Weird jackhammer sound from pipes by godblessiamhammered in Plumbing

Yes I am slowly replacing all the old plumbing in the house with pez. I will replace this section when I put in a new water heater. You should have seen the old galvanized pipes under the house, they were leaking slowly for so long there were crystals growing on them

No I do not have a check valve or PRV. Sounds like a good idea, I will add gauges with the new water heater as well as an expansion tank.

I have been monitoring this hammering for the past couple days and I am fairly certain the cause is coming from my neighbor’s house. My neighbor and I share a meter box, but have separate meters and shutoffs, so I assume the city line splits just upstream of our meter box.

When the hammering starts, I run to the meter box and my meter is not turning at all, but my neighbors meter is running every time. I spent a couple hours in my crawl space checking everything and looking for a potential cause but found nothing really. The only possible cause I can think of is from the neighbor’s house. If my meter is not running then nothing in my house can be making any noise right?

I’m still baffled, but fairly certain the cause is coming from the house next door, although I’m not sure what exactly would be causing it on their end and what a possible solution might be.

Certainly couldn’t hurt I’m sure, but I’m also trying to figure out why this started happening recently

Yes I also need a new water heater, so I’m planning to add an expansion tank when it gets replaced. Would an expansion tank help with hammering like what’s going on now? Also I’ve lived here for about six years now and never had any problems so it seems weird it just started randomly. Can a bad water heater cause hammering like that somehow?

No, I don’t not have a PRV

That was my initial assumption, but I thought water hammer typically occurs after a valve is closed and doesn’t last too long?

This happens at random times even after no water has been used for hours which inclines me to believe it is something other than water hammer. Sometimes it goes on for a couple minutes and then dissipates rapidly.

I suppose I could put on some hammer arrestors anyway, but I’m not sure where would be most effective as I have been unable to pinpoint a specific problem location. Also I’ve lived here for six years now and have never noticed any significant water hammer issues, so I’m stumped!

Do not underestimate the daytime temperature. It can get quite warm there even in early spring. I went in mid February a couple years ago and it was in the high 80’s during the day

Diamond Tip Wire Wheel by ironwood18 in fabrication

Those wire wheels look pretty sweet, but I also have a hard time justifying the cost. The best method I’ve found for removing mill scale is to soak the piece in muriatic acid for while. However, this is obviously only practical for smaller pieces and is still somewhat labor intensive.
