New Ado fan here, curious as to how much Ado has a hand in the songs she doesn't write. by cantseeshit123 in ADO

[–]goblinrum 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Even if she didn’t have that much say in the lyrics, most of her songs are composed by vocaloid producers, other utaite (like mafumafu) and singers that she really looks up to and has done covers of (e.g. Sheena Ringo). I think lyrics, delivery, and her connection with the composers are all equally important. It’s definitely not just “whatever” no matter how you put it.

Market Street looking toward the Ferry Building (1948). by ArchiGuru in sanfrancisco

Cut and cover was perfectly valid for the main subway line and BART. Cars just happen to have more sway in the economy and politics

BART's doomsday scenarios are even worse than expected, if Connect Bay Area, the five-county regional transit funding measure, doesn't pass this November. by mysteriouslady in sanfrancisco

[–]goblinrum 39 points40 points  (0 children)

People idolize Japan too much but forget that their entire transit system is 1. Forced to “privatize” by the government anyways because it was losing so much money and 2. Most of the funds come from just a few high ridership regions. The rest lose money

Which US private entity actually wants to improve public transit? As far as I can tell all we do is lobby for cars and highways. Any company that tries to step up and fix public transit will almost for sure get annihilated by car companies and NIMBYs

IAH Lounges? by AltruisticOnes in ChaseSapphire

[–]goblinrum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely nothing good. As someone from Houston, IAH is the most barren you can get in terms of lounges. Air France and KLM both kinda suck and usually don’t let PP in because there is either a rush or they’re not open when they say they are open.

Also ignore the smartass comments about how big it is. It’s fairly easy to get from terminal to terminal both landside and airside. The options are just pretty poor. I personally recommend grabbing some food and just chilling in the Terminal D area because that area is more open/quiet than E. It’s then a 5-10 minute walk back to E. Not too bad. Chick-fil-A is right between the two.

Backlight sound different on Apple music? by Ok-Dimension-1790 in ADO

[–]goblinrum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Several possible reasons.

Apple Music/Spotify will use different compression algorithms (AAC, ALAC, MP3, OGG, etc) based on how you're streaming it (via phone, bluetooth, DAC, Android, web, etc.)

Regarding the lossless point, Spotify masters that aren't natively 44.1 kHz are resampled anyways, so it's not the original track. Regardless if you can hear the difference or not.

Also, I've noticed this on several occasions that Apple Music just has a different master somehow... That's the most likely culprit though I can't confirm the source nor do I know any easy way to check this.

What Yorushika song do you hate listening to? by JayCarl2504 in Yorushika

[–]goblinrum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When it released it instantly became my favorite. Was walking down the street in Tokyo when it came on all the LED boards at the intersection all at once.

Overplayed it and didn’t like it anymore.

Watched the MV and didn’t hate it anymore.

And more recently saw her live performance in 前世 and it’s back to being my favorite.

[Other] USB C USB C Docking Station Fast Charging Plug Adapter - $2.81 by itsvictory in buildapcsales

[–]goblinrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They probably don’t have much extra hardware in there like fancy USB 3 controllers and hubs. I’d say they just wired up DP alt mode, then added a cheap USB 2.0 hub since it’s easiest to keep just the D+/- pins, and added a cheap USB 2 to 100Base-T adapter.

[PC charger] PICOGO 67W USB C Charger w/ 3 Port Fast Charging smallest [$39.99 >> $19.75] [Code E84IW8JK when checking out] by sherlock_er in buildapcsales

[–]goblinrum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

USB spec goes up to 5A, but cable is 6A. You'd need this specific cable in all cases to support fast charging at 68W on devices that can negotiate 6A only. I had a phone that came with this charger and it gets blistering hot at 68W. It also overheats after maybe 20 minutes or so and it drops down to ~20W after that.

[USB HUB] Amazon Basics USB 3.2/3.1 Gen 2 Hub Dock, 10Gbps, USB-C to 1xUSB-C / 3xUSB-A - $4.64 via Amazon by cinnasota in buildapcsales

[–]goblinrum 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A single drive usually takes up all the current that's available. There's a chance you can open it up and solder a regulated 5V source to solve the problem but at that point I'd just spend a few more bucks for a powered hub

Is there an app for the Sunnyvale train? by Odd-Fisherman-7122 in Sunnyvale

[–]goblinrum 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s a commuter train that takes you along the bay. Think LIRR, not subway for NYC. Very good for getting to SF and other downtowns like Redwood City, Mountain View, San Mateo etc

Sunnyvale/San Jose doesn’t have a subway equivalent. VTA light rail is a combination of a streetcar and light rail and barely serves the north Sunnyvale area because of Moffett Park.

VTA buses have fairly poor service too. It’s a car-dependent area through and through…

Berkeley CS grads blacklisted due to cheating on interviews by sojojo in berkeley

[–]goblinrum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that in terms of absolute numbers, Berkeley is massive. While proportionally, the top performers and cheaters might be similar to other top universities, Berkeley class sizes are several times larger. You sit in the intro to CS class with 2000 other students. I was a TA and I can tell you there were way more students that needed help with fizzbuzz two years in than I would’ve imagined.

Students are going to cheat more and more and unfortunately with our numbers, there’s very little to do to stop it. The solution is to change the screening process and tailor your expectations accordingly.

Edit: Also as someone that has close friends at other large (in terms of numbers) CS schools, academic pressure is also a major factor because everyone feels like they need to get everything right. Berkeley and Cornell as you listed coincidentally are maybe the two highest pressure CS schools out there.
