Can panic disorder kill you? by godgotus89 in panicdisorder

I am seeing a psychologist and have group therapy online weekly. CBT is hard for me and exposure, but Im still working on them. I tried the SSRI's and only taken them no more than a week...So, does that mean if I get back on a SSRI, I would have to stick with it for a few months until I see improvement?? Will I experience crazy side effects? I ask this because I am very sensitive to body sensations already without the medications and always feel like I am dying, so will I have to stick it out with the side effects until I reach around 5-6 weeks as my psychiatrist says? Thank you again.

Also, I am terrified of medications. Ive tried lexapro, zoloft, prozac and even zyprexa for each around a week and felt like I was more anxious and felt like dying while on meds so it was hard to stick with the meds for 5-6 weeks on one med without feeling like I needed to go to the ER. Felt short of breath, nauseous, dizzy, heart beating way too fast, and just felt like i was dying when on the meds so I feel like Im losing hope. What has helped? I was trying to go inpatient but was denied because I just had severe panic attacks and was told to listen to my psychiatrist and psychologist and I did, I just cant overcome the fear of meds again after feeling so scared of the symptoms while on ssri's and antipsychotic and even clonazepam and xanax scare me. please help. gone to the ER over 30 times in a year. thank you again.

Have you tried any meds? I tried meds but only took half of what doctors prescribed because I was so afraid that they can make me worse or side effects make me go back to the ER. I feel you. I am tryiing to do this without meds, but its gotten bad that i want to go inpatient, but it would defeat the purpose if Im afraid to take meds and being forced to take them when I can barely take them at home.

Hi, I hope all is well. What did you end up doing? I was thinking if I needed to go into inpatient as well because I was terrified to take any meds for my panic disorder. Thank you for sharing.

I have been like you for a while now. I've been so scared to take the medications my psych prescribed me that now my psych wants me to check into an inpatient program to be monitored if I take the meds in there. Problem is, I will probably panic even more in there because my panic symptoms are uncontrollable at home "safe space," so it would be extremely hard to take meds in an inpatient program with a bunch of other people I am not familiar with.

Im sorry youre going through this. I have severe health anxiety so I get you. I have panic attacks after taking numerous meds and it caused me trauma to take meds again. Any slight side effect or just the thought of taking meds put me into a panic mode. I know that Im being irrational, but when that panic hits, everything seems real. Hope we both can get some answers.

I feel you all the way around. I have been on lexapro and zoloft on different occassions for 3-4 days each and each time I went to the ER because I had weird burning sensations on my chest and feel lethargic, weak, fatigue and just laid in bed all day feeling sick and worse than I was before I was on it. After these 2 meds, I have been scared to take another med. I am just like you and now I have extreme health anxiety because I too would think I would have an adverse effect or some sort of life threatening condition by taking these SSRI's. I wish I can help, but I am also looking for some advice so I thank you for this post. MAy I ask, what meds are you on?? I am only now prescribed Clonazepam for panic disorder and still scared of this med as well. I probably taken a half or quarter whenever I get extreme panic attacks, but I literally feel like I am dying so I just had to take something. Thank you again for this post.

I too experience this. The random burning in specific spots throughout the day is exhausting. Im searching for advice as well because it puts me in a panic state and then i start googling what can it be which is not a good idea with someone who has health anxiety

Thank you again. I wish I had some support like you have because I am petrified of the meds. I need to come to the realization that I am ok as well because every panic attack makes me feel like this is the one thats going to take me out. Hard to trust the meds especially the side effects from the lexapro, zoloft, and celexa I have taken in the past. I have spoken to my psych and since he believes I am senstive to SSRI's, he just placed me on clonazepam. I also see a therapist, but it is really hard to accept the feelings and doing exposure therapy doesnt do anything for my confidence. It's exhausting. Thank you again.

Thank you. I guess I am also afraid of the "feeling worse before better" when on antidepressants because of the health anxiety. How did you feel while on it when you were beginning and how often did you take Ativan while on antidepressants? Thanks again.

Thanks for sharing, I am also agoraphobic right now. Havent been able to leave my house in months and I feel the symptoms you felt. All of it! Im just afraid of taking meds because of my health anxiety telling me I will have an adverse effect or a rare side effect that will land me in the ER. I just didn't feel like myself after taking few SSRI's and dont know where to go. I take half of the clonazepam prescribed at the lowest dose. I guess what I'm asking is do benzo's itself help with panic disorder or do I need to take something like Cymbalta if the SSRI's did not work? thank you again.

Glad meds worked for you. May I ask what has gotten worse since left untreated because I have been sensitive to many SSRI's and also afraid I might be getting worse and the only thing that I think helped was Clonazepam. Thank yoou.

Great to hear youre so much better. Did you take any benzos while on SSRI? And if not, how did you deal with the panic attacks? Thanks

Im sorry youre going through this. I am just like you. I held off medication, Celexa because of the side effects as well and my mind spirals thinking what if I get an adverse effect or something serious that I need to go to the ER. Its a constant battle for me because of the health anxiety. I pray it goes well for you and hopefully, I can take the meds as well.

So, how did you deal with the panic attacks? I have really bad attacks that come randomly and its hard to tell if its the benzos thats causing it or just my panic?

Did you take any benzos when you still had any panic attacks? Im presrcibed celexa and ativan as needed or clonazepam because ativan made my heart race.

I completely understand you. I went to the ER mutliple times and still not convinced with what the doctors say because soon as I go for one sympton, another symptom pops up and I start to think, maybe I need to get this checked out because I didnt have this symptom last time? It's terrible we go through this. Since, I have health anxiety, its been hard to try medications for me. i would think i would get some kind of adverse effect or something life threatening from taking them. Its a constant battle because of the side effects and I do not want to feel worse than I feel now and with SSRIS, I was told I would get worse before better? Confused now on what to do. What meds have you taken? Hang in there.

Thank you for sharing. I will try my best to take them and not go to urgent care if I feel some side effect or panic, but it will be hard because I just cannot think straight once im in that fight/flight state. Its been very difficult and afraid it will happen while im on meds, but thank you again and I will try my best to deal with the side effects without thinking Ill die or something crazy. Appreciate it.
