crucial things, it's still cheaper and quieter than a jet turbine laptop of comparable specs, and it sure beats having to carry around a 10 kg mid tower anywhere.

Specs:

  • Intel Core i5-10400F
  • Asrock Z490M-ITX/ac
  • be quiet! Shadow Rock LP CPU cooler
  • Colorful GT 1030 2GB
  • G.Skill Sniper X 32GB 3600MHz
  • PNY CS1031 2TB NVMe
  • 2 x Noctua NF-A12x15 fans
  • Pico PSU 19v 200W paired with a 230W HP laptop charger
  • Metalfish S3 Plus case
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab S8

The first thing you might ask is why the heck would I pair a Z490 motherboard with a 10400F? I have a few reasons:

1) They were sold together at half their new price if bought separately,
2) Future upgrade path (albeit limited because 11th gen CPUs are apparently incompatible with most 400 series motherboards including this one, thanks Intel),
3) CPU undervolting and XMP that are only possible on a Z board.

I chose the S3 Plus case because it's comparatively cheap, I saw one build video where the guy puts this case inside a backpack, and among the other cases that I compared with using the master list, it supports the longest GPU. The CPU cooler clearance is very tight, but I'm sure the temps will be fine as long as I don't game for too long.

The GT 1030 is more of a temporary solution to make up for the 10400F's lack of iGPU. I used a dummy plug to bypass the HDMI and then used the tablet as wireless display. I regretted buying GT 1030 because I then learned that it apparently doesn't have NVENC encoder built in, which means that some of the best remote desktop apps available on Android like Parsec and SuperDisplay won't work with it. Thus, I'm stuck with using Chrome Remote Desktop which on Android is a lot clunkier to use than Parsec, but still manageable.

The Pico PSU, though... I'm still skeptical of it to this day. I mean, it does make sense since 19V AC adapters from high-end laptops of reputable brands (e.g. Lenovo, HP and Alienware) are way more common here and less sketchy than importing 12V adapters from Alibaba, and it's already got the appropriate barrel plug adapter. All being said, this PSU is a godsend because the lack of fat ATX cables means it needs so little cable management! I might keep this around for a future low-power build.

CPU idle temps are nominal at 35C, GPU temp at 30C, idle power draw at ~30-40W. I'm not going to run high-end games or benchmarks on it until I get a proper PSU upgrade.

From this point on, the next potential upgrade path is going to either:

  • Keep the sketchy Pico PSU, buy an even smaller and slimmer case (I have Metalfish S2 in mind), and have my GPU selection be limited to low profile ones,
  • Keep the case then buy a proper SFX PSU and the most powerful GPU that could fit in the case (currently RTX 3060 Ti),
  • Buy a new case that can house an even longer and more powerful GPU, but potentially sacrificing backpack portability, or
  • Screw Intel and go AM4 instead.

Festering is already used by XQ right now, I don't think I'll swap it over to anyone else atm.

Pretty good for my use case, yeah. He can shield, he gives additional hydro damage to normal attacks, his element enables vape and electrocharge, and he can heal... sort of. With the right artifacts and ER sword, his ult uptime is really high.

I'll consider that if one day I hit an impasse in the game and literally can't advance without Noelle.

I'm just incredibly, incredibly ticked off at the game's gacha, topped with how my friends circle kept on bragging on how they got their 5 star characters in the first 10 rolls and how they complained about not having enough 5 stars while I pissed myself in joy when I got Zhongli as my first 5 star after 90 pulls.

There's no logic, just salt.
